My PC crashed, forcing a reload. I had stored some files in an encrypted folder on a separate partition. Like a bonehead, I didn't save the keys before the crash. Is there anyway I can get to the file contents?

I opened the folder and there was a log of everything I have done for at least 2 weeks. So I emptied the folder. What a mistake! I have lost pictures that I have downloaded within the last month. I have a complete backup on an external drive using Vista Backup & Restore (keeping my fingers crossed it is a good one) but it is from several months ago so I decided to have the tech that was checking out my computer do a backup before reinstall. Unfortunately, he couldn't backup everything and I am missing quite a bit of stuff. I have no idea how the complete restore would work. Am I able to select certain data to restore? Does it restore things back to their original location?

im a gamer and i have pinnacle studio,which is game recording software. Soo i made a project with a bunch of videos put together and i like a rookie i deleted all the videos because my project was done. afterward when i played the video on pinnacle a big question mark came up and the video didnt show up. so i recovered the videos from the recycle bin and then the videos were still unavailble.only shorcuts for the videos are available for the videos but they dont open up.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy son has managed to break Vista by trying to change the SID and rendering all the user accounts except a guest account account unusable. After many hours of searching i seem to find that the only solution is to reinstall Vista. I cannot log into any dministrator account to gain access to or take possession of the files from the inaccessible accounts that are still on the hard drive but i don't want to lose them as a result of einstalling. I have come up with a plan but have now idea if it will work. If i re-size and move the partition with the busted OS on and reinstall vista on the new partition i will create, will i be able to access the moved partition, take ownership of the files on it from my shiny new administrators account and copy them to the new partition. If anyone has a clue whether this will work please tell me or if there is another solution, i really don't want to lose the photos i hadn't yet managed to back up.

Since the old computer had an ATA drive I couldn't just move the old hard drive to the new SATA system so I have bought an external hard drive kit to connect the old drive to the new system via a USB 2.0 port. My problems is that I can no longer access some encrypted files on the old hard drive.

I don't know exactly what happened, I probably mashed the touch pad. Anyway, now I can't find the files anymore. I've tried running a search but it has come to no avail. How do I find my files? View 9 Replies View RelatedThe aftermath of a trojan attack (Vista Guardian) has resulted in the file association of exe files being lost and hence an inability to run exe files. I am quite convinced that the trojan is now dead, but I can't figure out how to fix the damage. If I could get into the registry I could fix it, but of course regedit is an exe file so I can't run it. I've tried tricks like running it from command line or from inside a batch file but with no joy. I have also made a copy and called it regedit.com. This looked romising as Vista asked for user permission to run the program, but then nothing. It gets killed off before it starts. I am not familiar with the particular machine, nor am I very familiar with Vista and I am now at a loss as to how to proceed.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAt first I had an apparent common problem: my user profile, which happened to be the admin profile, stopped working and would show error your user profile was not loaded correctly. You have been logged on with a temporary profile yada yada yada yada. Main problem besides the annoyance was I could obviously not find my documents. I called Dell tech support. They found all my valuable WORD documents. We then created a new folder and moved all the valuable files to it. So far so good. Now......Dell tech decides he wants to check for any MS updates. There were 14 updates needed. Downloaded and installed. Same problem with the user profile - but now the WORD documents are GONE. Nowhere. Folder everything gone after the MS updates. Plenty of free C drive space (like only 30% full) and plenty or RAM, so it should not have needed the disk space. Problem is after 4 hours the Dell tech could not recover the files. He found some *.temp files but when machine was shut down those disappeared, too.
Machine is running Vista and has been flawless for 7 months until the problem with the user profile. BTW System Restore will not work. We tried that first thing to try and fix the user profile issue. It returns the message it did not work completly once it brings the desktop back up. It did not work before the Windows update nor after the Windows update. Where did the WORD doc files go after the MS updates? Am I screwed? Any software available or ways to recover these very valuable lost files? I know I know shoulda woulda backed them up. 1. Open the Windows explorer browser (not Internet Explorer). Set it up so that you that you can see folders in the left-hand tree view panel and files in the right-hand list panel.
2. Create a new folder called "Test" and a subfolder below it called "TestSub".
3. In the SubTest folder, create three text files. Call them "Test1.txt", "Test2.txt" and "Test3.txt". Just to make the files non-empty, open them up and type a single character into each (I typed "x") and save.
4. In the left-hand tree view, click on any folder that is not in the Test -> SubTest hierarchy.
5. Again from the left-hand tree view, single click on the "TestSub" folder...........
i was copying some file and folders to my other hard drive and by mistake I deleted all my documents!!!, and now i do not have any thing in my document folder. I restored my system but i didn't get them back.

