Desktop with Vista Home Premium 32-bit, 3MB RAM, dual HDs-RAID 1. Laptop with Vista Ultimate 64-bit, 4MB RAM. dual HDs, no RAID. LAN is based on Dlink DIR-655 giga-switch and draft-N wireless router. Both PCs have giga NICs. I treat the desktop as "Home Base." When I travel, I copy (manual drag-and-drop) my personal data to the laptop across the network. If I make changes while on the road, I copy teh data back to the desktop. I keep my personal data lots of folders in the Public Folder on each PC.
No problems until now, I have much more data on the desktop. One folder is 66GB. Within that folder I have sub folders of 16GB and 28GB. 65GB folder will not copy to the laptop. Copy message says "calculating" then disappears and nothing has been copied. I cannot copy the 16GB folder to another folder on the same HD. Why not? Is there an upper limit on size of folders/files that can be copied?
My windows folder takes 15.1GB of my 32GB on my C drive and the Winsxs folder inside it takes up 9.8GB, is that normal? My laptop has very few applications I installed and only one is over 1GB and its a bit torrent full of music(2.4GB) so does it really take such a massive supply of memory just to run it?
I have lots of folders of digital photos. I like them to open up with the folders and photos already on "Extra Large" so I can see what's what. Somehow I changed something when I was trying to optimize performance, and now every time I open a folder all the jpegs or folders that are inside it are the smallest size. I know I can just go up to Views and change it, but I don't want to have to do that every time. Is there some setting I can return to how it used to be so that folders and images are automatically on the largest size? I think there must be because that's how it used to be.
I have a user whose PC crashed. The hard drive was corrupted but I was able to salvage most of the data including the Windows XP Profile. On Vista, when I try to copy default.nk2 to the MicrosoftOutlook folder in Application Data, I'm denied access even though I have an administrator account. This makes it kind'a tough to support my users who've moved to Vista for various and sundry reasons. I can import the .PST files but I can't restore the .NK2 files. This doesn't make a heckuva lotta sense to me.
My harddrive had to be replaced. The Geek Squad did it. I paid $99. for them to copy all my data. The disk they gave me contains all my Internet favorites. When I click on them they say they are invalid. Any way to get these to work? Also they copied my Windows mail contacts... how do I get these into the mail program. What a job this is, getting things back to normal.
I am trying to copy files from my usb hard drive: K: to my network external drive Z: I am trying to copy everything from one to another (files in folders and files that are not in folders)
I tried selecting all and then send to Z:, but it took about six hours to copy about 20 gig (I have about 180 gig to copy)
I read some where that robocopy is a faster and better way to copy files. The thing is I do not know what syntax to use. I was wondering if someone could tell me the syntax I should use to copy EVERYTHING from the usb driveK: to the network drive Z:
My old Windows XP PC died months ago (motherboard problems) and so I took out the hard drive (which still functions fine) and put it in my new PC, but I can't seem to copy any of my files in the My Documents folder from the old drive to my newer larger drive. I've had this drive in here for the last several months and have had no problems writing other files to this 'older' drive (250 gig Maxtor 16mb cache, 7,200RPM drive (btw it's only a year old), but when I try to copy files to another drive I get the following error message: "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this file." This only happens with files that are in the My Documents folder. My current login has administrator rights, so I'm thinking some how this has something to do with this drive being from a different computer's installation of XP.
Awhile back I was given instructions on how to change the folder standard green folders to new pink folders. Well, my computer crashed out and I had to get a new hard drive. I tried to follow the instructions from the previously solved thread, but I can not find the "desktop.ini". When I go to the users folder inside my choices are Administrator and Public and I can not find the "desktop.ini" file. I have windows vista.
All of a sudden the display on my computer got HUGE. i read the other discussions and used the screen resoulution to adjust it. It is small now but it apperars blurry or something.
how do i restore dpi to default from large?.my problem is that on large dpi the screen is too big to click on the bottom of the page to activate restore.
I am unable to receive any mail that contains more than one picture. I have tried deleting all of my anti-virus and anti-spyware to rule that out. I have heard that Vista and Windows Mail do not have email limits. I am using the same incoming and outgoing mail servers that I was using with Outlook without any problems. I would appreciate any help. I am not very computer savvy.
I have a 13Gb image backup which I would like to copy to DVD. Is there a utility which will split this file (and recombine it) into DVD size chunks which I can then copy to disk? Or a DVD burning utility which will do this automatically?
