Formatting A Laptop Hard Drive - Full OEM Version

Jun 23, 2005

This forum has been incredibly helpful, and now I must ask another "ignorant" question to maintain my computer loving insanity. I recently acquired a used laptop running XP Home. I use Pro for work, so I thought it wise to install Pro over the top of the the former owners' OS and thereby effectively delete his old files etc. Well, what I found was that Windows simply imported the old OS info right into the new install, leaving folders, files and programs I didn't want on the hard drive. So my question for you guys and gals is this. How do I destroy everything on my hard drive, then make the laptop (without floppy drive available), accept the reloading of my XP Pro CD? It is a full OEM version by the way. If I can format the HD, and have BIOS boot from CD-ROM, will I have a "fresh" CD-only install at that point, or will there still be little goblins of information running around in my system

Power Failure - Copying Files - Full Version

May 17, 2010

The power failed during the "copying files" stage. Now when I try to reinstall it it says that "Setup cannot find a previous version of Windows installled on your computer." Then it wants me to insert a full version of xp in the cd-rom drive.
After I did this, it says that it cannot read the cd, or that its invalid, I tried it on another cd (same os and everything except its service pack 1) and then it says the same thing.

Whats The Difference Between Upgrade And Full Install

Aug 23, 2005

Can I do a full install over the top of the old code without having to delete partitions and reformat and all that good stuff? What I'm confused about is the word 'upgrade' install option. Sounds nearly worthless to me, because I bought the full XP Pro SP2 package CD. I just want to overwrite the entire os without doing a format at this time. I know it's best to re-partition and format, start from nothing, but my problems are not that bad, and I think a full install will fix them, where as the upgrade install seems to not cure the problems I'm having.

Problems being it's much slower executing programs than it used to be, even the display properties applet tends to hang sometimes. These problems are intermittent, and they tend to get much worse as the day wears on. I reboot once daily, the machine runs 24/7. If I don't reboot daily, the os becomes unstable and unbelievable things start to happen. Don't you just love it when MS say's (again) that THIS version of Windows will allow you to kill off a hung application task, when in fact it can't if the application crashes just right.

Open Folders Full Of Pictures - Attempted To Install Adobe Acrobat

Jul 22, 2007

I installed Adobe Acrobat about 2-3 weeks ago as part of a CreativeSuite package. I have yet to use it. However, just last night, when I tried to open a folder full of pictures on my desktop, for some reason, it attempted to install Adobe Acrobat. I cancelled the installation (acrobat was already installed) and the folder opened. I've tried some experiments now and it seems like every time I try to open a REGULAR FOLDER or a COMPRESSED FOLDER (ARCHIVE) ... ON MY DESKTOP ONLY, my computer attempts to install adobe acrobat. When I hit cancel the folder finally opens. I haven't waited to see what would happen if I let the computer install it cause I just spent hours cleaning my hard drive so my windows installation is sparkling and I don't want to mess that up w/ 2 copies of acrobat.

Installing OEM Version: Impacts Of Clean OEM Home Install?

Jul 13, 2005

I understand that if I install an OEM version it will be a new installation (not an upgrade) and all data files and programs will be wiped clean as part of the installation (step one is formatting the hard drive). I'm okay with that, because I have files on other machines and reinstall any programs that I need My question is reference to drivers being deleted and needing to be reinstalled. I'm not as familiar on the driver issue. Does this mean that most of the peripherals I currently have under Win2000 will not work with the initial installation of XP and I'll have to seek out drivers for these items (wireless NIC, dvd-rom, cd-rw, second HD?

Can Install Pro Upgrade (student / Academic Version) On SATA

Jan 6, 2006

I just want to verify I can install windows XP Pro upgrade (student/academic version) on a new 200GB SATA drive. The sata drive will be the only HDD in the desktop PC, I will insert the XP disc and boot from it; at some time I will have to press F6 and insert a floppy with drivers for the SATA drive. And as this is a upgrade version I need to supply another version of windows; so I can put in an old Windows98 disc. Is that right or do I have to install windows 98 first then XP and if so I do I install 98 on a sata drive?

I am getting the student version of Windows cause you save like $120 dollars; but there is nothing different from a normal Windows XP pro is there? I was planning on installing Visual Studio .net and MS SQL on this computer; I will be able to do this right (I know windows XP home does not have IIS so some elements do not work in VS if on a home version; but the student version has IIS right?) Sorry if this has been answered millions of times, hope you can understand my bad english this late at night

But the old dell in the office (the main one that the high speed modem and linksys is plugged into) needs to have the operating system re-installed again. It has reached its half life...a nuisance, a pain, unbearable, unusable! When I tried to re-install it wouldnt let me because the version on the computer is a newer version then the one on the disk.

C Drive Full

Aug 11, 2006

A msg. popped up today saying my C: drive was full.I let it clean it up, but still only have just over 600 MB free out of 15 GB. Only 2.16 GB of this is programs as I have my programs installed on another drive. Looking in my Windows folder, I found 16.8 MB of log (text) files. Can these be removed? Can I turn off whatever is creating them?I downloaded Disk Size Manager after reading some other messages on this site. It says my C: drive is 12,815.60 MB which should be 15 GB. Where is the just over 2 GB that are missing? Windows uses 4,887.88 MB. Documents and Settings is 3,090.28.Is this normal?I wish I could move the programs to my D: drive, but I can't find a way. They are only available on my computer restoration disks and it puts them where it wants to instead of letting me decide where I want them. I tried running a free program called Move It!, but it looks like they are moving but they don't.

Now when I check it I have 0% free space and the hard drive has over 20000 fragmented files, I've never seen it look like this.I ran spyware and came back no threats.Something has filled up my hardrive unexplainable.I've tried a lot of things from system restore to chkdsk.

Pro With SP3 Won't Let Administrator Have Full Control

Oct 4, 2009

I recently purchased an HP 8530w laptop that came with an xp from Vista downgrade preinstalled. I foolishly let Windows update automatically update the OS using the Express mode. It downloaded and installed SP3 and several .NET framework patches. The laptop also came with HP Credential Manager installed. The problem I'm encountering is that even though I logon under an administrator account I can't delete files under any of the USers under documents and settings, including the administrator acciunts Everytime I try to delete a cookie, or remove some documents (under My Documents) the file management program (Explorer or PowerDesk, I use both) pauses and then shuts down, and creates an error message to send to Microsoft. In short the system will allow the administrator to administrate. Can't uninstall SP3 because it doesn't show up in Add/Remove Programs, and can't delete any of the .NET framework updates even though they are listed.

C: Drive Totally Full

I have now reformatted it and am installing XP again, but would like to avoid this problem in the future if I can. Plan to use Fred Langa, of the Langa List, steps to lighten up XP, but not sure that will be enough since I don't know what caused the problem in the first place.
