I've lost all my email messages and folders. I've tried to find in windows explorer but I couldn't. In windows XP I remember the email folders had a dbx extension. But in vista I don??t find anything.

I was using Outlook (not Outlook Express) running under Windows XP on my old computer. I carefully backed up all my folders in which I keep my e-mail messages. I want to import the folders into Windows Mail running under Windows Vista on my new computer. When I try, the menu invites me to select the format I want to import e-mail from and I select Microsoft Outlook. I then get an error message saying "Messages cannot be imported from the MAPI client". Of course , this means nothing to me. Can anyone help ? Does it mean that I must go out and buy a new version of Outlook ?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm using Windows Mail that is "connected" to my Verizon account. Months ago I created subfolders to archive older emails. I diligently moved them into this folder. I also created another subfolder under the archived folder as well. I've had what I can only call "mysterious" issues where e-mails appear and them moments later, they are gone from my inbox. I thought I had the issue (simplistically) solved by diligently moving new items into the archive folder immediately.
Now (12/26/09) those subfolders are gone. They are not under any other folder in Windoes Mail. What is very odd (and there's quite a lot) is that I did find a lot of them now back in my Inbox but not all. The archived folders I created were under the Inbox folder as a subfolder. I don't think this has anything to do with views.
I have lost 2 important folders saved on my desktop while i was downloading a game from a disk. I have tried system restore but to no avail. I am at a complete loss.

I am at the moment attempting to get Microsoft help but that seems to be taking forever. 2 times previous to this I have logged into my Windows Mail and found that they have had to retrieve all my mail folders as they got "lost" somehow. Now I log in yesterday morning to check on some e-mails that I have saved in a folder titled "Job Searches" and all of the e-mails in there are there in title only but have no content. Another folder same thing basically except that every e-mail content is the same. I'm baffled.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI restored my vista OS using a system image utility provided by Alienware. It created a backup folder on the c drive with all the old files in it, including user profiles. I changed the owner of all files and folders back to my account and tried to delete it, but got the UAC messages that I need to allow administrator rights to do so. After clicking yes, I got a message that permission was denied with the only options of "Try Again" or "Cancel". After making visible all hidden files and folders, I was able to drill down to the one file I could not delete. I've used the "take ownership" steps in Vista explorer properties, and also the "takeown" dos commands, which report success that the Administrators group or my account which belongs to the administrators group, is the owner of the file, and that I have full control of it. Even so, I cannot delete this file. In DOS, I get access denied. In Explorer, I get the "you need permission to perform this action" message, with "try again" or "cancel", and it shows that my account (or administrators group, doing it that way) is the owner. It's just this one file. I was able to delete all other files and folders around this file, but just not this one.
I wonder if the folder path is so long or so nested that UAC fails to figure it out? It was in users\appdata
oamingetc. Or is the file corrupt? The file is a tempory file created by one of those biometric devices when logged on with your fingerprint, and is supposed to disappear when you log off, but it seems to have remained there because of a hard boot. Is there a utility I can use that can nuke this one lone file?
I have been trying for close to a month to figure out how to get Vista to display email addresses from the 'address book' or the contacts list, in a much more efficient manner. At the moment, when I go to create an email and click the 'To' button, every single email address entered into the contacts list is displayed.I liked the way outlook express had it set up, email addresses could be entered into sub-folders so that they were in a more logical list. (family/friends/business/etc...). Now when viewing a contacts list, the sub folder are shown... but, what I would really like to be able to do is click that To button, see the address sub folders, and select the recipient from that sub folder list.The windows help and support screen can't find the info I am looking for and many attempts at trying to get the same sort of recipient selection that outlook express gave has failed with what appears to a backward step taken by 'Windows Mail'.

I don't know exactly what happened, I probably mashed the touch pad. Anyway, now I can't find the files anymore. I've tried running a search but it has come to no avail. How do I find my files? View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a couple of problems with Vista Windows Mail. In some of my email folders (about 5), I have realised that ALL emails have now taken on the same message body. It is like Windows Mail has overwritten all messages with one random email that existed in the folder. The Subjects, timestamps, addresses are normal/individual, but every email has the same body/message. They used to be individual emails in these folders, but now it is the same email over and over again.-
Some emails give me the following message when I click on them: It is happening to ALL emails in 1 or two folders. Message could not be displayed - Windows Mail encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this message. Check your computer for low memory or low disk space and try again. I hope someone has encountered this problem & knows how to fix it. I have emails dating to 1999 & wouldn't want to lose them because of Windows Mail.
I have two versions of Eudora on my PC but only one (Eudora 8 beta) is recognized in file folders that contain *.jpg files (as of today).
Before today, I would highlight a JPG and click on Email at the top of the open folder. Eudora 7.1 would come up and all I had to do was put in an email address. I should say that I use Eudora 7.1 with two sets of data - one for me and one for my wife.
However, my wife's version would come up which is what I want. As of today, Eudora 8 beta comes up when I click on Email. I have no idea how the association changed.
I also don't know why my wife's version of Eudora 7.1 used to come up instead of mine.
There must be a way to reset the association. I tried resetting the association in Internet Explorer - but only Eudora 8 beta is available as a choice. That's another problem. Why isn't Eudora 7.1 a choice in file associations in Internet Explorer 8?
Our Server upgraded from SBS 2003 to Win Server 08 & Exchange 07 last year. This email server is domain controller and we have one more file server which is windows server 03 joins in the domain. After upgraded the server, all of the User PC & email server cannot access or see share folders of another PC & email server each other except the email server can be able to access some windows vista PC. But all of the PC & servers (include email & filer server) can access file server share folders. Could you tell me which setting in server is wrong that cause this problem?
View 8 Replies View RelatedEmails are sent and arrive in my Windows Mailbox fine. I then create a folder and drag them to that folder no problems. When I create a subfolder however, and start dragging emails into the subfolder I find that the 1st email is fine but every subsequent one has been corrupted. That is to say that in each case the email content is erased and replaced with a duplication of the 1st email in that subfolder. Go figure. The email titles don't change so if you open the subfolder you
wouldn't realise what has happened.
It is only when you open each successive email that it becomes apparent that the content of every email has become identical. *Windows Mail folders: 1 email duplicates itself over all others in a folder, thereby erasing email content of all others* This was previously posted by two others and I have exactly the same problem.
My wife's motherboard just crapped out and I need to retrieve her emails and address book from Windows Mail. This urgent as she uses the computer for her business and it has literally several thousand email addresses, email groups, and messages. The OS is Vista Home Premium. Where within the file structure on her hard drive would I find those folders/files? Which folders/files am I specifically looking for?

Well, my computer crashed out and I had to get a new hard drive. I tried to follow the instructions from the previously solved thread, but I can not find the "desktop.ini". i tried to delete them (right click > delete). but when i restart my computer the folders are there again: how can i get vista to stop renewing those damn folders.
I have recently encountered a situation where sent messages randomly are not put into the Sent Items folder of Windows Mail even though that option is checked in my Options settings. This problem never occurred until about two days ago. I have unchecked and rechecked this option and rebooted the PC, but no resolution.
As I said it occurs randomly, but more often than not. For example, I can send several test messages to the same receipient that correctly get put into the Sent Items folder, and then without changing any settings whatsoever one to the same receipient does not get placed there.
