I have some pics in my Windows Photo Gallery that I need to delete.Every time I click on them,9right click or left click)it gives me the message"The files you have selected might be read-only or in a location that is unavailable."It won't let me go to the properties of these pics, and at one time when it would,I followed all the instructions on the help menu as to how to change a read-only file, etc.No luck whatsoever.I deleted the pictures from My Pictures, but I cannot get them deleted from Windows Photo Gallery.

I've noticed this and have seen a couple of posts but it seems most people don't "interpret" the post as intended. I have Vista 32bit. I am an administrator. If a file has the "read-only" attribute checked, I can NOT delete the file. Vista complains that I need "privileges in order to delete the file" and asks me to "try again". I have full permissions on the file, and I am the owner of the file. The issue stems from the fact that it's marked "read only". If I remove the read-only attribute, I can delete it fine!
What gives here? In XP, if you attempted to delete a read only file, it would prompt you telling you the file was read-only and asked if you were sure you wanted to delete it. Vista flat out implies I have no permissions to the file, which is untrue. I sometimes have network directories that contain thousands, maybe millions of files in them. Changing attributes on that many files, prior to deleting them poses significant problems.

I tried out Vista Ultimate 64bit for a month and got whipped by driver issues. I installed Vista Ultimate 32bit on a 2nd partition and tried using Windows Easy Transfer to transfer files and settings from the 64bit installation and pick them up in the 32bit installaion. This is the error I get every time I try to complete the transfer: "The store you selected was saved on a 64bit machine. Windows Easy Transfer cannot apply the data." Is there a way to use WET to transfer files from a Vista-64bit installation? If not WET, is there another utility?

I have a Canon PowerShot SD750 camera. This is what used to happen when I connected it to my computer - a window would pop up, it would ask me if where I want to download the picture, how they should be named, if the pictures should be deleted from my camera etc. It also gave me an option to set defaults to some of these settings and there was a checkbox "Don't ask me again" (or something like that). Silly me, I clicked on it.
From that point the window would no show up and all my pictures are transferred to my desktop once I connect the camera, no questions asked. That worked for a while but I want the pictures to go to a different folder now and I just can't change the default folder that I once set. How do I get the option window to reappear ? Where are these settings stored, on my camera or my desktop ? I cannot find them. I am running Vista 64 bits.

In some folders in photo gallery I have multiple copies of the same picture. Anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the extra pictures. If I try to delete it put the picture in the recycle Ben and deletes it from the Document/Pictures folders. Is there a way to clear folders in Photo Gallery or even clear the entire Photo Gallery and start over?

I have a serious problem to fix. I've written a WIndows Application using visual studio 2008 that uses an Access database to hold data. I've placed the database in the same folder as the executible "C:Program FilesMyAppMyData.mdb". The program installs and work fine under XP and but when installed and run under Vista, I'm getting file permission errors. All user installation and running of the application is done as the ADMINISTATOR, the only user profile created.
My eariler version of the application, written with VS 2005 installs (DOT NET Framework 2.0) and works fine under Vista. I can't change the database location, as eariler versions of this same program have been running and working fine under XP. It would mean changing the data file location for over 200 customers. It would cause a great deal of head aches to modify the application to use a different
folder for the database.
SO here's my questions. What permissions do I need to get read/write access to my data file? What steps can be taken to remove the security attributes on my data file? Can I change these permissions from within my application? The application exe file does have its compatibilities property set to "Run as an administrator". Do I have to run the application under compatibility mode of "Windows XP (Service pack 2)"?

I have a PC which has XP installed and a new desktop with Visa Home Premium installed. I have put some of my Word files on to the laptop from the PC but it cant read them. Is there a way to get my laptop to read my PC files once I have transferred them or do I have to get XP installed on to my laptop?

I am absolutely going mad trying to fix this. I have purchased a laptop with Vista Home Premium installed ( I am a Vista novice BTW). Created a new profile for my partner ( mine is set up as the administrator) and transferred some pictures to the Desktop. Few days later I couldn't see the folder containing the pictures on the desktop; I tracked it back through the explorer. I transfer them to the documents folder ad The next time it is completely disappeared. Same happened with my pictures later on in my profile. I have searched the pictures everywhere, nothing and of course I have not deleted them, but they seem disappeared. I have tried a recovery software and nothing. Now, recoveing pictures would be good, but avoiding this happening again is my main concern.
I have also noticed that when downloading the software I use looses the link to the folder where the files are stored. it seems there is something wrong with the default folders set up in my profile (Documents, downloads, Pictures and so on).

