I had a problem with an older Windows XP Pro machine. I now have a Windows Vista Premier x64 machine. Since the old computer had an ATA drive I couldn't just move the old hard drive to the new SATA system so I have bought an external hard drive kit to connect the old drive to the new system via a USB 2.0 port. My problems is that I can no longer access some encrypted files on the old hard drive.
View 5 RepliesI encrypted lots of my files on my computer, Before it died on me. If I would of known that It was going to die, I would of decrypted asap, but thats not the case. I still have the HD from my old computer(it hasn't been reformatted) I have it installed on my new computer, as a D: drive. Iv tried to move my encrypted folders from my old HD to into my new. but I'm not seeing them pop up, I see the names of the folder when there copied. but when I click on them. nothing. So Iv used a EFS recovery program on my old HD.
Iv got the files but when I decrypted them they came out blurred or gray screened. so that didn't work. I came across a EASEUS data recovery wizard. I was able to recover my encrypted files, but I cant take ownership to decrypted them. error mesg :you will need to provide administrator permission to change these attributes:comes up. I've tried to right click, properties owner tab, advance. I put down myself as full owner for everything but still nothing. Is it impossible to decrypt my files?
I'm trying to access a network folder share with my notebook. The share contains EFS encrpyted files and is located on a PC that runs Vista Ultimate. My notebook runs Vista Entreprise. I can see the files and its sizes, but I cannot copy them to my notebook or open them directly from the share without getting an "access denied" error. I installed the PC's encryption certificate on my notebook (as documented in Vista's help) but keep getting the "access denied" error. I have no issues with copying or opening files on the network share that are not encrypted. The error message only appears when trying to copy/open encrypted files.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Vista Ultimate operating system. I have two partitions: C and D. In C I have my windows and in D i had my documents. Last times the computer booted from the hard disk I had to repair my Vista to let me enter in the windows. Because of that I formatted my C partition, by deleting it and creating it again. And when I logged in my fresh Windows surprize. All the info in the old C partition was now in my D, and the old D is missing. Those were my documents! Is it possible for me to recover the data in the old D drive? I really need those. Can you recommend me a software program that can recover that data? I don't mind the price of the licence, as far as it works with great results.

im a gamer and i have pinnacle studio,which is game recording software. Soo i made a project with a bunch of videos put together and i like a rookie i deleted all the videos because my project was done. afterward when i played the video on pinnacle a big question mark came up and the video didnt show up. so i recovered the videos from the recycle bin and then the videos were still unavailble.only shorcuts for the videos are available for the videos but they dont open up.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy son has managed to break Vista by trying to change the SID and rendering all the user accounts except a guest account account unusable. After many hours of searching i seem to find that the only solution is to reinstall Vista. I cannot log into any dministrator account to gain access to or take possession of the files from the inaccessible accounts that are still on the hard drive but i don't want to lose them as a result of einstalling. I have come up with a plan but have now idea if it will work. If i re-size and move the partition with the busted OS on and reinstall vista on the new partition i will create, will i be able to access the moved partition, take ownership of the files on it from my shiny new administrators account and copy them to the new partition. If anyone has a clue whether this will work please tell me or if there is another solution, i really don't want to lose the photos i hadn't yet managed to back up.

My pc didn't come with any disks and it came from best buy what ass's you are gateway but i love the pc. The reason i ask is because i want to thoroughly clean my pc and hard drive with the destructive option. to give it that 100% no virus can possibly be on my pc result. i have tried that recovery with disk option before on other pc's and the virus managed to stay some how. My brother taught me that the best way to clean pc's are to,
1. take memory sticks and battery out of pc.
2. turn it on it gives like a flush to the memory stick.
3. put memory and battery back.
4. Turn on put OS (not recovery) disk in and and proceed to install
5. when at hard drive cleaning option choose destructive (yes i know it eliminates the D: drive partition) and proceed for a fresh OS.......
My PC crashed, forcing a reload. I had stored some files in an encrypted folder on a separate partition. Like a bonehead, I didn't save the keys before the crash. Is there anyway I can get to the file contents?

I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)
Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.

i have a folder on a second drive with some files that i encrypted in Vista Ultimate (no password, just EFS), about a week ago i upgraded to windows 7, a clean install on the primary drive. i went to look at the files and i cant see them on the second drive. is there anyway i can get these files back?

