Backing Up Windows Mail Newsgroup Settings

Jun 14, 2009

I would like to create a file/files that have my newsgroup settings from Windows Mail, that I can import the next time I have to reinstall Vista. Does Windows Mail make a backup file? I searched the Vista help files but the only thing I saw was the Windows easy transfer wizard---I would like to keep this file in my Documents folder, which I back up to an external drive--Windows won't save the file to the same hard drive like I would prefer. Is there any other way to back up my Windows Mail settings?

I see in Windows Mail, the Tools>Accounts button will give me a new window, which allows me to click Export, which will produce an .iaf file. Is this what I am interested in?

Backing Up Firefox Settings/bookmarks

Jan 15, 2009

it seems I'm close to having to do a complete reformat/system recovery. I have just about everything backed up on externals anyway, so it's not the end of the world. My major concern is my firefox settings/bookmarks. Is there a settings file or files that I can back up, and then, when I re-install firefox on the fresh OS, copy those files to the "new" OS so it automatically knows all my settings and bookmarks?

Backing Up Outlook 2003 Custom Settings

Aug 7, 2009

This is for XP more than for Vista. I have been using Outlook since as far as I can remember but, there are times that I want to ring its neck or tear it apart limb from limb...I guess is better I don't know who the creator is But I digress... Anyways, back to my original thought. I have been having some issues with Outlook (best to use a new thread for this) so I decided to change to Mozilla Thunderbird but it didn't work like I thought it would (again... new thread). Bottom line is ...I have to go back to Outlook 2003. My pet peeve is that, even though I back up my pst files, eveytime I need to do a clean Outlook 2003 install or simple migration of sorts, I loose my custom settings, rules & alerts, etc, Is there an easy way to back up all these custom settings as well so you can migrate Outlook painlessly? I have done the google 'till my eyes drew blood but all I am getting are mixed solutions or me having to install a 3rd party software...Right now I have 3 e-mail accounts being handled by Outlook, my Office Personal, Company's bulk e-mail and Company's g-mail so I use a lot of custom settings.

Newsgroup Part Of Windows Mail

Jun 14, 2009

I bought a new laptop with Vista 64 bit and am setting it up, etc. I have a problem with the newsgroup part of windows mail. I still have my old laptop and it still posts to the newsgroups via outlook express 6. I'm using it right now. Incidentally, Bellsouth/ATT is going to drop newsgroups next month.I have the same settings for the account in both laptops. This one is running XP pro. When I set up the acct on the Vista one, the headers came in asusual. Everything works as usual, except when I click on send, it doesn't send. I get an error message instead. I get this one: "windows mail could not post your message. etc...snip.. 441posting failed rejected by post filter port 119,secure (ssl): no, server error :401 error number: 0x800CCCA9" Is there a hidden trick to setting it up so it sends? I searched the net and one guy had the same problem and resolved it by changing the mimo to uuncode, or something like that, I forget exactly what they were, but I found them buried in a menur on my system somewhere, and made the change but it didn't fix mine.

Missing Newsgroup In Windows Mail

May 13, 2008

Vista SP1 install I had to reinstall (not restore) the entire system much to my regret. In the process I added a newsgroup account in Windows Mail and downloaded my regular newsgroups but could not find alt.binaries.food which I have been reading for quite some time (And in fact still reading it on a XP machine with OE so I know the group is alive and active).

After messing with it for over a day I chatted with EarthLink and other than to say its a "Vista problem" they provided no real help or direction. When I Google "missing alt.binaries.food and Vista" there are an amazing number of people with the same apparent problem description but no proposed or found solutions.

Then I added Thunderbird to the Vista system this afternoon and viola, alt.binaries.food is there alive and well. So it doesn't appear to be this computer but rather either something in Windows Mail or my setup. Does anyone have a clue? Or does this seem to point in some direction to the group?

Difficulties Backing Up E-mail To A Flash Drive

Mar 8, 2009

I'm trying to help a friend with Windows Vista copy her e-mail storage to a flash drive for backup. I found the location of the storage folder (which is not easy, it's listed under Tools, Options, Advanced). I tried copying the "Local Folders" folder, which is the master folder for all the e-mails, to the flash drive. It began prompting at each e-mail (all 11,000 of them), saying "if you copy this, it will be without the file properties. Proceed?" Copying all the e-mails without their file properties didn't sound like a good idea, so I stopped.

Then I thought of exporting the e-mails instead of copying them. I selected Local Folders in the e-mail program, File, Export, browse for destination. But the Save As dialog that opens only opened to a subfolder of her named personal folder, not to Computer. It was impossible to navigate the Save As dialog to Computer and thence to the flash drive. What kind of Save As dialog opens to a subfolder and refuses to let you navigate up the hierarchy to where you want to get to?

Prevent Vista Mail From Deleting Old Newsgroup?

Jun 18, 2008

Today I had a need to find some questions and responses that I'd sent to and received from, some of the MS newsgroups (including this one). It seems that Vista Mail has auto-magically deleted a large number of old newsgroup messages that I had previously downloaded to my machine, so I've lost that history. I've been through all the dialog boxes I could find and I cannot find any "delete downloaded news messages after ...." option. Odder still, if I use the Mail search tool to find messages, it finds some.
If I then go back to the message viewer, that gets refreshed and the search "hits" disappear from the found items dialog. Are old messages actually being deleted from the MS servers somewhere and my local cache is then being kept up to date by deleting the old messages? So the question is, "How do I prevent Vista Mail from deleting old newsgroup messages?".

Windows Mail Settings, "non Full Screen" Mode

2. When I open a message and then hit the delete button, it takes me automatically to the next message, I want it to go back to the message list. I know in outlook where you can set these settings but can't find it with Windows mail.

Windows 7 Newsgroup - Available?

Dec 10, 2009

I have tried to find the windows 7 Newsgroup in this list of Newsgroup where this one on Vista is, but I do not get a hit. Is there one in this group that I can add to my list and use to ask some questions?

Windows Vista has a lot of pretty and nice graphics, and pretty colors, etc, but it is very difficult to find some thing there when you are lost and the folder systems is extremely complicated sometimes. I use Vista now, have had it for about two years now, and I still have difficulty finding the logic of the folder system sometimes. I don't think that my former Windows XP was so complicated (do people agree?) Is the new Windows 7 as complicated as Vista? (I do not have Windows 7 yet).

Newsgroup info about windows 7. There is a problem with the alt.windows7.general newgroups. I don't think it is named correctly. That is why some news severs are not caring this. I think. Here is my new server response. the idea is that there's discussion in alt.config, a proper newsgroup charter is written, there's agreement on the actual name (alt.config discussed alt.os.windows-7 last week), and someone sends a control message. This is necessary to ensure adequate interest and agreement.

Windows 7 Memory And Why No Windows7 Newsgroup In Microsoft Communities?

Oct 22, 2009

I'm trying to do the in-place upgrade - Vista Home Premium to W7 Home Premium. It says: "The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue. There is not enough free space to store temporary Windows installation files. Try using Disk Cleanup, uninstall old programs, or move files to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive." I just installed a new 320 gb hard drive and restored Vista on it. It works perfectly. 220 drive C: and about 80 gb D: so there should be no problem I checked each drive's properties to make sure each had much unused space - I came from an 80 gb disk.