Sometimes when I download pictures from my digital camera, it creates "thumbs" which I can not open. The properties shows it as a db.file. This has only happened since I have had Windows Vista. XP was so much easier...wish I had it back!!! I read through the posts and checked to make sure the correct tabs were checked and not checked that had been suggested but the "thumbs" are still there!

With Windows running any Office program besides 07, one cannot -- without downloading an update -- read .docx files. With the new Ubuntu and Open Office, you can and no downloads or updates required.

While installing a program, the process was interrupted and the install created 62000 files using 160gig in my syswow64 folder virtually using all my hd space. However when you go into the syswow64 folder, there is only about 2000 files and 1 gig of space used. I have set the folders to show all hidden files. When I go into the ms dos prompt and do a directory, the files match the 1 gig data.
I can't delete these 62000 files and free up the 160 gig space because I don't believe they are actually there on the hard drive but explorer thinks they are there. Is there any way to rebuild, sync, or otherwise get windows explorer to recognize the correct amount of files that are actually in my syswow64 folder.(2000files 1gig and not 62000files 160gig)

I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I have a folder on my desktop named Downloads that I use for, shockingly, downloads. Anyway, there are a couple of files in the folder that are, apparently, not really there. They are like ghost files. They used to exist but now they are still visible but not recognized by any program. Also, they have a size of 0 kb!
I'd like to get rid of them but they refuse to be deleted. When I try to delete them, I get this:

I write click on a folder and see that the "Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)" attribute is checked and grayed out. I uncheck it, click Apply, and leave the "Apple changes to this folder, subfolders and files" radio button clicked. I hit OK and a few minutes later all the permissions are supposedly updated. I then try to copy a file into a subfolder and... I can't. It's as though the folder, itself, is Read-only and that the "Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)" checkbox does indeed "only apply to files in folders" and not to folders, themselves.
I go to a folder that has no subfolders in it and see that the "Read- only (Only applies to files in folder)" checkbox for that is grayed out and checked, as well. I uncheck it and right click and... it works. I right click on the parent directory (which contains no other subfolders) and do the same thing and... it's still grayed out.

I can't tell you how close to tears I come with Vista. I have a vast number of PDF and Word documents that I must constantly use -rearrange - organize - categorize...If I am using the "Details" view - I can't look at the titles of the files the way I WANT TO ... I must either see EVERYTHING as "Size column to fit" or worse, "Szie all columns to fit."
If I am using the "List" view and moving files in my main folder into (or out of) several sub folders, the entire list will automatically move about when I perform a drag and drop operation, from the folder at the start of the list (where I drop it) to suddenly shifting many columns back to where I got the file from ... OMG I want to scream!
If I use "Small Icons" I can't read the entire title of half of my files and can't read their size or dates."Tiles" and "Medium Icons" are just too big ...Why can't I actually have "classic view" when I try to set up the windows with CLASSIC VIEW???I swear - it's as though someone at Microsoft actually believes that most people only play video games and not serious work.Is there anyway to actually make folders open and function like all of the old Windows systems did? These nifty bells and whistles consume so much of my time and I'm close to never coming back to this platform again.

I don't know how this happened, but I didn't do it myself. For some reason,my Program Files directory has been changed to the Photos directory type, so it changed from the details like file type, size, etc., to rating, photo size, etc.I cannot figure out how to change the directory back to a General file folder type. The toolbar shows things like Slide Show, etc.The sub-directories are all fine and appear as a General type. I'm running Vista Ultimate 32-bit, without SP1.How do I change the folder type back to General?I can't figure out how with this single folder.

Using Vista Home and Windows Mail. Just d/l'd IE 8 and now in Windows Mail, the new mail is automatically selected and shows up in the Preview Pane. Before, I could select an old piece of mail and when new mail came in, it did not get selected until I chose to do this. I want this feature back, but don't know how to get it. The reason? It is my understanding that once a piece of mail is in the preview screen, the sender (spam or otherwise undesirable character), knows you have received it; or if in html format, it can open a virus. I know I can turn off the Preview and do have a button on the top menu to do this, but would prefer to not have to do this whenever going into the email program. Also, is it true that by looking at the Properties (instead of the Preview Pane) of an unopened email to view its content,

Does anyone know if you when have you selected a mail in the inbox, if you can make it darker? In Outlook and Outlook Express it was darker and easier for me. In Vista Mail, it is just so light. What I am talking about is when you put your mouse on the mail in your inbox, it is highlighted.