View 9 Replies View RelatedRight now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
i have all these temp files in the temp folder and they keep appearing and multiplying. The first time i found them the folder was near 8gb and i deleted all of them no problem. Now they are back again and it's getting close to 4gb but i can't delete them this time.
I couldn't find anything on google. The only two things that came up was something to do with some Offline Explorer Pro program and the other one was that some guys hard drive was failing. One of my drive did recently fail on me but it's not in the computer anymore.
I have enabled hidden files and protected System files in Explorer. There's about 5GB difference between the listed files and folders and the space used in drive properties. Does Vista REALLY hide things like the hibernation file? (Cos I can't see one on the C drive - pagefile is there but no hibernation file)

I can access the files on the XP PC from the Vista PC, and I can access the files on the second drive (D: Drive) on the Vista PC from the XP{ PC. BUT I cannot access the files on the C: Drive of the Vista PC from the XP PC. When I look into the properties dialogue box for each drive on the Vista PC I see differences in the security options, where on the D: Drive I get "Everybody" as the Group/user name but for the C: Drive I get "Authenticated users".

first time I did it, it said "backup failed" (I didn't look at why, just gave
up) and since then, every week when it does its sad little attempt to back
up, it says "last backup failed".
I finally decided to give it another crack tonight, but when I looked at the
D drive, it said that I only had 1.28GB free of just over 5GB. I looked in
the file to see if there was anything I could get rid of so I could start
from scratch, but apparently there's nothing in there apart from the little
RECOVERY file (87kb) which it says I shouldn't touch, so I'm not going to!

I have all of my personal folders on the D drive. Following a reinstall of Vista64 I again pointed the location of my personal folders back to the D drive (where the folders remained). I was able to take care of all of them except the Downloads folder which does not have a location tab. I am sure it was there on previous installs. What can I do?

I've tried everything and a couple of new little programs that are supposed to give me "ownership". Nothing will work for me. Right now I'm trying to move my Audible Books from old to new drive and cannot. I can't even delete them! I've turned UAC off and no change. Vista has me stumped.

I just got a lap top, with Vista installed, and for some reason I am unable to see swf files that I save. They *are* there, because if I try to re-save the same file to the same folder, I get the file already exists message.
I never had this problem with XP, so I'm thinking it's something about Vista settings. I've already tried enabling show invisible files and checking "read only" in folder options.
I have a train collection and have a program called TrainTracker that I use to keep track of the pieces in my collection. I have the program on my home PC, which runs Widows XP, but when I bought my laptop about a year ago with Windows Vista Home Premium, I copied the program from my PC (Windws XP) onto a jump drive and pasted it onto my laptop (Vista). Everything was going according to plan.
Now I take my laptop where my trains are and I add a bunch of pieces and I want to copy the file from my laptop (Windows Vista) onto a jump drive, so I can then paste it onto my PC (Windows XP) and have the updated TrainTracker, with all the additions I've made. Well, when I copy it from Vista onto a jumpdrive, all it will copy is the original program which I transferred from my PC onto my laptop. It won't copy the new items I've added onto the program.
My son has done some college work at home and saved it directly to a brand new 4GB FAT32 USB flash drive, which he Ejected before removal. Now he is at college, and can't open the files. The directory structure is visible, but when he tries to open a file (for example a PNG), Windows reports the file is corrupted. He has emailed on of the files to me, and I get the same result. All the utilities I can find seem to focus on lost or deleted files, not corrupted ones.
View 4 Replies View Relatedthis is driving me crazy! I have now experienced this 3-4 times. It happens all of a sudden, and is scary. Some or most of my data suddenly disappears from my user folder (C:/users/username). First time it happened immediately after I installed Spyware Doctor, back in April, when they first released the x64 version. I have since restored all the data, and uninstalled Spyware Doctor. However, it happened again. The last two times, it just happened. I simply noticed that I had much more free space on my C drive (40GB more than the day before).
Last weekend, it mostly affected my photos, but other folders were missing also. I am running x64, on a HP machine with 6GB RAM. Luckaly, I perform multiple backups (TrueImage and Ghost), as well as Mozy. In each case I was able to restore all data, but it takes time, and more importantly, I don't trust my computer. I live in a fear - will my data be there tomorrow??? Or, has anyone else experienced anything similar?
when booting up from a vista cd I accidentally had my usb external hard drive plugged in and the drive has been emptied and replaced by windows there are sintimental photos etc on the drive can anyone help me to restore them
View 9 Replies View Relatedi just bought My Book Essential 1 TB today... and when i got home i plug it and it works just fine but its bothering me that the HDD type is FAT32 .. so i format it and try to change it to NTFS.. but somethings happen and boom the electric in my apartment was down... and so when the electric back i want to format it again but i can't... there drive is detected but with no space detail... it says "Windows can't format Drive H: - Check to see that the disk and drive are connected properly, make sure that the disk is not read-only, and then try again.
For more information, search Help for read-only files and how to change them" when i open the Disk Management from (My COmputer > Manage) it seems it's already a volume.. but the weird thing there is no space detail.. and i cant erase the volume ... i've tried using diskpart but i can't do nothing because there is no volume and i can't erase the disk... no luck with fsutil cause its not ntfs... I havent tried 3rd party software and i havent tried it on other computer (don't have other computer right now) and WDC didnt give live cd for formatting because all of them was in the drive... though i already redownload it but the program is useless..
i was copying some file and folders to my other hard drive and by mistake I deleted all my documents!!!, and now i do not have any thing in my document folder. I restored my system but i didn't get them back.