I use Acronis True Image to create an image of my C: partition. If the backup is important, I then burn this image file to a DVD. Unfortunately, the image file is now too large to fit on a single DVD. Does Windows Vista have a way to split files that could be burned to separate DVDs and later re-assembled if needed? I checked my Nero manual and it does not seem to offer the capability to span multiple CD/DVDs.
I tried the backup & end up with 52 or 31 GB file to store, which is too large for CD/DVD or partitions on my HD. As an OAP external drive is expensive. Is this backup only for Companies?
Everything on my screen including the screen saver and the explorer display has become too large for some reason. How do I get it back to normal please ?
I have the exact problem as another member. I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit on a 15 inch Toshiba laptop my first computer ever. I changed the DPI screen resolution to the largest print since it was orginally too small to see and now cannot access the bottom of that screen to make any changes to reset it back small again. This enlargement of the screen also occurs on many of the control panel screens and all websites I visit. Spent hours trying everything possible all kinds of ways to fix this and very frustrated. Tried to enter through Classic Control Panel and Ease of Use suggestion to change it but no luck. Will read up on that safe mode idea. My 20 something computer neighbor was also baffled and tried to reboot but was unable to do this either hoping to reset it all back to the factory settings.
After reinstalling Vista, I noticed that the taskbar icons were no longer displayed as large icons. I believe there used to be an option available to display large icons. I haven't been able to figure out how to make the icons and buttons on the taskbar larger.
FYI, I am running Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2, with all Microsoft updates applied.
I have a need to send a large attachment to a colleague. What is the largest attachment size that Windows Mail can handle? Is it possible to send it in smaller parts which are combined at the other end?
I'm trying to back up a large program to several discs. In XP this was not a problem. It prompted you for the next disc. However in Vista (I have the Home Edition,) I'm told the disc is too small and to either "retry" or "cancel." I can't believe it doesn't do what XP did...I've already saved the program to a removable hard drive but I'd like to back it up to disc anyway. Am I missing something in the control panel? A setting of some kind? Or doest Vista just NOT do that?
I scanned a newspaper article and attached it to an e-mail. The text was so large only half the article could be read. How do I shrink text size on a sent e-mail attachment?
i have two folders in my startup menue that i want to delete:
Autostart
Verwaltung
i tried to delete them (right click > delete). but when i restart my computer the folders are there again: how can i get vista to stop renewing those damn folders.
I came into the office this morning to find my computer (Toshiba Portege, M700) in a state that seemed to be hung up in the midst of a windows update reboot. So I waited for a while, and nothing happened. The last normal reboot seems to have taken place sometime prior to about 3am Central time Sunday morning, when a Windows update was done (so it seems from Event Viewer). After that time, there are a large number of DCOM errors - things like WSearch failing to start, etc. A half hour later, tired of waiting, I decided to hard reset. Once I did that, the machine has yet to come up to a running state outside of safe mode. Among the things (I didn't catalog each and every reboot, etc.) tried were reboots into normal mode with just about every non-essential piece of software disabled, uninstallation of Sophos antivirus and Adobe Acrobat Pro and other biggies, etc. Never did I get a "normal mode" reboot to work. I've also restored the system to several set points prior to the weekend, to no avail. I will post some event viewer text when I have the chance tomorrow, but I'm totally dead in the water. I'm posting this note just in case this happened to anyone else this weekend or at their last Windows Update.
I have a file that I tried to delete. When attempting to delete, I receive a message saying the file name is to large. I moved the file to the recycle bin and ran the free up disk space and received the same message. I also tried to rename the file...no can do.
I use Vista Home Premium full install with 4 SATA hard drives. My data drive is a WD 750-gig. Disk Management sees 698.64gb with no unallocated space. It's an active partition on a basic disk. But when I open "computer" or an explore page, it sees the smaller value.
I've found solutions for xp/2000 that involve enabling 48-bit LBA, but I haven't seen anything on Vista. I don't recall being prompted for the SATA drivers during the load (F6) but I can't promise anything because it's been awhile.
I have a problem with my windows vista (ultimate x64).It crashes in BSoD every time I try to download one or more large files at once (>=100Mb), or when I surf on many internet pages at once (e.g. when I start Opera and it opens 10 tabs simultaneously). I hope it's not due to my hardware, since it's a new computer, but I had another o/s before (XP) on the same computer, and it didn't crash.I hope you guys can save me =)
