Access Files And The Printer Which Is Connected To The Xp Machine On Vista
Oct 22, 2007
I have a laptop running Vista, my desktop is running XP, i want to be able to access files and the printer which is connected to the Xp machine on my vista laptop, but they cannot see each other. I have the file and printer sharing stuff turned on on the laptop. Also I am running AVG on both systems and I have the Windows firewall enabled on both. Both are connected to a D-link router, DESktop is wired, laptop is wireless. Also a friend of mine came over and has the same laptop as me except he is running XP on his and he had no problem seeing my desktop, or accessing its files.

I can share a drive, no problem. No one can actually touch any of the data on that drive unless I specifically share each item one by one. Is there a way to share a drive and automatically have EVERYTHING on that drive be accessible to network users?

I have 2 XP machines and 1 Vista machine. The Vista machine can access the XP machines (using a variety of methods), but the XP machines cannot access the Vista machine (in any way/shape/form). That includes "ping", file sharing, an HTTP server, anything. All computers are in the same workgroup and subnet.

When I browse for a printer on the network I can see the workgroup, I can see the PC with the printer, but I don't see the printer show up under the PC in the Add Printer Wizard dialog. This was easy for me back when there were two machines running XP.
I have installed the x86 printer driver on the Vista machine. Would this be easier if I upgraded the Vista machine to Windows 7?

I'd need to access hard drives on an old Win98se machine thru my newly aquired Vista machine. All I have at present are the two machines. I was thinking of using two cards with a crossover cable but thought it better to just ask. What recommended additions would you suggest and is this possible at all ... particularly without having to disable the vista firewall.

I have a Canon LBP 1120 printer connected to a Windows XP PC and a Vista Laptop. I used to be able to print from both computers..... suddenly the printer started rejecting orders to print from the Vista Lapton. It sends to the Canon printer menu but it disappears after a few seconds. I've reinstalled the driver but no joy. Find it strange that it used to print from the Laptop but suddenly stopped yet still prints from the Windows PC. don't wish to pay the ??99.00 Dell wants to charge to trouble shoot the problem!

I have a new Vista 64-bit computer. Connected to the Vista computer is an HP F4820 Desk Jet printer. My Vista computer connects to the internet via a wireless connection. In another room in the house, we have an XP computer. It, too, connects
to the internet and home network via the wireless connection. When I got the Vista 'puter and the new printer, and hooked them up, the XP computer was able to print. It took some hoop-and-fire jumping to get it to do so, but it did.
My DVD/CD burner died and I had to kill my computer at the instruction of Dell (grrr), which created more problems than it was worth given that I already knew it was a harddrive problem. BUT, anyway, now my XP cannot print........

I?m trying to install a network printer on a Vista machine. Vista is able to locate the printer on the network but when I select it for installation, for some time, Vista tries to connect and then pops up this message: "Failed Connecting to Printer - Access Denied" And then another window pops up with this message: "Spooler Subsystem Application stopped woring and has been closed." In fact the spooler service always stops, so I have to restart it on the services windows, within Administrative Tools of the Control Panel. The machine is new and has been installed yesterday. Everything else works fine. The printer I am trying to install is on a Windows XP Professional machine within the same network (naturally).

i am trying to make a wireless connection from my sony vaio laptop, running vista business, to a printer (canon pixma ip4300) connected via usb to the print server of my wireless router (siemens gigaset SE551). i installed the printer as a 'local' printer on a tcp/ip address, as per the router manual - admittedly, the manual instructions were for winxp.
the problem: the printer comes up in vista as 'offline', cannot be changed to online, and won't print. documents appear in the print queue but do not print out - only sometimes when i restart the computer, the printer prints out a page or two of whatever the last failed job was. the same wireless setup with my old sony xp pro laptop works perfectly, and the printer works when connected to the vista laptop directly via usb cable, so the problem must be vista... i've turned off win defender and win firewall to no avail.
should i install the printer as a network printer? i have tried this but windows couldn't see the printer - it could see the router, but not the printer connected to it. but i've never setup a networked printer before so maybe there is something simple i'm missing.

At the risk of sounding ignorant once more, can anybody tell me where/how I can access cookie files in VISTA. Got "show all hidden files" enabled" and in Search I checked "show all hidden....."; am logged in as administrator and still can't find cookie folders. Am on IE7 now but had Firefox for a while and suspect there are a few cookies left from Firefox I want delete manually; I know I can dump 'em all but I don't want to do that.

I am able to map a Vista 64 drive from my XP machine but I get a cryptic message: Access Denied when trying to display the Vista files. I am able to go the other way - open the XP folders/files in Vista. Google searchs provide much info but I'm just not able to access the Vista folders or files from my XP machine after trying many things.

