I reinstalled and reformatted my hard drive, and the other one inside.I have a drive calledC: (Boot) SATAII - XP on on itD: (System) IDE - Just Data on itI reformatted C and D.The C: seems to require D: to load XP though- Is there some boot.ini to fix this?- I tried changing the BIOS order but that wont do any good.It appears they now work together and windows won't boot without the other drive.

computer failed to reboot. I used a boot disk to get started. I then noticed that the system does not recognize the drives C (where my Windows XP OS is installed) or D drive which is a seperate physical drive for my data.
Now I cannot boot without the 120GB plugged in (tried unplugging the drive and booting and it said the it was Unable to boot from disk or something). I eventually deleted the partition on the old drive in setup and then canceled setup, and I still couldn't boot. So I reinstalled winXP on the old drive and now it boots fine. Of course what I have to do is reinstall XP with the drive unplugged, but do I have to completely redo everything, or can I somehow reinstall without starting from scratch? I've tried using the setup disk in windows with the drive unplugged (I know it isn't safe to unplug drives with the computer running but I had run out of ideas), but it said that it couldn't reinstall windows because there was no valid System Partition (which is on the other drive.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have installed a new hard drive and installed a new XP Pro on it. I kept the old XP Home for some time untill I'm happy with the new installation. The old XP Home was on drive C and the new XP Pro is on drive E. I am now ready to reclaim drive C disk space and tried formatting it. However, it appers as the "system" drive, while the new HD (E) appears as "boot". I realized I wont be able to format it until I make E drive system and boot together (which usually appears as "system"). Eventually, I would prefer that the new disk will be labeled C

My DVD-Rom is also dead, so I booted from the old hard drive & installed a fresh OS (Windows XP) on the new drive. However, I cannot boot from the new drive alone, because the 'system volume' is Drive C: (old drive) & 'boot volume' is Drive G: (new drive). How can I fix this? Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. View 6 Replies View RelatedI had a Win 98 SE PC on a 20 GB drive (FAT32), and then I decided to ad an 80 GB and install Win XP. Since I wanted to maintain some Win 98 function compatibility, I opted for dual-boot, formatting my 80GB HD to NTFS and installing all of the Win XP OS into that drive. The Win 98 runs fine and is limited to the 20GB FAT32 HD, while the Win XP can see both drives but its files and programs are contained in the 80GB NTFS HD.
Now that I have deemed the Win 98 OS no longer necessary for this machine - I am trying to figure out how to make my machine boot from the XP HD (I plan to format the 20GB disk and use it for back-up storage

Once I get into windows (booting slower then normal) I can not see my optical drives. The optical drives are showing in the device manager however.

I have to close it down after my screen turns off to power save. Which is the best way round for the drives to be installed or could it possibly be something entirely different that is causing the problem please. I have no virus or malware on my computer and all automatic updates are applied on windows XP SP2.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a Gateway GT5032, Athlon X2 4200+ w/ 1GB RAM, 80GB (system) & 250GB HDs running WinXP MCE 2005. I was using the PC to open Nero VisionExpress while I was opening an edited DVR-MS (~1GB) movie when the movie became very choppy till it froze (Nero took a while to load as well). After waiting several minutes I end tasked the movie and continued to have a slow response time from the PC. It returned to normal speed, then I would try opening the movie (using Windows Media Player) and the movie was still choppy till it stalled. I eventually restarted the PC...I noticed that it took a LONG time to boot WinXP and would ''stall'' every 5 seconds for about 2 seconds. During bootup it reported that an error was in C:Windowssystem32Rasapi32.dll, but it did boot into Windows and all.
I rebooted in hopes of fixing the problem, but then the PC had trouble recognizing drives. After being shut off for about 10 minutes, the BIOS recognizes all drives again but reports an MBR error on boot up and will not even load Windows. I'm assuming that MBR is the Master Boot Record...and that scares me a lot. I am wandering if there is any easy way to repair this problem. And also if the MBR is indeed damaged, could it also have harmed my other files on the HD (such as Rasapi32.dll)? What is the function of Rasapi32.dll. I don't suspect a virus as I was not running any suspicious files lately.
I was running windows on an IDE hard drive and bought a new SATA and installed a fresh copy of windows on it, now having a dual boot with the old installation on the IDE. I've been running on the SATA drive for a few months now and I want to remove the IDE drive from my system but when I disconnect it and reboot I get a message that tells me NTLDR is missing so I am assuming that the boot record is on the IDE drive. How can I make the SATA drive my main boot drive?

