Just built my first PC from scratch and need to get an OS. Finally decided on getting XP Pro, but I don't know if I need the get the Full Version (usually more expensive) or the Upgrade (which I know you can do a clean install, With nothing on the HDD can I use the 'upgrade' version to do a clean install, or would I need a 'full' version?

I understand that if I install an OEM version it will be a new installation (not an upgrade) and all data files and programs will be wiped clean as part of the installation (step one is formatting the hard drive). I'm okay with that, because I have files on other machines and reinstall any programs that I need My question is reference to drivers being deleted and needing to be reinstalled. I'm not as familiar on the driver issue. Does this mean that most of the peripherals I currently have under Win2000 will not work with the initial installation of XP and I'll have to seek out drivers for these items (wireless NIC, dvd-rom, cd-rw, second HD?

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Dell 1.4 8100 came with Windows ME. I have since added another hard drive, more Rambus memory (thanks for your kind words) and installed XP sp1 Home upgrade. Later I installed SP2 as well. I would like to do a CLEAN install of XP, but it doesn't seem to want to boot my upgrade disk or my ME disk. When I did RUN, it wouldn't let me install SP1 over SP2. Would uninstalling SP2 help?

I don't want to go with Win XP because of all the folderol involved with the registration, etc.I've reformatted and reinstalled Win98SE a couple times. Would it be better to do the old fdisk/format c: or can I get by installing Win2K Pro over the top of Win98SE?

The sata drive will be the only HDD in the desktop PC, I will insert the XP disc and boot from it; at some time I will have to press F6 and insert a floppy with drivers for the SATA drive. And as this is a upgrade version I need to supply another version of windows; so I can put in an old Windows98 disc. Is that right or do I have to install windows 98 first then XP and if so I do I install 98 on a sata drive?
I am getting the student version of Windows cause you save like $120 dollars; but there is nothing different from a normal Windows XP pro is there? I was planning on installing Visual Studio .net and MS SQL on this computer; I will be able to do this right (I know windows XP home does not have IIS so some elements do not work in VS if on a home version; but the student version has IIS right?) I have recently discovered that the version of XP-pro that I have is not "completely Legit". It appears that the person which I inherited the PC( amd 1.3gig 256ram 40gig hd ) from, installed a purchased beta version of XP pro sp-2............ The problem is that one of the recent auto up dates, self installes and restarts my machine overnight, unfortunately when I attempt to log on I get "" logon message: The system cannot log you on due to the following error:the program issued a command but the command length is incorrect . please try again or consult your system administrator. " the only way that I can can log on is to try to log on ,is in safe mode and use the last working configuration. moreover it appears this version has about 30-45 more working days of life left. Given all of the above I want to upgrade to a version of xp-home and not lose any of my programs, settings emails etc.

According to Microsoft, Windows 2000 does not qualify for an upgrade to the XP Home Edition. Windows 2000 Professional users can only upgrade to XP Professional. If the XP upgrade disk is run from inside Windows 2000, the software will report that no qualifying operating system is seen, and therefore the XP upgrade cannot be used. However, if the computer is set to boot from the XP CDROM, the install program will indicate that it sees no qualifying program for the upgrade, and asks the user to insert the install disk for 1 of several qualfying operating systems to verify ownership. Windows 2000 Professional is a qualifying system on the list, in spite of Microsoft statements that it can only be upgraded to Windows XP Professional.To upgrade from Windows 2000 to XP Home Edition, boot from the XP CDROM (by changing BIOS settings), and when asked insert your Windows 2000 install CDROM to prove ownership of an operating system eligible for an upgrade. The XP install can then proceed on any available free hard drive space. If the free space is on a hard drive already containing Windows 2000 (space created for example by programs such as Partition Magic), the XP install will automatically set up a dual-boot system. This asks you each time you turn the computer on which OS you want. This allows people to retain Windows 2000, while migrating applications and data piece by piece to Windows XP.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was using my machine without any problems and decided to upgrade media player to version 10. I then installed the latest updates from microsoft and restarted. Now everytime I try and use internet explorer or media player I get a window open up that states that the programs have encoutered a problem and that I can send an error report or dont send. if i click on the dont send option the program shuts down. I can pull the error message away from the explorer window and still use interent explorer but this isnt right. It only
seems to have started since the updates were installed.
New system came with XP Home, however when I try to install an older CD of XP Professional Upgrade, it says I can't because the Pro version is older than the newer Home version. Like to avoid going out and buying a new copy of Pro. Also does a copy of windows need to be on the machine first? Or does it just need to check the windows cd?

