Windows Locator In IPP Settings Wont Stay Selected.

I am ahving some trouble trying to connect to the internet. I do not need to
network any other PC's its just the new Vista machine. I have dropped all my
firewalls and have set it to obtain an IP automatically. I am not quite a
novice at this but i am not an expert, so please bear with me.
I found a comment on a forum that said i need to select the windows locator
in the "client for microsoft networks" properties. If i ok that and keep all
the related windows open i can gain access to the net. The second i "ok" any
of the related windows i loose access and when checked, the windows locator
is again not selected.

In the Vista registry the left hand column lacks a reference to what item is being displayed in the right hand window. I.E.: It is difficult to knowwhat left hand branch is the parent of what is seen at the right...There is a minor reg hack that places a green ball, with a pointer inside,on the active left hand item, but I cannot locate that info.Anyone recall where the .reg file for this useful modification can be had?

Whenever I try to open up a window through the Start menu or from a desktop icon or Launchy to view a folder like 'My Documents' or 'Computer', or even 'Control Panel', the window opens for about two seconds before closing. And then the whole screen goes blank but for the desktop background and slowly reappears. What's the story, there? How do I remedy this? I want to be able to peruse my folders! I want to be able to adjust my screen's resolution! Why won't the windows stay open for me?

Using Vista Home and Windows Mail. Just d/l'd IE 8 and now in Windows Mail, the new mail is automatically selected and shows up in the Preview Pane. Before, I could select an old piece of mail and when new mail came in, it did not get selected until I chose to do this. I want this feature back, but don't know how to get it. The reason? It is my understanding that once a piece of mail is in the preview screen, the sender (spam or otherwise undesirable character), knows you have received it; or if in html format, it can open a virus. I know I can turn off the Preview and do have a button on the top menu to do this, but would prefer to not have to do this whenever going into the email program. Also, is it true that by looking at the Properties (instead of the Preview Pane) of an unopened email to view its content,

Does anyone know if you when have you selected a mail in the inbox, if you can make it darker? In Outlook and Outlook Express it was darker and easier for me. In Vista Mail, it is just so light. What I am talking about is when you put your mouse on the mail in your inbox, it is highlighted.

I used a very convenient little tool which was coloring a folder/key in the left pane of regedit with a different color. Vista's colors are too subdued for me.

I'm having a problem with the overlay title on selected clips feature on WMM bleeding from one pix to another. I have around 300 pix and all are fine but a couple of cells. I don't want to slow the transition on all pix and I don't think it's possible to do it on select ones. Is there any other way to correct this problem?

We have a PC with two User Accounts - both use Windows mail - one A/C has suddenly stopped printing E mails - when the print option is selected the slecetd E mail "freezes" and Windows Mail shows "not responding" and has be cloed down - the other A/C continues to print received E Mails without problem -

I have some pics in my Windows Photo Gallery that I need to delete.Every time I click on them,9right click or left click)it gives me the message"The files you have selected might be read-only or in a location that is unavailable."It won't let me go to the properties of these pics, and at one time when it would,I followed all the instructions on the help menu as to how to change a read-only file, etc.No luck whatsoever.I deleted the pictures from My Pictures, but I cannot get them deleted from Windows Photo Gallery.

I have two user accounts, one is an administrator. I don't want the standard account to be able to view the data in my account. I tried to "un-share folders but I keep getting this error message 'You could not stop sharing the selected folder.' Further info says that this folder is in a shared folder, huh? It shouldn't be.

I tried out Vista Ultimate 64bit for a month and got whipped by driver issues. I installed Vista Ultimate 32bit on a 2nd partition and tried using Windows Easy Transfer to transfer files and settings from the 64bit installation and pick them up in the 32bit installaion. This is the error I get every time I try to complete the transfer: "The store you selected was saved on a 64bit machine. Windows Easy Transfer cannot apply the data." Is there a way to use WET to transfer files from a Vista-64bit installation? If not WET, is there another utility?

I have a problem with the security settings in IE7. Everytime I reboot my settings change and I have to restore them. I have the settings set in custom level to allow programmatic clipboard access but it disables that and some other settings after a reboot. what I can do to make my settings stick?