For those people in positions where privacy can mean the life or death of a career or even a person, listen up. "Computer scientists have discovered a novel way to bypass the encryption used in programs like Microsoft's BitLocker and Apple's FileVault and then view the contents of supposedly secure files.
In a paper (PDF) published Thursday that could prompt a rethinking of how to protect sensitive data, the researchers describe how they can extract the contents of a computer's memory and discover the secret encryption key used to scramble files. (I tested these claims by giving them a MacBook with FileVault; here's a slideshow.)
"There seems to be no easy remedy for these vulnerabilities," the researchers say. "Simple software changes are likely to be ineffective; hardware changes are possible but will require time and expense; and today's Trusted Computing technologies appear to be of little help because they cannot protect keys that are already in memory. The risk seems highest for laptops, which are often taken out in public in states that are vulnerable to our attacks. These risks imply that disk encryption on laptops may do less good than widely believed.

I see no BitLocker options under Control Panel, Scenario 5: Turning off BitLocker Drive Encryption Scenario 5 describes how to turn off BitLocker Drive Encryption and decrypt the volume. The procedure is the same for all BitLocker Drive Encryption configurations on TPM-equipped computers and computers without a compatible TPM. When you turn off BitLocker, you can choose to either disable BitLocker temporarily, or to decrypt the drive. Disabling BitLocker allows TPM changes and operating system upgrades. Decrypting the drive means that the volume will once again be readable, and that all the keys are discarded. Once a volume is decrypted, you must generate new keys by going through the encryption process again.
Before you start You must be logged on as an administrator. The drive must be encrypted. To turn off BitLocker Drive Encryption Click Start, click Control Panel, click Security, and then clickBitLocker Drive Encryption. From the BitLocker Drive Encryption screen, find the volume on which you want BitLocker Drive Encryption turned off, and click Turn Off BitLocker Drive Encryption. From the What level of decryption do you wantdialog box, click either Disable BitLocker Drive Encryption or Decrypt the volume as needed. By completing this procedure, you have decrypted the operating system volume.
Windows Vista includes a new hard drive encryption feature called BitLocker Drive Encryption. BitLocker can be a very useful security feature for businesses and home users that have sensitive and confidential information stored on their computer. Unfortunately, BitLocker Drive Encryption by default requires a Trusted Platform Module (TPM Chip) version 1.2 or later installed in your computer. A lot of the computers and laptops on the market do not come with TPM chips installed since they are typically only found in premium model business computers. If you have Windows Vista Business, Ultimate or Enterprise but do not have a TPM chip, you can still use BitLocker Drive Encryption.
Hidden away in local group policy is a setting that will allow you to turn on the ability to use a USB storage device instead of a TPM key to store the encryption key. This is a great feature for users that don't have the latest high-end hardware because you can still use hard drive encryption. However, every time you turn on your computer, the USB storage device that has the encryption key located on it must be plugged in. Without it, your computer will not boot up. One BitLocker Drive Encryption is setup with a USB storage device, that USB storage device basically becomes the key to your computer.
Follow these steps to turn on the ability to use a USB storage device with BitLocker Drive Encryption on hardware that does not have a TPM device:
Click on the Start Button and key in gpedit.msc and hit Enter....
Only couple of months I have been using Windows Vista, In the last two days some files with file extensions xlsx, wav and mp3 have been deleted without any hint. I did not deleted these files. I am at a loss why this has happened.

have gone mental.
They replace shortcuts and after a reboot the non-working/"bad" keys change so its a different set of letters.
Sometimes F will open find computer while other times it wont,and sometimes L will lock the pc while other times it wont.
Ive unistalled,reinstalled,updated the drivers.Restored the system to two days ago.
Check all language settings.
As I am working on the computer (Sony VAIO Laptop)(Windows Vista Home Edition), I hit the arrow key several times. Doesn't really matter which one, the result is the same. Just for argument sake, lets say I hit the left arrow key several times. The computer will act as if the key is stuck, and will scroll to the left. Using the up and down arrow keys, I can go up or down with out a problem. When I hit the right arrow button, I don't go to the right. The only way I can "unstick" the left arrow button is to hit again.
This issue happens with all the arrow keys, so I figure that perhaps it is a preference somewhere in Vista. I thought it might be the stickys, but I checked and they are off.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running windows Vista 32 bit, and everything was working great until I uninstalled Norton 360. Following uninstall, my DVD drive no longer worked (I corrected that issue) and my network no longer works. I am wired into a router, and also wireless on the same computer. Bother worked well, until the uninstall. Now, I can't even see the router, even though I'm wired to it. The wireless connection successfully connects to the router (or so it seems), but also cannot see the router.I suspect there is a registry error (or key corruption), but cannot find which keys are corrupt.Has anyone ever had this problem? Again, I corrected the DVD issue, but cannot identify the network issue.
