I have a PC which has XP installed and a new desktop with Visa Home Premium installed. I have put some of my Word files on to the laptop from the PC but it cant read them. Is there a way to get my laptop to read my PC files once I have transferred them or do I have to get XP installed on to my laptop?
View 6 RepliesMany have experienced this and I haven't found any solutions on this or other forums. Normally, I like to save the word document I am working on every once in a while. The first few times I do this, there is no problem, but eventually Word will decide that the file you are currently working on is read-only and cannot be saved. The read-only box in the file properties is NOT ticked and all security permissions are in force for the user. I am tired of saving my file under a different name every 5 minutes.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a serious problem to fix. I've written a WIndows Application using visual studio 2008 that uses an Access database to hold data. I've placed the database in the same folder as the executible "C:Program FilesMyAppMyData.mdb". The program installs and work fine under XP and but when installed and run under Vista, I'm getting file permission errors. All user installation and running of the application is done as the ADMINISTATOR, the only user profile created.
My eariler version of the application, written with VS 2005 installs (DOT NET Framework 2.0) and works fine under Vista. I can't change the database location, as eariler versions of this same program have been running and working fine under XP. It would mean changing the data file location for over 200 customers. It would cause a great deal of head aches to modify the application to use a different
folder for the database.
SO here's my questions. What permissions do I need to get read/write access to my data file? What steps can be taken to remove the security attributes on my data file? Can I change these permissions from within my application? The application exe file does have its compatibilities property set to "Run as an administrator". Do I have to run the application under compatibility mode of "Windows XP (Service pack 2)"?
I've noticed this and have seen a couple of posts but it seems most people don't "interpret" the post as intended. I have Vista 32bit. I am an administrator. If a file has the "read-only" attribute checked, I can NOT delete the file. Vista complains that I need "privileges in order to delete the file" and asks me to "try again". I have full permissions on the file, and I am the owner of the file. The issue stems from the fact that it's marked "read only". If I remove the read-only attribute, I can delete it fine!
What gives here? In XP, if you attempted to delete a read only file, it would prompt you telling you the file was read-only and asked if you were sure you wanted to delete it. Vista flat out implies I have no permissions to the file, which is untrue. I sometimes have network directories that contain thousands, maybe millions of files in them. Changing attributes on that many files, prior to deleting them poses significant problems.
With Windows running any Office program besides 07, one cannot -- without downloading an update -- read .docx files. With the new Ubuntu and Open Office, you can and no downloads or updates required.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAt first I had an apparent common problem: my user profile, which happened to be the admin profile, stopped working and would show error your user profile was not loaded correctly. You have been logged on with a temporary profile yada yada yada yada. Main problem besides the annoyance was I could obviously not find my documents. I called Dell tech support. They found all my valuable WORD documents. We then created a new folder and moved all the valuable files to it. So far so good. Now......Dell tech decides he wants to check for any MS updates. There were 14 updates needed. Downloaded and installed. Same problem with the user profile - but now the WORD documents are GONE. Nowhere. Folder everything gone after the MS updates. Plenty of free C drive space (like only 30% full) and plenty or RAM, so it should not have needed the disk space. Problem is after 4 hours the Dell tech could not recover the files. He found some *.temp files but when machine was shut down those disappeared, too.
Machine is running Vista and has been flawless for 7 months until the problem with the user profile. BTW System Restore will not work. We tried that first thing to try and fix the user profile issue. It returns the message it did not work completly once it brings the desktop back up. It did not work before the Windows update nor after the Windows update. Where did the WORD doc files go after the MS updates? Am I screwed? Any software available or ways to recover these very valuable lost files? I know I know shoulda woulda backed them up. I had three MS Word 2007 docx files on my hard drive. I deleted them and emptied the trash. I immediately used some File Recovery programs to try to recover them. The programs were unable to find them. That seems very strange to me. Is it possibly because they are docx files? This is a relatively new file type by Microsoft, right? I am using MS Word with Vista Home Premium.
I should probably add that the programs cannot find files with the names of the files I deleted. Are the names changed when they are deleted and the Recycle Bin emptied? I have heard that files are not wiped clean from your drive. Only the directories are changes, but the data is still there until it is written over..................