I don't want to use those image drive programs to transfer the old drive to the new drive. My old HDD has XP on it (activated) and I would like to format it and use it for data storage later. View 2 Replies View RelatedI am unable to reinstall my HP printer driver and accompanying software and after spending more than enough time trying to remedy the problem, I've decided to reload Windows XP either by a clean install or a reinstall per this thread. I hope to get some advice here.The details that led to the problem of being unable to install my printer drivers and my attempts to remedy the problem are very long and drawn out and may not be relevant to this post or my desired solution, so I will not go through them unless requested. Suffice it to say that I have spent a good 30 hours attempting to remedy the problem, with a good portion of that time spent with free HP Support. None of their "fixes" or any of my own attempts after lots of research have been successful.
I have installed XP several times on several different machines and thus, I'm very confident with a routine install. However, due to a special configuration on this computer, I need some advice.First: Will a reinstall per this thread potentially fix my printer problem? I know there may not be a definitive answer here, but I would just like to get some feedback.If more detail is needed on the problem, I will be happy to provide it.Second: Due to space restraints on my boot drive (18 GB SCSI drive), I moved the Documents and Settings folder to a large IDE storage drive (E:) on this machine. Will I be able to refer to the Documents and Settings folder during a clean install, so that all of the current settings will load? If not, is there a solution for getting the current settings loaded into the clean XP install?
In reinstalling Windows XP, I did a full format to erase the old programs. While reinstalling the various programs, Sun Java, it posted a screen stating that a version of this program was present in Document and settings. I thought that the full format would clear this out.but evidently it didn't.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had gotten some malware, and despite all my efforts(combofix etc.) I couldn't get rid of it, so I bit the bullet and wiped the partition and reinstalled windows XP professional clean. I have gotten malware before and done this no problem.Now after installing windows XP and installing some drivers, I noticed the computer would lag horribly, I checked task manager and it showed 100% CPU usage. I Checked the processes and it is always showing that "system" is the one doing this. Also windows XP is incredibly slow on boot up, and won't even shut down. Now, I'll state what I KNOW is not the problem.

I now have these older PC's that came preinstalled with Windows XP Home on them. I was going to keep them around to use as back-ups in the classrooms or additions for tutoring,etc. My first question is, since they were used for about 2-3 years in a lab scenario, should I do a fresh install of Windows Xp or just try to clean them up the best I can. (They all are DELL running 797mhz and 512mb RAM.)

I can't set the PC to hibernate. It's not really a big issue I know but it bugs me and I hate being stumped by such an issue. I've tried everything including looking for drivers. XP says it doesn't need a APIC driver yet it's listed under system hardware. Everything else works fine it's just this little thing that is bugging me silly.

I don't even know if it's bootable?anyways, then I tried installing from Windows itself, which I later read was something I shouldn't have done.The install was going well, then it rebooted the PC. Now, I see an option to boot the XP cd.Specifically, before, I only had options to boot Windows XP Home and go into the Windows Recovery Console.I chose the XP setup and tried to delete the C: drive, but it said I couldn't. Then, I tried to delete the D: drive, and it worked. I tried once again to delete the C: drive to no prevail. So, I thought I'd restart the PC to see if it would change.And then it happened. It didn't start up with the XP setup option nor does it boot Windows. It just loops inself to the Windows XP Home logo, restart, rinse and repeat.

I want to delete all partitions and put everything at C: and install xp on it. How am I able to this? Or do you have any of your suggestions about on how to manage the space. Last time I accidently installed xp on c, and it lagged like hell!
