When I boot my pc it freezes on the boot unless i press F10 and select my primary drive. If I press F2 to get into my bios it also freezes. Once I get into windows (booting slower then normal) I can not see my optical drives. The optical drives are showing in the device manager however.
View 3 RepliesI have a problem with one of the XP Versions on a hard drive. The problem started when my C: drive crashed. I replaced the drive and restored from the back-up I have. Since the new drive is larger than I care to use as a boot drive, the drive is partitioned.The restored back-up has is in the primary partition of the master drive. During the restore the OS stopped recognizing the optical drives(to complete the restore I used the second OS created in the second partition to copy the XP CD onto a partition of the hard drive I use for back-up. This drive is in a drive cradle). I have a CD reader/burner; a DVD reader in the tower; and a DVD burner in a USB2 drive cradle, none of these are recognized in the restored OS. In the process of trying to resolve this problem I installed a second version of XP in the second partition, this version recognizes all of the drives.
View 8 Replies View RelatedA week or so ago I preformed a repair installation of Windows XP Professional SP2 (retail) after basic Windows features (such as WMP10 and Search) became corrupted. The repair worked without a hitch, except for the fact that I've been denied access to my optical drives. All administrative accounts can access the drives without a problem, but limited and guest accounts can not. It doesn't matter if it's a music CD, data DVD burned on the limited user's account, or no disk is even inserted...each time I receive the ''Access denied'' error. All other removable storage (flash drives, card reader, etc) are accessable on all accounts.
I've tried restarting my computer, booting in Safe Mode, checking permissions (found nothing relevant), scanning for malware (sparkling clean), and even performing another repair installation. The drives are new (about 6 months old), fully functional, cables are firmly connected, all of the latest drivers are installed, and nothing (to my knowledge) has changed prior to or since the repair installation. I checked the Microsoft database, but only found registry edits for NT 4.0...Windows XP wasn't mentioned as having this issue.Is there a permission I have missed, registry edit, etc that might give my limited user accounts access to the LiteOn DL DVD+/-RW and Sony DVD-ROM drives again? Suggestions are appreciated, but solutions are preferable.
I'm running windows XP home with SP2, keep it completely updated and run ad-aware Se (New one), Norton, AVG as well as Spybot S&D, but recently something really wierd's happened.All of the Internet explorer style buttons at the top of folder windows have dissappeared! Completely vanished without a trace. Instead, I just have a silver title bar across the top, with the Minimise, close and maximise buttons, and the name of the program. Anything underneath, (Such as an address bar, view, file etc buttons and navigational buttons) have gone.I still have them in Internet explorer, before anyone asks.. But it's most annoying, particularly when i get lost in a folder tree and can't back up without using the backspace key!

I do not know when these went missing because my grandad does not use the drives often. I can still open the cd-rom drive and I can hear it loading, but I cannot open the cdwr drive. I tried a system restore point but that had no effect. So what do I need to do to get the drives back.

View 2 Replies View Relatedjust recently i was doing my usual bit and both cd/dvd drives droped out, after vigorous testing i found cdrom.sys and its shared componants refused to mount the drives as the service could not start, so i tried updating the drivers - no drivers more suitable than the ones i already have, my oppinion is the files are corrupt but it seems pretty hard to find replacments without individually going through the entire .cab database on the x64 disk, this is something i wish to avoid just incase its not even the problem.

Quite often when I start windows it appears to boot normally but in Explorer I can only see the home partition. Explorer runs very slowly and crashes. I've checked for viruses, run adaware and spybot but can't fix it. I have AVG and sygate personal fire wall running.