If I copy a file from another PC to my USB memory stick, then open it on my Vista laptop, make some changes and click save I get an error message saying the file is now G:~[134].tmp and is corrupted. I cannot recover the document, and it disappears entirely from the memory stick.If I copy the document directly to my laptop hard drive, I work as a teacher in a small school and 3 of my colleagues have reported the same issue. All use Vista, Word 2003, but different makes of laptop. We have tried using new/different memory sticks but the problem continues. Our XP desktops are unaffected.
I have a new HP laptop that came with windows vista home premium, and I cannot get it to print any office XP word documents or PDF files. What is really odd is that it registers the printer, shows the ink available in each cartridge, and the printer will print my emails from comcast. I loaded the newest drivers, updated everything. I am stumped. Microsoft Vista will not print microsoft word documents.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed Works Suite 2006 in my Vista Home Premium computer. Everything works fine apart from Word 2002. I am unable to open Word by clicking on document files. If I double click on a document file in Explorer nothing happens. If I right click and select Open With, and then click on wordicon, nothing happens. I am also unable to launch Word from the Works Suite program launcher. I can open Word, no problem, and it appears to work fine, but to edit a document I have to search for it from within Word, which is often inconvient. I have un-installed the suite, and re-installed it, but the problem still persists.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI write click on a folder and see that the "Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)" attribute is checked and grayed out. I uncheck it, click Apply, and leave the "Apple changes to this folder, subfolders and files" radio button clicked. I hit OK and a few minutes later all the permissions are supposedly updated. I then try to copy a file into a subfolder and... I can't. It's as though the folder, itself, is Read-only and that the "Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)" checkbox does indeed "only apply to files in folders" and not to folders, themselves.
I go to a folder that has no subfolders in it and see that the "Read- only (Only applies to files in folder)" checkbox for that is grayed out and checked, as well. I uncheck it and right click and... it works. I right click on the parent directory (which contains no other subfolders) and do the same thing and... it's still grayed out.
I can't tell you how close to tears I come with Vista. I have a vast number of PDF and Word documents that I must constantly use -rearrange - organize - categorize...If I am using the "Details" view - I can't look at the titles of the files the way I WANT TO ... I must either see EVERYTHING as "Size column to fit" or worse, "Szie all columns to fit."
If I am using the "List" view and moving files in my main folder into (or out of) several sub folders, the entire list will automatically move about when I perform a drag and drop operation, from the folder at the start of the list (where I drop it) to suddenly shifting many columns back to where I got the file from ... OMG I want to scream!
If I use "Small Icons" I can't read the entire title of half of my files and can't read their size or dates."Tiles" and "Medium Icons" are just too big ...Why can't I actually have "classic view" when I try to set up the windows with CLASSIC VIEW???I swear - it's as though someone at Microsoft actually believes that most people only play video games and not serious work.Is there anyway to actually make folders open and function like all of the old Windows systems did? A friend has word processor files with the extension .wps created in Works 4 in Win95. He has bought a new computer with Vista loaded. He says he's unable to get Vista (I think he said Works 9) to read these old files.How can he convert them

