View 6 Replies View RelatedI own a Toshiba Qosmio x300(running on Vista home premium x64) and recently my oldest laptop, HP (windows XP pro x32), died from overheating.
Lucky for me, the hdd is still alive as I have some VERY important files on it (Work related)
The problem is that I cannot retrieve them:
here's exactly what I did:
I inserted my HP's hdd into my Toshiba.
(tried booting from XP but could not start windows since it seems to crash after the loading screen with the XP logo) (Also tried booting in safe mode, but same result)
So, I booted successfully from vista.
when I try to access the "My Documents" folder of the windows XP administrator account from windows vista, it says: Access denied.
I tried also making an administrator account from vista(exact name, case sensitive and same password) hoping to achieve success but no such luck.. I tried various software unlockers but none of them worked.
I was working on my laptop earlier this evening moving a few files around and organising my folders when I lost a few files from a folder. I don't know exactly what happened, I probably mashed the touch pad. Anyway, now I can't find the files anymore. I've tried running a search but it has come to no avail. How do I find my files? If it makes any difference the files were on a memory stick.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been trying for close to a month to figure out how to get Vista to display email addresses from the 'address book' or the contacts list, in a much more efficient manner. At the moment, when I go to create an email and click the 'To' button, every single email address entered into the contacts list is displayed.I liked the way outlook express had it set up, email addresses could be entered into sub-folders so that they were in a more logical list. (family/friends/business/etc...). Now when viewing a contacts list, the sub folder are shown... but, what I would really like to be able to do is click that To button, see the address sub folders, and select the recipient from that sub folder list. The windows help and support screen can't find the info I am looking for and many attempts at trying to get the same sort of recipient selection that outlook express gave has failed with what appears to a backward step taken by 'Windows Mail'.

View 5 Replies View RelatedThe aftermath of a trojan attack (Vista Guardian) has resulted in the file association of exe files being lost and hence an inability to run exe files. I am quite convinced that the trojan is now dead, but I can't figure out how to fix the damage. If I could get into the registry I could fix it, but of course regedit is an exe file so I can't run it. I've tried tricks like running it from command line or from inside a batch file but with no joy. I have also made a copy and called it regedit.com. This looked romising as Vista asked for user permission to run the program, but then nothing. It gets killed off before it starts. I am not familiar with the particular machine, nor am I very familiar with Vista and I am now at a loss as to how to proceed.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAt first I had an apparent common problem: my user profile, which happened to be the admin profile, stopped working and would show error your user profile was not loaded correctly. You have been logged on with a temporary profile yada yada yada yada. Main problem besides the annoyance was I could obviously not find my documents. I called Dell tech support. They found all my valuable WORD documents. We then created a new folder and moved all the valuable files to it. So far so good. Now......Dell tech decides he wants to check for any MS updates. There were 14 updates needed. Downloaded and installed. Same problem with the user profile - but now the WORD documents are GONE. Nowhere. Folder everything gone after the MS updates. Plenty of free C drive space (like only 30% full) and plenty or RAM, so it should not have needed the disk space. Problem is after 4 hours the Dell tech could not recover the files. He found some *.temp files but when machine was shut down those disappeared, too.
Machine is running Vista and has been flawless for 7 months until the problem with the user profile. BTW System Restore will not work. We tried that first thing to try and fix the user profile issue. It returns the message it did not work completly once it brings the desktop back up. It did not work before the Windows update nor after the Windows update. Where did the WORD doc files go after the MS updates? Am I screwed? Any software available or ways to recover these very valuable lost files? I know I know shoulda woulda backed them up. That's fine -
I believe I've found a bug in Windows Explorer that I can reproduce reliably. If anyone can get this to a QA engineer in the Vista group at Microsoft
1. Open the Windows explorer browser (not Internet Explorer). Set it up so that you that you can see folders in the left-hand tree view panel and files in the right-hand list panel.
2. Create a new folder called "Test" and a subfolder below it called "TestSub".
3. In the SubTest folder, create three text files. Call them "Test1.txt", "Test2.txt" and "Test3.txt". Just to make the files non-empty, open them up and type a single character into each (I typed "x") and save.
4. In the left-hand tree view, click on any folder that is not in the Test -> SubTest hierarchy.
5. Again from the left-hand tree view, single click on the "TestSub" folder...........

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running Vista Ultimate x64 on a 75 gig drive (way too small). Is it possible to setup a additional 2 drives in a RAID 1 array in addition to this drive? Or do I need to do a fresh install of Vista to recongize the drive(s)?
Second, if I can do the first, without needed a fresh install, why does it crash at crcdisk.sys when I enable the SATA ROM BOOT so the RAID can be done? I'm using ASUS A8R-MVP mother board. It has the newest version of the bios already installed on it (version 6003). I've tried to update the ULi RAID drivers, but I'm not having any luck. When I use the ULi RAID tool on boot-up, it says I'm using V1.1D M5288. I grabed the ULi drivers from NVidia (ULi integrated 220 bundle) and it won't install. I used WinRar to open it up and I grabbed everything out of the SATAM5288 directory and booted from my Vista DVD and tried to load those drivers, it fails.
I had a Gateway laptop that I purchased new a few years ago, with Vista Home Premium. I really like the spell check option up top on the tool bar. I now have a brand new laptop - Gateway FX, with Vista Home Premium. But, it is no where to be found on my pc. What gives?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Office 2007 on a new Vista 64 bit system. I was unable to install my previous version of WordPerfect Office 12. When using WP on my previous Windows XP system, I was able to go into the word processor, click open, go to the wp folder (where I kept all my documents) and do a search based on a particular word I was looking for. For example, I could type in the word "hebrew" in the files box and each document file that contained that word (not only in the file name but in the contents of the file) was listed. I could then preview the contents of each document file and open the one I wanted.
Does this feature work in Word 2007 under Vista 64? I have only been able to find a file name with the word I type, even though I know many other document files contain the word I type in the files box. This has been very frustrating because it means I have to preview every file to find the one I want rather than just the files with the typed word in its contents.
A "friend" sat in front of my PC and tried to do me a favor, by running a "free" Registry fix software program. It took me a while to delete this program, but now I've discovered a problem. My Start menu now has missing items, for instance the Games category, no longer shows the games that once were there. I've looked for a restore point, prior to my "friends" intervention, but it does not exist. Is there a way to re-build the Start menu and restore it to it's previous existence?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have backup software on my computer that backs up to an off-sitelocation.I had some questions about how well it was or wasn't functioning, and I attempted to send the tech a copy of the data log as an attachment to my email to him. However, after I attach it to the email, when I try to send it I get a pop-up that says, "Some of the files could not be found, and could not be attached to the message. Would you like to send the message anyway?" What is causing this problem? As far as I can tell, I do not have the
file opened when I'm trying to send the email. (I sent the log anyway by copying it and pasting it into a Word document, and then attaching that to my email.)
When I insert the DVD, I click on 'Install Now' and the whole installation process works fine. But, right at the very end, it says 'Completing Installation'. Then, it says 'The installation was unsuccessful so the computer is reverting back to your previous version of windows'. Then my computer restarts back as Windows XP. I have made sure I have all the system requirements and have downloaded and run the upgrade advisor. I have installed the vista home premium on my laptop first and it works fine. It just doesn't seem to want to install on my desktop computer.
