Turned It Off The Wrong Way And Now Its Broke: "Disk Boot Failure, Please Insert Boot Disk And Press Enter"

Jul 29, 2009

The other night I was in a rush and I held down the power button until it shut off. the next day I tryed turning it on and after the MB homepage came up for 3 secs on the top left hand corner of the screen it said "Disk boot failure, please insert boot disk and press enter" so i fooled around with the priority settings a little bit and nothing worked. I then inserted the windows vista CD and it would say "Loading windows files" then the loading bar came up and it would always freeze at the same point and after about a minute a blue screen came up saying a problem occured and is shutting off the computer to prevent further damage. Iv tryed everything. could my hard drive be damaged or something? Please someone help me. I cant work with much because i cant even get into windows! :-( All i can work with is the Setup menu

Boot Slow, Check Disk At Boot

Jun 3, 2008

Vista used to boot up very quickly. Now it spends ages on the page with the "loading" bar. Is it performing some sort of CHKDSK during this time? I only have sidebar and rocket dock starting up, and it's fast again when it gets to the desktop, it's just that loading bit takes quite an ages, and it didn't used to. Virus/spyware/malware free. How do i find out if it's doing some sort of chkdsk at boot?

Disk Boot Failure "INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

May 9, 2009

I changed the Boot sequence to CD first, then HDD. Everything ran fine and vista seemingly loaded perfectly. After moving some files from my backup drive back onto my main one and installing some drivers, I was asked to restart my computer (for the drivers) so I did. Remembering that the boot sequence was still set on CD first, and since my driver CD was still in the drive, I decided to set the boot sequence back to the way I had it with XP: HDD and then CD. After doing this I quit BIOS and tried to boot, but I kept getting a message saying: DISK BOOT FAILURE. INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.

So I restarted the computer again, this time with my Vista CD in the drive, and again, the computer wouldn't boot and told me to enter a boot disk. Not knowing what to do, I went back into BIOS and changed the boot sequence back to CD first, then HD. After doing this, and restarting with the Vista CD in the drive, my computer booted up with no problems whatsoever. I tried reinstalling Vista (twice), reformatting the target hard drive, changing the boot sequence around, pretty much everything I could think of......

Disk Read Error ..

Aug 22, 2008

I built my computer about 8 months ago now, and all has been running well up until two days ago. When I went to start my computer I received a "Disk Read Error". After doing much research I managed to restore the MBR and Boot Loader, and Vista booted fine. It also ran fine for about an hour, then I shut it off and went to bed.

I go to start my machine today to find out that it will start, however when it does I see my desktop for a fraction of a second before receiving a black screen. For whatever reason, explorer refuses to stay open, and constantly keeps crashing. If I'm quick enough, I can launch my browser (it's one of my quick launch icons), however I can do nothing else on the computer really. I tried using the start bar, which will stay on top of the black screen, to no avail.

I then went to the command prompt and tried to access my HDD's to see if they may be failing, although it seems I can browse them fine. I restarted into safe mode, only to have the computer freeze when loading the basic drivers, and go no further.

Now comes the really oddball part. I stick my Vista disk in so I can run its startup check, and it takes forever to load. By forever, I mean a good 20-30 minutes of time just hanging. Even when doing operations on the disk GUI, the computer hangs. This makes no sense to me at all since nothing is loaded into memory, and it's just reading off the disk.

I checked my temperatures and nothing goes above 40C, so my processor isn't overheating like I thought it may be. Unfortunately I have no restore points to go back to (I thought Vista automatically created these every once and a while, I guess not), so I'm stuck troubleshooting what I have.

What I do not want to do is restore my computer. I have far too many programs on the system to be willing to go that far, unless I really had to.

EDIT: Some more info. I have two physical hard drives, partitioned into three logical drives. I can browse one of the drives fine (it's partitioned into two logical parts, both function fine), but if I attempt to do it to the other drive, the computer hangs. Even if I go into the console and try to access the drive, or if I try to scan the drive with my anti-virus, they all hang. I assume this drive is bad.

Would that really cause every other part of my computer to hang? I've always thought if you left the bad drive alone it wouldn't do anything to performance, but I may be finding out otherwise now.

Run Disk Clean Up, Error

Aug 19, 2008

I went to run disk clean up, and in the Windows Error Reporting section I have over 60 gigs of "data". Anyway,I thought that was wierd so I looked into it, and found out there was a bug. But I got the registry fix from this site, and that didn't change anything. Also I checked my registry editor and it looks like it is all there. How can I make sure I don't have this "bug" that deletes my OS?

Disk Read Error Use Ctrl/alt/del

Jun 27, 2009

I have a Dell XPS M1530 Laptop, running Vista Home Premium 64bit. I have support from Dell but they have been unable/unwilling to save my data in the past so I'm exploring my options before calling them. My computer threw an error and then froze so that I couldn't close any open programs or access task manager or shutdown/restart. I was forced shutdown by holding the power button. On turning the computer back on, I got a "disk read error, use ctrl/alt/del to restart" response. Using ctrl/alt/del simply causes the same error to repeat.