I told his wife I'd go through them but impossible if my computer won't read them. I believe most of them were made on XP and I have Vista. Called Gateway but they didn't know. I tried a couple on an HP with XP and they all were read. Does anyone know if this is a Vista problem or is it my computer?
My warranty is up in May so I'm hoping if it's the computer I'll have time to get it fixed under warranty.
Another Vista Ultimate 32bit weird prob I have. Whenever I insert any disc be it CD/DVD, and I double-click on the DVD icon to open it, I keep getting "Prepare this disc" option to Live format the disc. The disc could be anything a closed session disc, a manufacturer disc, I keep getting this prob. So only two ways to go ahead.
1. I've DOpus - Directory Opus, an alternative to Windows Explorer in which I can Sometimes view the disc, though not always
2. The best way I've figured out is for me to simply click "Next" and wait for Windows to tell me that it cannot format my disc and then I can access the contents.
3. Auto-run registry fix doesnt cure it. (updated after flavirus replied)
Any Ideas why this is happening? I uninstalled the drivers of my drives, I've two, Sony DVD-writer SATA and Lite-on DVD-writer IDE. In WinXP I didn't have this prob with these drives, so i know this is a software issue.
I have an emachine w3619 with dual core 2160 intel, 1.5 gig ram and windows vista 32 bit home premium. Recently my cd/dvd drive stopped reading cds. When i went into device manager it said the device was functioning properly and the drivers were up to date. I uninstalled the cd/dvd rom drive and restarted that did not fix the problem either. I deleted the upper and lower filters through regedit as some people had mentioned this did not fix the problem for me. My cd/dvd rom shows up in "computer" but always acts as if the drive is empty. Anyone else had the same problem?

I have a problem to read a contents of CDs. I can see DVDs, but CDs not. These CDs are originals from software producers and magazines. Under Win XP I have no problem to read all medias.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been using an SD card in my laptop for portable storage for ~6 months. Suddenly, I have started getting an error message saying that "Disk is write protected." The tab on the SD card is in the unlock position. I have tried using the properties window to change it but their is no option to change it from Read Only or Change Permissions. If I click on a folder on the SD card and try to change it via the Properties Windows the window says that it is "Read Only" but when I uncheck "Read Only," it says I can't
because the disk is Read Only. And again I can't find any option to change

I have copied all my internet favourites folders in from Windows XP (IE7). I didn't use a password in XP and still don't in Vista.
Now, I can't organise or add-to any of the folders in Vista. It says they are read-only.
When I display the properties of the folders, they have a green square (mixed content) in the read-only tick-box. I switch it off and accept the prompt which says that it will apply to files and sub-folders.
But when I go to use them they are still read-only, and when I look at their properties, they are unchanged - still flagged with mixed content. And I still can't organise or add to them.
This morning I was able to access my SD card for my camera with no problem. But then all of a sudden I went to download some pictures that I had taken afterwards and the computer doesn't recognize the card. When I unplug it from the reader it does the ejection sound but when I plug it in it gives an error sound (three small low grade beeps). I put the SD back in my camera and the pictures are still there. Why is Vista not recognizing the card all of a sudden?

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy company has an Excel application we have developed and we use an Installer program to distribute it. The installer default is to install the program into a Program File that is named. This works flawlessly on xp but on any computer that has Vista installed, the file opens in Read Only, which defeats our entire application. The read only format can not be changed in any of the obvious ways (under Properties etc). This is a huge problem for us. Is there any way around it?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm messing around with this motherboard my dad had RMA'd to see if I can turn it into a usuable computer. Works fine but the one thing that's got me perplexed is the DVD drives plugged into it. The DVD writer seems to "read when it wants to", which is really weird. A lot of the time, it just won't read anything but sometimes it does read discs (I even burnt a disc using it). The drive is there in Windows Explorer and the BIOS also catches it but I can't get it to boot from the DVD drive (but it DID boot once so I managed to install Windows from it). In Windows I put discs in and it makes no attempt to read them...unless it suddenly WANTS to read them and then does. Does this make any sense? A drive almost literally reading discs when it feels like it wants to read them.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP media center edition and have just bought an upgrade DVD to Vista. I have 2 DVD players on my machine but neither of them run the DVD. The only file that appears visible is a readme file and that says "This disc contains a "UDF" file system and requires an operating system that supports the ISO-13346 "UDF" file system specification."
When I boot from the DVD drive with the Vista DVD in it it starts the installation but the product key I have only allows for an upgrade and tells me I have to launch it from my current operating system. I am tearing my hair out at this stage.