I have 4 episodes of a show in my recycle bin - each episode is 1/2 hour long. I try to delete them, but I get a message saying Calculating time remaining and it just keeps showing that and never gives me a time or deletes the items. It says the speed is 0 bytes / sec. Any idea how I can get rid of these files?

Certain files (like exe files) and folders (if they contain exe files) just can't be deleted. I get "You need permisson to do this". I'm the Administrator and only user of the machine. I tried activating and logging in a the "hidden" Administrator, but that didn't help at all.
I 've tried with UAC on and off. With it on I get the joy of clicking about 6 times before I end up with the "you need permission" (shouldn't that be checked first??) No wonder people turn that "feature" off.
I can rename the exe files and usually delete them after a reboot, isn't that very strange?
- Media Player was broken, but seems to work now, it actaully stops playing when you close it.
- I've been getting a "Parts of Logos has stopped working" or something like that error message at every startup for the last weeks.
- Sleep mode worked the first week only. Now it never wakes up.
- IE7 crashes at least once a day.
I've used XP for years and it was never this broken.

Somehow, I have created two copies of all my files. (I have Vista Home Basic) I have no idea how I did this or when, or if this is what Vista does.
1: copy is under: Desktop - Hal, and
2: is under Desktop - Computer - Compaq (C - Users - Hal.
Should I delete one? If so, which one? It appears that they are exactly the same, but I haven't checked every file, and when I add or update/change a file it goes to both places. (I am the only one on the computer) They both have: AppData, and the Green color files, Contacts, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Favorites, Links, Music, Pictures, etc.
When I use "Search", it appears that the returned files properties are under 1 (Desktop - Hal) and when I use "Save As" for a file, it also goes to 1. Therefore, I think I should delete 2, but would I delete "Users" or just "Hal"? Am I getting into dangerous waters in doing this or should I just leave it alone?

I was trying to remove a program file AT&T security Installation Wizard. The folder was corrupted. I was able to delete a few of the files. but two of them kept saying need permission. Now I am the Admin and I do have UAC unchecked. In God's name whose permission do I need to get rid of these 2 remaining files.

In [Computer>C:>Users] there's a file for an old Windows user name that we no longer use that's taking up over 1/2 gig. I have deleted this name already through User Accounts in the Control Panel, but the file still remains on the hard-drive. Windows doesn't allow me to delete it for some reason

I purchased a new laptop with windows vista premium.Installed my new hp deskjet f4280.Coputer shows instaled printer nad no driver problems.When I try to print the file goes to print que and then self delets. befor I smash this vista machine over bills box.The printer worked great on old machine with xp.I updated drivers and checked addmin rights and ports,did hp diognostics and everything fine.checked firwall and disable.niothing.

I've been faithfully backing up my C: to another internal hard disk on a weekly basis for over a year now. I just received an error message telling me that my E: is full, so the most recent backup was unable to be completed. How do I delete old backup files - is it as simple as deleting the particular backup folder and subfolders? Also, can you recommend any strategy on which backups to delete and which ones to keep? I'm running Vista Home Premium, using Backup & Restore Center utility for the weekly backups.

When I'm deleting a large number of files, it takes forever. Why is this? This a new laptop which is supposed to be faster. It has 4 gig memory & a large hard drive. It is also very slow when emptying the recycle bin. In fact, everything in Vista seems to be slower than in XP, even though the older computer was 4 years old. What's the big deal with Vista supposed to be better? IMO it's not at all

I have read your tutoral "How to Speed up the performance of Vista". Item 33 "Clear the Vista Temporary Files" lead me to believe that I could delete them all without any bad effect. Is this true? In trying to get more speed I have ran CCleaner & Disk Cleanup. I cleared sent mail, trash, and browsing history. I also deleted all restore points except the last one. I checked the tempory files and the oldest one was dated 6-12, but I have 98 left. This must take a lot of space. Can I delete all of the tempory files?