I want to use my laptop with Vista x64 as both "HTPC" and as a Work computer. Problem: When using it as a HTPC i need to change the DPI scaling in order to be able to read any text on the 27" screen. This is perfectly fine, but when using it as a Work computer this DPI setting wont look nice on the 15" inch screen. So I have to change it and restart the computer, a very awkward process in the long run. One idea i had was to create two users with one used for the HTPC since the DPI setting is global (HKLM) together with screen resolution and other hardware settings (like sound output). I basically just changed the Font size, Icon size and Border sizes for the HTPC user. This works sort of but, unfortunately, only seems to be valid for the Desktop and a select few menus in Vista (like the start menu, main control paned window) most sub windows and dialog boxes are still displayed with the puny 9 pts font
Another wild idea might be to run a "DPI Change-script" at startup, if it's even possible to change the DPI that way. Has anyone tried anything similar? I suppose it needs a restart anyway, but at least it would be automatic. Is there a registry tweak to make the font change apply to everything in Vista. or, a tweak to make the DPI setting Local? (i.e only aplies to current user) I guess, if it would be possible to make Windows apply these (DPI) changes without needing a restart, that would be acceptable.

I have tried on many occasions to change my SMTP port from 25 to 587, but after I apply my changes and exit Mail and restart Mail, my SMTP ports resorts back to 25. The same thing happens when I change Outgoing Mail Authentication settings. I make the changes and things work, but as soon as I exit the program nothing sticks. Running Vista Home Premium with the latest updates.

i'm having a problem with windows update. It's not an error of some kind, but it appears as if it is set on never cheking for updates and even when i change the settings nothing happens. and when i push "check for updates" it says that it's not possible to check for updates cause the service is not running.

I cannot use or change the settings of Windows Update in any way. I've tried reinstalling the Windows Update Agent, but nothing changes. I have found no way of uninstalling it either. This alone is not the biggest problem, but the program has set itself to default and downloads hundreds of MB's of useless updates daily, which forces me to wait 30 minutes before the laptop turns on, and another 10 minutes of "reverting changes" because they "were not configured properly". Is there any way to fix this besides reformatting or reinstalling the OS? Install missing files? Somehow disable the agent? Uninstall it?

I want to change the settings of Windows explorer to open in a specific folder. I can do this for the shortcut under Programs>Accessories> Windows Explorer. But doing so does not affect the settings of Windows Explorer when I invoke it with the keyboard shortcut : "Windows-Key + E"

Just created a Windows Live email account (and hotmail account) because my current email provider is closing shortly. I prefer to use Windows Vista Mail but I can't find any pop3 settings for Live mail (or hotmail) Any pointers/links? P.S. I noticed Live mail front end includes newsgroups which i use a lot - I also use filters/rules - I also use Live messenger - Is it as good as Vista Mail?

I would like to create a file/files that have my newsgroup settings from Windows Mail, that I can import the next time I have to reinstall Vista. Does Windows Mail make a backup file? I searched the Vista help files but the only thing I saw was the Windows easy transfer wizard---I would like to keep this file in my Documents folder, which I back up to an external drive--Windows won't save the file to the same hard drive like I would prefer. Is there any other way to back up my Windows Mail settings?
I see in Windows Mail, the Tools>Accounts button will give me a new window, which allows me to click Export, which will produce an .iaf file. Is this what I am interested in?

I need to know if there is anyway to specifically set Vista to allow a program to see a certain Size for Virtual memory. oracle Products require Virtual Memory to be verified before they go through installation. The problem here is that Windows Vista Paging files are not seen as Virtual memory for some reason. The system I have is set with 4000 plus mb of Paging file but when the oracle check completes it shows 0 mb available. Going to a newer version of Oracle is not an option as this is a required product for a College Course. Going back to XP is not an option since no one ever wrote XP Drivers for this hardware. I've hausted all the resources from HP and Oracle and need to try this end of the problem now.

I have a Acer notebook. It had Norton security already installed. I removed this recently and put a AVG anti virus on. This seems to be fine. What I am finding is that when I turn on the computer the Firewall is off. I then reset it to on but again it is off on start up. This did not happen when Norton was installed.

We currently run a network of 14 servers and about 100 workstations. All servers run on Windows 2003. Our Exchange version is 2003 and all of our workstations run on Windows XP. I watched an MS video that stated that MS Mainstream support for XP will end 4/2009, and so the question has come up with our IT management of when and if we should upgrade all of our workstations to Vista. I know this is an internal decision, but would like anyone in the forum's input on their experience of doing this, and what can we expect if we don't upgrade and stay on XP.

I have purchased a Windows Vista license a short time ago and I have some difficulties with the folder option of remembering each folder settings. I have unset this option but Windows Vista still continues remembering the situation I leave each folder. What I would like is that all the folders were always initialized to a default, even a default for each kind of folder (I just wouldn't like Windows to store individual data for each folder).