I added some more RAM, and installed Windows XP. It has six 9.1 GB Hard Drives, but it only recognizes the one hard drive that the OS is on. That is the only drive that will show up when ever I go to My Computer. My question, how do I get the other 5 hard drives to show up?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI removed a CD/RW drive and replaced it with a DVD/RW drive. I now have 2 DVD/RW drives. They are NEC-3500 and NEC-3540. The NEC-3400 was in my system before and worked fine. I have tried the registry fix CDGONE, unintalling the IDE controllers, reinstalling the newest Gigabyte board drivers, and removing the high and low filters. None of it has worked. I still can't use either DVD/CD. I have nothing with an alert in the system devices. They are not showing there. Also I tried putting the CD/RW back in and the red light stays lit up as soon as I connect it. It will not recognize that either. Tried system restore to before the change and putting the DVD/RW, DVD player and CD/RW back in I had before and it failed the restore. I also tried re-storing the registry but system restore removed the save I had and it's gone. I also tried hooking up a brand new Seagate IDE 200 GB hard drive I bought for backups and it doesn't recognize it. I have add on SATA card which is where my main Hard drive was before this and it still boots up fine.I just cannot use any CD or DVD in my system which is a major problem. I had DVD easy creator and a DVD copy program, including a DVD for free. I removed them all incase it was causing a problem. Still nothing recognized. When the motherboard boots up it finds nothing under IDE then goes to my SATA board and boots up.The IDE controllers are turned on in BIOS and all IDE's are turned on for auto sense in the BIOS. I had not made any changes in the BIOS before or after this. I need someone with some ideas.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI had a Win 98 SE PC on a 20 GB drive (FAT32), and then I decided to ad an 80 GB and install Win XP. Since I wanted to maintain some Win 98 function compatibility, I opted for dual-boot, formatting my 80GB HD to NTFS and installing all of the Win XP OS into that drive. The Win 98 runs fine and is limited to the 20GB FAT32 HD, while the Win XP can see both drives but its files and programs are contained in the 80GB NTFS HD.
Now that I have deemed the Win 98 OS no longer necessary for this machine - I am trying to figure out how to make my machine boot from the XP HD (I plan to format the 20GB disk and use it for back-up storage
I connect to my network drive through a VPN. The problem comes when I restart my computer - the mapped drive is missing and I have to start all over again.
This same problem exists if I use another user account too. How can this be fixed.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've had my computer since Christmas of last year. It's a pretty nice rig, lots of nice stuff in it. I'll start out with the first problem I've had with it. My DVD drive: it just disappears. I'll be running fine one minute, then the next my computer will freeze for a few seconds, then it's fine, then it'll freeze again, then it's fine. Then I take a look at my list of drives, and my DVD drive isn't on the list. I can still see my two hard drives, but not my DVD drive. This wasn't a HUGE issue to me; I figured I would just have to deal with not being able to install games or watch movies on my computer.So then, after trying to troubleshoot this issue for quite some time, I decide to completely power off my PC, including turning it off with the switch in the back. After waiting a few minutes, I flip the switch, and I hear the sound of something sparking and frying. "That's odd," I think to myself, but try to turn my computer on anyway. No response. I mash the power button but it just won't turn on. Turns out my power supply was fried. "Alright," I said. "I'll just go upgrade." But my dad disagreed and simply purchased one that was roughly equivalent to the one I currently had. Oh well, it's served me fine so far.
Recently, my problems have been getting worse. We tried reinstalling Windows, thinking that might fix the DVD drive. My dad hands me this "custom" CD with Windows and SP2 installed, and since he's likely to start screaming and spitting if I don't do his bidding, I installed with this CD. I am not sure if this was a mistake or not, but I'm thinking it was.Recently my computer has been locking and freezing at random intervals, usually while I'm playing World of Warcraft, though it also has happened at least twice while I'm just playing around on the computer, browsing the internet, ETC. I'm pretty computer savvy, but I've always struggled to confugure this RAID motherboard, but I've never encountered an error like this. I formatted a 60Gb Maxtor D740X-6L IDE drive with NTFS through an external harddrive connected to a laptop. THe drive is now blank. I connected this as a master on Channel 3 IDE on my Abit KG7 RAID mother board. I also connected my CD Writer to IDE channel 2 as a master, with a copy of WIndows XP in it. (I connected it like this because it doesn't recognise my harddrive on Channel 1 or 2 on the first page.)
When I try to boot I get the following error: BOOTMGR is missing. The strange thing is, as it boots it lists all four drive channels, and only shows Primary Master: 6L060J3 (presumably IDE channel 1). It does not show my CD writer, and infact the drive is connected to IDE channel 3. As you can see in attached photo1........
I get all these weird named folders being created every time I look and I have no idea where they come from. Also, windows updates aren't working, I think that might have something to do with it.

Recently, I have had four identical problems with four GX240 PCs.The GX240s all have been built using the same W2K image, and are about just over 3 years old
All of the problems have been stop errors on boot, and whilst I managed to recover one on "Last Known Good" I have had to run a repair on the other three. The early ones have been fine for a few weeks now. Nothing about the GX240s are different from any other systems, no specific software, even the drivers are pretty similar to GX260, but certainly nothing done on them recently.
Is it possible to dual boot between to different hard drives both running Windows XP? I just bought a new hard drive and I want to install it on the same machine and have a drive just for me and my wife and the kids can have their own. They down load so much stuff and cause the system to boot and run so slow. I'm tired of restoring it just to find 2 weeks later it's like it was.

Dell PC and for some reason the driver seems to go away. It occurs mostly
when the PC is started up. When this happens the scroll speed is so
uncontrollable that you can't do anything with it until you reload the
driver. When you open the mouse properties and click on update driver it
comes back and tells you that the best driver is installed so you have to
choose another driver so the mouse will work. When it happens again you
choose the driver it had before and then it will work again. Next time the
same thing - It seems all I get done is update the driver going between two
different drivers. What would be causing this.Can't an IBM mouse be used on a Dell?
I've used programs like Style XP or Theme XP but non of them have the theme I want. I want windows to look the way it does when you chose Start Shut down. Basically a greyscale theme is what I'm looking for. I realize that sounds wierd but maybe someone out there already has it and they wouldn't mind pointing me to where it can be found.
