Wont Install Due To Newer Version Of Windows Installed
Dec 9, 2009
I am trying to restore my dell computer to its original state as it has bogged down completely and i have been getting a bunch of random error messages such as error loading CTMBHA.DLL.I do not care about losing any of my data or programs, I just want it to go back to its original state. When i attempt to use the Dell OS reinstallation disc, It tells me that i have a newer version of windows XP installed, so i cannot continue with setup. How do i erase this newer version of Windows XP, so that my system is back to factory settings.

I have tried to repair/reinstall/install my Windows XP system with no luck. I asked for help in an earlier thread, and got some helpful advice, but now I have a new problem. (I'm not sure I should be starting a new thread on this; but it does seem like a separate issue to me.) About two years ago I had the Geek Squad in to rid my computer of a deeply embedded virus. The techie said something to the effect that he was going to load a newer version of XP, which I welcomed, and thought no more about it. Now, in trying to reinstall or install or whatever it is that I'm going to do, the XP disk comes up with an error message saying that I cannot install an earlier version of XP. I don't have a copy of the newer version the techie installed. My question is: is there a way to override the can't-install-older-version block and reinstall the original XP version I have on a legally-owned disk?

I have an old dell that had windows ME on it (yuck) About 3 years ago, I upgraded to XP and installed service pack 2. Since then I have set up 2 laptops, broadband and a wireless network. But the old dell in the office (the main one that the high speed modem and linksys is plugged into) needs to have the operating system re-installed again. It has reached its half life...a nuisance, a pain, unbearable, unusable! When I tried to re-install it wouldnt let me because the version on the computer is a newer version then the one on the disk.

is it ok to partition a hdd with an OEM version of windows XP home installed on it? i want to buy this oem copy of XP home(http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=949&category_id=225&manufacturer_id=0) for an existing PC, which already has another OS on it. I have to wipe the hard drive before I can install the OEM XP home, since this version was meant to be distributed with new PCs only. But after I've wiped it, and have installed XP home, I plan to partition the drive and install another OS, is that ok?

New system came with XP Home, however when I try to install an older CD of XP Professional Upgrade, it says I can't because the Pro version is older than the newer Home version. Like to avoid going out and buying a new copy of Pro. Also does a copy of windows need to be on the machine first? Or does it just need to check the windows cd?

Do I remove the old versions or can I install over top of it.Also, do I need XP SP3 for it to work or will it work on its own? Do I need any Windows Updates prior to installing?

I have a really old computer; not to sure what the system specs are like other than it being made by Tiny and having a 4 GB HDD. My mum wants to use the word processor now and then but the printer has broken and she would rather not buy another; partly because drivers may be an issue and partly becuase I have unused retail copies of Windows ME and 2000 that a couple of mates donated and can print off at my Dad's house. The issue with 98 is that I want to be using USB sticks when necessary to transfer word documents over to my Dad's computer running XP to print but 98 does not have the necessary drivers and I think it is impossible to get any; from what I understand that what 98 SE was for.

I recently changed my favicon on my self-hosted blog. But the old favicon is still showing up as the shortcut on the desktop of my laptop computer after more than a week. The address bar and tab bar are displaying the correct favicon in IE7. I am certain the problem is associated with my laptop computer because my desktop computer, which never saw the old favicon, is displaying the correct favicon as a desktop shortcut. Both computers are Dell and have IE7.

The USB ports on my friend's laptop (HP Pavilion DV6000 running XP Home) randomly stopped working about a week ago. He hasn't made any changes to the system in some time. When you plug in a USB device, it gets power, but the computer doesn't recognize it. Here's what I've tried so far:Uninstalled all USB drivers from the device manager Unchecked the "allow computer to turn off this device" option under power management Installed newest version of the nVidia cihpsetMade sure that USB is enabled in the BIOS Tried a registry fix found here http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/6...p-working.htmlUnfortunately, nothing has worked. What worries me is that I also tried using an Ubuntu live cd, and no USB devices were recognized there either. I'm thinking that this might be a hardware problem which can't be fixedI declare this problem unfixable?