I can access F2 and F12, but not F8. I have tried both my Dell Vista Reinstallation CD and a Recovery CD made using the tutorial on this site (found here: Create a Recovery Disc). In both cases, I have to use F12 to get it to boot from the disk. It says "loading Windows files" and then shows the little bar with Microsoft below it. Afterwards, however, it never gets to the system recovery/repair options screen...or indeed any request for input at all. It simply shows a black screen and the CPU seems to be working at something but never does anything. Occasionally, I will hear a little blip sound. Like most folks, I'm desperately hoping to retrieve data I haven't backed up in a week or two, some of it absolutely irreplaceable! If anyone has any suggestions for getting in to backup data in any way, I'd be immensely grateful!

Low Disk Space C Error Message

Dec 1, 2008

I have Vista Home Premium running on a 320 GB hard drive. I keep getting the low disc space on C: error message, and when I click on My Computer, it says I only have 189 MB of free space on the C: drive. However, when I click on the C drive, highlight all the folders, and click Properties, it says I am using 26 GB of space next to "size on disk". I tried to solve this problem about a week ago by moving 30 gigs of music to an external hard drive, but the C drive has filled up again even though I have not added anything to the C drive. I've also tried using disk cleanup and defrag, but that hasn't worked. This seems like a pretty serious problem. What's the deal?

Disk Cleanup Wizard : Error Reporting

Mar 23, 2008

I ran the disk cleanup wizard the other night on my C drive. It scanned my C drive as normal and then came up with results to clean, one of which was for error reporting logs which wasnt ticked by default, but was apparently 99gigs worth! I thought this was pretty interesting seeing as my C drive is only 32gig big, so out of curiosity I ticked the box to cleanup the 99gig of logs, and sat back and watched. Everything seemed fine after it finished, but I rebooted to be sure and then my wallpaper went missing. I went to set the wallpaper back to what it was..... and noticed the file was missing. Then I checked the start menu, all my programs have been removed! (example, powerdvd gone, alcohol 120 gone, winzip etc all gone and nothing working, not just removed from the start menu, but also uninstalled from hdd)

Changing Boot Disk

All you usually hear is that Vista is horrible to work with but seems like people here figured it out, so thanks A year ago when i built my new computer and decided to get Vista, I went to BestBuy and they gave me what I thought i needed. Turns out it was an upgrade version of Vista Ultimate and I ended up having to use my old IDE HDD ever since. I'm wondering if there's a way to change so that Vista can load off of my SATA HDD.

Can't Boot Disk Detected!

Mar 23, 2008

Just finished building my new workstation....1x 250GB SATA drive on wich I want to install Vista Ultimate x64. 3x 500GB SATA drive wich i'd like to have running in Raid-5.
Asus P5E motherboard.

My first take was this:
1) connect all HDD's
2) Install vista on 250GB drive, leave 500GB drives alone for now.
3) Update Vista.
4) Restart, enable RAID in BIOS.
5) Ctrl+I at startup, setup RAID-5 with the 3 500GB HDD's in RAIDmanager. So far so good..... RAID manager shows RAID-5 correctly and shows that 250GB drive isnon-raid.
6) Reset, problem: no startup *"No bootbable drives found"* In BIOS, it shows all drives under boot devices, and the 250GB drive asthe first boot disk. But before the 250GB name it sais RAID also, wich I guess it shouldnot.......

"boot Disk" Or Recovery Disk

When I had XP, I had a startup problem so I rebooted with a Windows XP CD that came with the computer. It fixed it.

I'm not sure if this is called a boot or recovery disk, or both.

I was hoping to make a similar disk for my new Vista (Gateway)computer but I'm not sure how to do it. I read something about an emergency thing that takes up 3 DVDs!

If so, is there a way to reformat from the bios, as I do not have windows or dos or anything else installed and working.

Boot Order: PXE-E61 Error

Aug 27, 2009

Well, I get the PXE-E61 error on my computer every once in a while; maybe 1/5 times I start it up, and when it does happen I usually have to restart about two or three times to get it to start up correctly. I 'm not sure if it's a huge problem, but I would really like to get rid of it altogether because it is kind of annoying. Nothing else is wrong with my computer. I know changing the boot order is supposed to get rid of this, and I was given a link and a suggestion, but my options are slightly different than the ones I found in the link. I just want to be completely sure I'm doing this right. This is the link How do I resolve and PXE-E61 error message and crash?....

New Member With Question About Boot Disk Partition

Been lurking for a bit, just signed up. Built the system in my profile. I am learning Vista so will probably have lots of questions.

I originally loaded Vista 64 on a 65GB OZ SSD. Seemed to be quickly filling up without any major software load, so decided to put the OS on my 500GB drive. Put the page file on the SSD, and user folders on the 1TB data drive. I saw a couple of posts here saying that the OS will work better/faster on a smaller partition. What size partition would you recommend for Vista 64 on the 500GB drive?

How Can Make Boot Disk For Update BIOS

Mar 19, 2008

So have an intel mobo, and there is a BIOS update for it, but the windows exe that Intel provides to flash it right from inside windows doesn't work in Vista 64 Ultimate. So My other options are to create a bootable USB stick or a bootable CD. I actually don't have a USB stick I can use for this, so I want to go the CD route. Either way I don't know how I can make a bootable Vista disk that gets me to a command prompt that I can put these bios files on so then I can run the bios update. I think this BIOS update could solve some problems I'm having getting things running smoothly.