I bought a second sata hard drive last week and installed Vista on it.I just can't figure out the correct boot.ini for this to work,I get an missing NTLD message, when I try to boot from Vista, but the XP one works with that configuration.I can boot off the Vista one fine if I set it in the bios boot order to come up before the XP hard drive, so the drive and the OS are fine

The folk at this forum have helped me out massively before, so I again humbly seek you expertise. My XP machine tells me that a file in the config/system directory is missing or corrupt. So I put the XP disk in and it loaded up some things, only to tell me that it cant find any drives. I checked - the physical drives are there (a pair of Seagate 160Gb set up as mirrors in RAID - the RAID screen appears before the "config/system" error message) and I pulled the connectors apart and and put them together again.
I need to restore to an earlier version on my computer as im having problems with Alias Maya Software (whole different issue) but when i go to restore to an earlier point this message comes up, Changes made to drive(s) J: after this point cannot be reversed because the drive was either excluded from System Restore monitoring, or was turned off or removed
View 2 Replies View Relatedi am reinstalling windows on a new partition of a new drive and I have several harddrives. when I boot from the windows xp setup cd and it lists all the drives, the one i want to install windows on is currently listed as drive G, but I want it to become drive C. If I just select to install on drive G will it change it to drive C? or do i have to do the thing where I unplug all the drives except the one I want and do the install and then plug the other ones back in afterwards? (i'm reinstalling bc i tried it before and windows ended up on the current drive G, which used to be drive J bc I forgot to unplug some usb devices..)

Therefore I wanted to remove the old drive and insert a new drive to back up the raid0. When I removed the old drive windows wouldn't boot. After reinserting the old drive I have discovered the boot.ini file is on this other drive along with a few windows hidden files. I didn't realise this would happen -noob- and therefore I'm not sure if I can just repartition the small number of files and move them onto the main Raid0 drives. Would this mess up windows booting? I have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers.It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".

Now i boot with Windows XP Pro so i can install it and it only recognizes one of my drives. I loaded my RAID drivers. I go ahead and try to install XP on it anyway. I tried to format the drive again using FULL format, i tried a Quick Format, and I also tried leaving it as is. It will install the setup files and reboot my computer. So i take out the XP disc but then it doesnt recognize any disks. Does anyone know how i can reintsall xP back on this sysetm or how I can get XP to recognize both my drives even if i slipstreamed my RAID drivers in it already.

I have a Win2000 network and now have around 20 new XP Pro machines on it.Every user has at least one drive mapped to one of our servers to store files Every so often, for no reason that I have figured out, when trying to access a mapped drive it hangs up and you are asked for a username and password.This happens to me with my perminatly mapped drives and new ones I make on the fly. No username or password seems to work, and the easiest way to get it to work correctly is to reboot. This only happens with the XP machines.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm pretty computer savvy, but I've always struggled to confugure this RAID motherboard, but I've never encountered an error like this. I formatted a 60Gb Maxtor D740X-6L IDE drive with NTFS through an external harddrive connected to a laptop. THe drive is now blank. I connected this as a master on Channel 3 IDE on my Abit KG7 RAID mother board. I also connected my CD Writer to IDE channel 2 as a master, with a copy of WIndows XP in it. (I connected it like this because it doesn't recognise my harddrive on Channel 1 or 2 on the first page.)
When I try to boot I get the following error: BOOTMGR is missing. The strange thing is, as it boots it lists all four drive channels, and only shows Primary Master: 6L060J3 (presumably IDE channel 1). It does not show my CD writer, and infact the drive is connected to IDE channel 3. As you can see in attached photo1........
i have 2 HDD one with the os and the other one for data.I reformatted my data drive by deleting and re-creating partition via windows xp boot cd. Afterwards it went through the whole windows instillation thing.How can i reformat this drive without installing windows xp afterwards?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem.
- I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery.
- I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install.
- I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help.
- I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters.
- i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios.
I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.
