I want to change the settings of Windows explorer to open in a specific folder. I can do this for the shortcut under Programs>Accessories> Windows Explorer. But doing so does not affect the settings of Windows Explorer when I invoke it with the keyboard shortcut : "Windows-Key + E"
i'm having a problem with windows update. It's not an error of some kind, but it appears as if it is set on never cheking for updates and even when i change the settings nothing happens. and when i push "check for updates" it says that it's not possible to check for updates cause the service is not running.
I cannot use or change the settings of Windows Update in any way. I've tried reinstalling the Windows Update Agent, but nothing changes. I have found no way of uninstalling it either. This alone is not the biggest problem, but the program has set itself to default and downloads hundreds of MB's of useless updates daily, which forces me to wait 30 minutes before the laptop turns on, and another 10 minutes of "reverting changes" because they "were not configured properly". Is there any way to fix this besides reformatting or reinstalling the OS? Install missing files? Somehow disable the agent? Uninstall it?
I have a problem with the security settings in IE7. Everytime I reboot my settings change and I have to restore them. I have the settings set in custom level to allow programmatic clipboard access but it disables that and some other settings after a reboot. what I can do to make my settings stick?
My Windows Explorer has had the most annoying set of attributes, ever since I got Vista and I can't find a way to change them. When I open a folder, the files always want to default to a large icon view with a preview screen. I change them by customizing the folder and they sometimes change back. Some folders aren't customizable at all. Every folder is defaulted to be a pictures folder, but I want all folders to be just files.
If I want a pictures folder, of which I only have a few, I should be able to set only those folders as pictures. The windows folders don't need a Rating column or a Date Taken column. I want the details. My C: drive and Windows folder views are unchangeable other than manually setting the columns on and off. Then they change right back. Where can I change the default view of all folders?
Is there a possibility to change space between icons in windows explorer. I wanted to make it shorter, like in Windows XP. I added an imge to show what space I think about.
I have recently installed software called 'Tune Up Utilites 2010' and immediately found a vast improvement and one its recommendations was to increase resolution to 1680 x 1050. Having then done that in 'Display Properties' it then advises to 'Set dpi to 96'.
However, I cannot find how to make changes to dpi.
At first I had no problems for the last 4 months when I hooked up my new TV to my laptop. I didn't even change any graphic sttings. It worked great right out of the box. I am using a standard VGA-VGA cable. Last week I hooked up my laptop to an old CRT display to do our taxes. I had to play with the graphic settiings for the CRT monitor to look OK.
Now, when I hook up the TV to the laptop, it only has the middle part of the screen showing the desktop. I have played with the Graphic settings, but no matter what I do, I cannot get it to look like it did before with the wide screen.
Today I downloaded the new free AVG. I have this and Spyware blaster and Super antispyware installed. I ran a scan with te AVG and it found Trojan's, adware, etc, or so it seemed. When the summary came up at the end a result of 0 (as in nothing found) came up in each categry, with about 214 in the warnings category, potential threats. Did the AVG somehow mistake the protection files for the.
The software on both mine and my dad's laptops is pretty identical, and the same result showed up on both. I wasn't sure what to do at the end. I haven't changed any settings and as I understand it all the threats were removed. At any rate I ran the scan again and nothing was found.
I am having problems backing up using Vista Home Premium. For some reason I am unable to change my backup settings to enable me to save to anything other than my "D" drive. Ideally I would like to save to the "C" on my PC but when trying to do so I get the following text. File backup could not save your automatic backup settings for the following reasons: Your backup configuration is not valid. Review your backup settings (0x81000029)
Can someone tell me how to change my internet settings on vista? It will not let me access internet settings from the control panel(don't know why). In the control panel all of the icons also have labels , but not the internet settings.
I'm logged in as Administrator. I go into "Date and Time," select the tab "Internet Time," and then hit the button "Change settings..." And I get the error message "You do not have permission to perform this task. Please contact your computer administrator for help." But *I* am the administrator of this computer! I'm logged in as Administrator!
I'm using a USB tuner (Avermedia Volar x). It is compatible with Vista x64 (I'm using Ult). The tuner works fine, the tuner program works in Vista x64, channels are tuned in, and I can watch TV. However, I've just noticed, that if I leave power options on balanced (the default), the audio is fine. But, if I change it to power saver, the audio (when I watch TV on the tuner) goes out of sync. I tried changing USB settings to disabled (under advanced power settings (under power saver), no change the audio is still out of sync.
i'm logged in as an administrator yet i can't change the settings in automatic update. i can see the settings but they are greyed and "locked". Has anyone seen this issue? It may have been there all along i just never cared to change the settings until the pending SP1 release. i want to be there when it happens instead of the default setting of 3am!
I have been using my Windows Mail account now for over a year. I have not changed any settings. I have Norton antivirus and I have not changed any of it's settings.
I want it to default sort by name and not size and I want it that way for all folders I open. I find that some apps use the windows protocol and it is annoying having to change it there too. I was able to do it in XP and 2000 but it is not as intuitive in Vista.I want it to sort by name and I would like some other view tabs instead of what's displayed. I know how to do that by adding sort (tabs) by right clicking but how do I make it universal and how do I make it stay that way?