Its been about three months since I've given up trying to network my Vista machine with my XP machine, but I thought I would try it again. here are my symptoms again:
*Vista (Ultimate) machine cannot see XP (Home SP2) machine.
*XP machine can see and access the Vista machine.
*Xp machine shows up in the Vista Network Map, but not the Network Folder.
*Both machines can ping each other.
*I can access the XP machine via IP address, I can access the shared folder but not a shared printer.
*IPConfig for Vista shows that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled even though it is enabled in the Network Adaptor Properties dialog. (NetBIOS over TCP/IP always enabled, the middle radio button)
Other information:
*Everything worked as it should once apon a time, then it all went to Hell. It could have been an update, tweaking software, or antivirus setting, but I notcie too late to do anything about it.
*I know it can't be that I don't have the same User/Password on both machines (I tried it anyway but it still didn't work), because it worked awhile back without having the same accounts on both machines.
*I had Bitdefender 2008 on the Vista machine, the Firewall log had entries that the ports 138 and 139 were being refused, despite having the XP machine being on the trusted list (by its IP address). So I uninstalled the Antivirus, but the problem persists.
*The XP machine has Zone Alarm Internet Security.................

I've got a friends laptop to repair. I've determined that at least the boot files are damaged. I've connected the hard drive to my own PC in an attempt to recover the files from the drive. Unfortunately, my PC says that access is denied when I try to browse the drive. In the disk manager I can see the drive. I've gone onto the drive and updated the permissions on all the files to allow full access for administrators and users, yet I still cannot access the drive. I know that the content of the drive is still there because I COULD see the filenames zipping on the screen while the system was updating permissions. (That shouldn't work if I don't have permission, should it?) If I boot from an installation CD and try to access the drive from a recovery console it asks for the password for that Windows installation. I enter the only password that is on the laptop, but it does not work. There is only one user on the laptop, so that SHOULD be the password.

I upgraded my Vista Home Premium x64 to SP2 on 8/28. No problem until 8/31. Now I cannot get on the internet regardless of firefox, IE, or Chrome. The Windows Network Diagnostics did not find any problems. The network and Sharing center shows that I am connected to my network and then to the internet with no issues. IPv4 = Internet. IPv6 = limited.
Steps completed thus far:I rebooted the cable modem and the router (linksys wrt54g) I successfully pinged the x64 computer with a different cpu on the network. Status activity shows bytes sent and received successfully on the x64 system. I tried to system restore prior to SP2 upgrade but says failed, however System properties show that running SP1. I updated network card driver (intel 82567lf-2) to most recent - 7/23 I ran the Intel network card diagnostics and all test were sucessful Booted into safe mode with networking. Unsuccessful. Ran Hijackthis, nothing unusual. I am at a loss of what to do. I do even know how to describe the situation succinctly enough to search and see if others have had the same problem.

Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).

Dell laptop Inspiron 1545, WRT54GS - "Connected With Limited Access" - drove me up the wall. Tried everything. Browsed other forums for hours. What did I do? Just for grins, and for NO particular reason, I switched from WEP to WPA Personal / TKIP in the router and to WPA / TKIP in the laptop and other PC, entered the ten-char key I've always used, and POOF - instant connection.

I have my wife's and my own desktops (both XP Home) and my laptop (Vista Home Premium) all connected to the same ADSL modem. I want to set permissions so that I can access and do what I want with any file on any machine from any other machine.
On the XP machines this was a breeze. I can access either machine from any other machine and do whatever I want. But on the Vista machine, I'm prevented from doing this. The only files on the Vista machine that I can access from the XP machines are in the "Public" folder. I can't access the Vista machine's root menu or even the files in my own folder from the XP machines. When I try, I get this complaint:
You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied. "T-pc" is the name of the name of the laptop in the "Workgroup" and "rlb" is my folder. I'm the administrator, so where do I go from here? How do I make Vista let the other machines access my files?

I am puzzled. The Indexed locations shown when I press the show all locations button are Microsoft Outlook Start Menu and Users. Only Microsoft Outlook is checked. I was trying out the search facility above the start button on Vista to look for a program and was very surprised when up popped a selection of files that are stored on an external hard drive that I use from time to time as a secondary backup. The files shown have not been accessed recently and at the time of the search the external drive was not connected. Hovering the cursor over the files told me that they were located on this external drive. why these files would have shown up on the search as I have not chosen to have the external drive indexed?

I have my laptop connecting to a server under AD control. My laptop is not joined to AD by design. I set up some files using 'Sync' to have them available to me offline. My AD password has since changed and I cannot connect to the server to have access to other files set up for offline access. When I attempt to remap the drive, I get an error stating I am already connected using the credentials provided. This is not true, since I cannot access the server. What do I need to do to fix this problem?

This is the error I get every time I try to complete the transfer: "The store you selected was saved on a 64bit machine. Windows Easy Transfer cannot apply the data." Is there a way to use WET to transfer files from a Vista-64bit installation? If not WET, is there another utility?

They are labled edb.chk, edb.log, edbres00001.jrs and edbres00002.jrs. Any recommendations on what they are and how to get rid of them?