I recently partitioned my hard drive using Symantec Partition Magic. I installed Vista Ultimate on a separate partition. After installing, I would reboot and the normal dual boot menu would come up every time i booted my computer. But after realizing that I didn't like vista, I deleted the partition. I did not uninstall Vista, I just deleted the partition. Than I applied the newly unallocated space to the rest of my harddrive. But now when I boot, I still get the dual boot option. It tells me to pick Vista or an "Earlier Version of Windows".

I wrk for a company that has a server with Windows 2003. There are multiple 2000 and XP users who map drives from the server. Now here is where the problem begins. 2000 has no problms at all mapping drives. XP however has an issue with one folder. No matter what letter you pick, when you map the drive you get an error message "Setup requires a different version of windows. Check to make sure you are running setup on the Windows platform for which it is intended. Error 102" First of all im not running any type of setup. Im merely mapping a drive. This error occurs regardless of what drive letter you pick. And the really weird part, is once mapped the drive will open in Explorer or any other mode EXCEPT through My Computer and double clicking on the drive. If you right click the drive and hit open or explore, both will open the drive just fine. You double click and you get the error. When you right click the drive you also get an "autoplay" feature which makes no sense being its a folder on the server.
It acts like it has lost its association. Like if a JPG file is associated with nothing it wont open, but if you tell it to open with paint then it will. Its really weird and after weeks of searching i have found not a single similar problem to this one i can relate or get help from. It just plain makes no sense. I am going to unshare and reshare the folder when everyone leaves and see if that helps, but it works fine in 2000 currently and not in XP just in my computer.

(I have XP SP3)I have been advised to install a new driver (ACPI) to cure a problem, but to remove the old version first. How does one do that? (Windows Help & Support, as usual is no help, and the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel likewise is obscure.)

When I start the computer with the New CD in the CD tray, it doesn't load it, it just goes to asking if you would like to activate windows. So how am i supposed to install the new CD?Or can I activate an un-legit copy of windows using a legit License key?

I understand that if I install an OEM version it will be a new installation (not an upgrade) and all data files and programs will be wiped clean as part of the installation (step one is formatting the hard drive). I'm okay with that, because I have files on other machines and reinstall any programs that I need My question is reference to drivers being deleted and needing to be reinstalled. I'm not as familiar on the driver issue. Does this mean that most of the peripherals I currently have under Win2000 will not work with the initial installation of XP and I'll have to seek out drivers for these items (wireless NIC, dvd-rom, cd-rw, second HD?

I just want to verify I can install windows XP Pro upgrade (student/academic version) on a new 200GB SATA drive. The sata drive will be the only HDD in the desktop PC, I will insert the XP disc and boot from it; at some time I will have to press F6 and insert a floppy with drivers for the SATA drive. And as this is a upgrade version I need to supply another version of windows; so I can put in an old Windows98 disc. Is that right or do I have to install windows 98 first then XP and if so I do I install 98 on a sata drive?
I am getting the student version of Windows cause you save like $120 dollars; but there is nothing different from a normal Windows XP pro is there? I was planning on installing Visual Studio .net and MS SQL on this computer; I will be able to do this right (I know windows XP home does not have IIS so some elements do not work in VS if on a home version; but the student version has IIS right?) Sorry if this has been answered millions of times, hope you can understand my bad english this late at night

I installed Windows Vista 64 at one point, but my wireless usb adapter didn't have any drivers for windows vista 64 so I reformatted my entire hd and reinstalled win xp home. anyway, the problem is I cannot install the new version of iTunes, openoffice, and Steam. There's probably more programs out there that I cannot install, so I really want to resolve this issue as it is very annoying. everytime I try to install any of these programs i get this message. "The installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

Does that mean 2.0 and 1.1 are seperate and I need to install both? There are a few programs I have that need .net 1.1, won't 2.0 be fine for them or do I really need to install both 1.1 and 2.0?