Is there any way possible to configure Vista and Windows Explorer to display the entire directory and/or filenames when Explorer is being used? Constantly resizing the display of the contents of Windows Explorer has always been a PITA. Especially in Vista
When ever I change any settings from stock to OC and reboot or cold start my computer starts for about 3-4 seconds then reboots and most of the time posts on up and runs normal. Every now and then it will reboot a 3rd time but then goes back to stock settings and continues posting. I never get a bsod (bios F2), all power saving options disabled in bios, PCI-E at 100, memory timings loose. Once it posts it runs perfectly. I tried all kinds of different memory timings, goosed the cpu vid to 1.3, raised mch by .1 and fsb volts by .1 in an effort to find out why this posting phenomenon occurs. No matter what I have tried, when I OC this posting regimen occurs. I play Supreme Commander Forged alliance alot and no issues the game just rocks with all the goodies at max and 60fps with fraps. Any smoking grey matter out there with a clue?
i used advanced vista optimiser to give my laptop a good clean out as i do every week. but this time when i went to log on the diagnostic comes and says either change proxy settings or try resetting local connection setting. i tried resetting many a time which as done no good. web address bar states where its going but the diag box comes on again.so in the mean time while this is all going on a new tab keeps on opening by its self and saying the same thing, this started to happen before i cleaned my l.p but it was just redirecting to a blank page.
that is why i did the clean.anyhow resetting the lan did not work so i reset the internet expolorer in the tools on the bar. which as worked but the same thing is still happening with the tab ,but now its redirecting to all the freebiee sites and it will not stop. i have spyware-adware-trojan software on my l.p and still no good it did pick up 3 infections which it sorted out, its driving me f*&^%*ng nuts:mad::mad:
little by little I am learning about the differences in XP and Vista. Well, one of them is that Vista no longer uses Documents & Settingsfolder, but a Users folders. If this is true, why do I have a D&S folder under my Vista boot when I do a explore and why can't I open it if I am the administrator?
When I got started moving/ downloading files I had to change my UAC (user account control) settings lower, or remove them all together. Will this have an adverse effect to my lap top? Note: I don't have the site up yet.
When you change icons in Vista you can use the ones embedded in files like explorer.exe and imageres.dll. I just went to change my "Computer" icon and this window came up showing the icons available in explorer.exe (Screenshot Attached). Is this normal? Are there supposed to be XP icons in Vista explorer.exe?
I found a tweak on tweakvista a while back that changed explorer to always open in explore mode, so no matter what folder I opened, it was always in explore... in xp I changed this setting in folder options, under the folder types, but I can't find this setting anywhere - I have searched and searched, but I can't find this tweak again!
I have a quad-boot Intel CoreDuo machine with 4 GB of memory and an ATI AIW X1900 Radeon (multi-booting courtesy of EasyBCD). To put the matter as quickly as possible, all four systems (Vista 32, Vista 64, XP, and Ubuntu) have been happily coexisting for a long time. I haven't used Vista 64 for about 10 days and went in to do some work on it this morning. To my surprise, the video disappeared immediately after the green startup wait indicator. Eventually, after about the usual amount of time and hard disk activity, the startup sound came on but absolutely no video. I restored my full backup of the Vista 64 partition from last Sunday=97 same problem!
I went in on safe mode but it is impossible to change video settings or install new drivers in safe mode so that was a dead end. I tried the repair utility that comes with Vista but it could find no problem with startup. My working hypothesis is that something has gone wrong with the video drivers although that may not be the case. Even if it were, I can think of no way of fixing it short of completely rebuilding the Vista 64 system checked desperately do not want to do
When I open windows explorer in either XP or Vista it opens the "My Document" folder as the default. However I only want "My Computer" to be expanded and everything else left unexpanded.
I need to change the display filename colors in Vista Windows Explorer similar to the MAC O/S Feature. This question does NOT deal with Encrypted Files or Compressed Files. I simply want to change the display names of the files to colors such as BLUE, GREY, etc., just like I can do on the MAC O/S for the past 5 years.
I do NOT want to use any third party software file managers. There must be a way to do it in Windows since APPLE has been doing it for 60 months now. I can't believe that Windows STILL Cannot perform this simple task! If you have a working solution using Windows Explorer please email me and let me know.
I wasn't quite sure if IE8 was the culprit, but it became apparent once I removed it. Internet Explorer 8 interferes with the functionality in Windows Explorer for Vista. Say for example: With IE8 installed, open up "Computer". Close it, then open it again. It should be instantaneous. But its not. A window will take over to 10 seconds to show its initial contents. Once its open though, its very fast because the instance is already running. But once it closes it will take another 10 seconds to open again. Internet Explorer 8 itself opens up very slowly even after the first opening. Can any Vista users verify this?
1. Install IE8
2. Go: Start > click Computer
3. Close that Window.
4. Repeat step 2.
Is it an instantaneous opening or does the window take more than 5 seconds to populate? Repeat those steps with opening Internet Explorer. Is it the same? If so, welcome to the club. Does Microsoft have any way to report this bug to developers?
I want to use my laptop with Vista x64 as both "HTPC" and as a Work computer. Problem: When using it as a HTPC i need to change the DPI scaling in order to be able to read any text on the 27" screen. This is perfectly fine, but when using it as a Work computer this DPI setting wont look nice on the 15" inch screen. So I have to change it and restart the computer, a very awkward process in the long run. One idea i had was to create two users with one used for the HTPC since the DPI setting is global (HKLM) together with screen resolution and other hardware settings (like sound output). I basically just changed the Font size, Icon size and Border sizes for the HTPC user. This works sort of but, unfortunately, only seems to be valid for the Desktop and a select few menus in Vista (like the start menu, main control paned window) most sub windows and dialog boxes are still displayed with the puny 9 pts font
Another wild idea might be to run a "DPI Change-script" at startup, if it's even possible to change the DPI that way. Has anyone tried anything similar? I suppose it needs a restart anyway, but at least it would be automatic. Is there a registry tweak to make the font change apply to everything in Vista. or, a tweak to make the DPI setting Local? (i.e only aplies to current user) I guess, if it would be possible to make Windows apply these (DPI) changes without needing a restart, that would be acceptable.
