I have a problem with one of the XP Versions on a hard drive. The problem started when my C: drive crashed. I replaced the drive and restored from the back-up I have. Since the new drive is larger than I care to use as a boot drive, the drive is partitioned. The restored back-up has is in the primary partition of the master drive. During the restore the OS stopped recognizing the optical drives(to complete the restore I used the second OS created in the second partition to copy the XP CD onto a partition of the hard drive I use for back-up. This drive is in a drive cradle). I have a CD reader/burner; a DVD reader in the tower; and a DVD burner in a USB2 drive cradle, none of these are recognized in the restored OS. In the process of trying to resolve this problem I installed a second version of XP in the second partition, this version recognizes all of the drives.
A week or so ago I preformed a repair installation of Windows XP Professional SP2 (retail) after basic Windows features (such as WMP10 and Search) became corrupted. The repair worked without a hitch, except for the fact that I've been denied access to my optical drives. All administrative accounts can access the drives without a problem, but limited and guest accounts can not. It doesn't matter if it's a music CD, data DVD burned on the limited user's account, or no disk is even inserted...each time I receive the ''Access denied'' error. All other removable storage (flash drives, card reader, etc) are accessable on all accounts. I've tried restarting my computer, booting in Safe Mode, checking permissions (found nothing relevant), scanning for malware (sparkling clean), and even performing another repair installation. The drives are new (about 6 months old), fully functional, cables are firmly connected, all of the latest drivers are installed, and nothing (to my knowledge) has changed prior to or since the repair installation. I checked the Microsoft database, but only found registry edits for NT 4.0...Windows XP wasn't mentioned as having this issue. Is there a permission I have missed, registry edit, etc that might give my limited user accounts access to the LiteOn DL DVD+/-RW and Sony DVD-ROM drives again? Suggestions are appreciated, but solutions are preferable.
When I boot my pc it freezes on the boot unless i press F10 and select my primary drive. If I press F2 to get into my bios it also freezes. Once I get into windows (booting slower then normal) I can not see my optical drives. The optical drives are showing in the device manager however.
Since I can "eject" the cd through right-clicking on the drive in my computer, i was wondering if there is an "open" feature, since my new case has drive cover, like the example below:[img]http://images1.chiefvalue.com/productimage/11-212-031-04.jpgp/img]since i have an old DVD drive the button is place differently from the button placed on the case, so i'm thinking of alternatives ways in opening the drive or if there's an easier way to approach this.what do all the function keys mean anyway? I have a computer running Windows XP PRO SP2 with 2, 250gb hard drives. The operating system and programs are on the C drive and the second drive which is removable is supposed to be for my data, but Windows doesn't recognize it so I can't use it. Right now I have my data on an external hard drive, connected by USB.
The second hard drive is new from my manufacturer (I have a custom computer and this is a replacement hard drive--the original was faulty) and I haven't put anything on it yet. When I first put it in my machine, I was able to see it in "My Computer". The next day when I was ready to start copying my data over, it was nowhere to be found. I turned off the machine, pulled out the drive and put it back and rebooted--still no show.
computer failed to reboot. I used a boot disk to get started. I then noticed that the system does not recognize the drives C (where my Windows XP OS is installed) or D drive which is a seperate physical drive for my data.
I installed windows service pack 1 for windows xp and now my cd and dvd drives aren't recognized and I lost sound in my speakers. I got a code 39 error. The fix in windows support is useless
I recently was forced to do a re-install of XP to clean up a few bugs. The system has 3 hard drives, but since the reinstall, only the C: drive appears. The other two are nowhere to be found.I've tried mapping to them, but they just don't show up there as a mapping option.Anyone have any advice? When I added the extra hard drives I didn't have an available slot and did have to create a partition. I no longer have the software I had originally used though. Do I need it to make the 2 other drives visable?
I keep getting this error "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it". And if I leave my PC on to long the keyboard, mouse, and sometimes even the monitor stop working. I've tried unplugging the keyboard and mouse (which are not USB) and plugging them back in, but to no avail.
I have an old T1090 eMachine that doesn't recognize the new larger hard drives. I purchased a 200 GB PATA (IDE) drive and it shows up as a 75 GB drive using GParted and under Windows Disk Management. I expected that it would only be recognized as 137 GB, but I can't explain why it only sees 75 GB. I suspect that the BIOS needs to be updated, but I've never done this before so I was looking for a procedure and ideas for trying to find the latest BIOS online.
I've got this old mobo Abit VT7. I want to install XP on it. However, the XP disc doesn't recognize SATA hard drives. So I downloaded official SATA driver from the Abit website http://tinyurl.com/kua5qz and tries to slipstream my XP disc following the instructions set forth here http://tinyurl.com/37anvn . I am not too clear how to incorporate the drivers from the official drivers, but Nlite seems to be able to find the drivers once I pointed it to the top unzipped driver directory, and I selected the XP folder for it. However, the newly created XP disc still fails to recognize the SATA hard drives. Alternatively, I believe I could have a boot floppy which would load the drivers in, then I launch the setup in the XP installation CD via command line. But I don't know how to create a boot disc which has those SATA drivers in.
The Dell 8250 Pentium IV computer will not recognize the new master 160 GHZ or the origional, now slave, 40 GHZ, Hard drives. All the connections and jumpers are installed correctly. I tried a new motherboard and a new cable, both did not resolve this problem. Even ran a diagnostic program called "Tuff Test", running at boot up and the RAM and all other items checked OK, showing all working properly. The BIOS, now set to boot up correctly, off the proper drive, seems to recognize both removable drives and the floppy, but not the hard drives. When I received the computer it was password protected. after asking and waiting for a week, with no response, I therefore, in safe mode, entered the BIOS and chose for it to boot off of the CD Rw that I thought was the proper and shut the Hard Drive off. Here the CD RW was a slave and not the master. No luck in installing the OS. I bought a new 160 GHZ HD with the thought that I could load the OS, again no luck. I replaced the battery and tried again with no luck.
I am having problmes booting my laptop. Normally for my desktop I'd just pop in the CD and boot from disk, but with this computer it isn't that simple.
My computer: Sony Vaio VGN-x505ZP
My OS: Windows XP Pro
The Problem: When I restarted my computer at one point (after trying to clean off some spyware) it told me a file was missing or corrupt: <windows root>system32hal.dll
I keep losing my mouse driver. I have installed a IBM optical mouse on my Dell PC and for some reason the driver seems to go away. It occurs mostly when the PC is started up. When this happens the scroll speed is so uncontrollable that you can't do anything with it until you reload the driver. When you open the mouse properties and click on update driver it comes back and tells you that the best driver is installed so you have to choose another driver so the mouse will work. When it happens again you choose the driver it had before and then it will work again. Next time the same thing - It seems all I get done is update the driver going between two different drivers. What would be causing this. Can't an IBM mouse be used on a Dell?
I am having problems getting my USB optical Microsoft mouse to work on my new Toshiba Satalite A85 notebook.I plug it in to any of the usb ports and it wont work. I tried restarting too
As I'm sure you know, when you install most games, they create a desktop shortcut. However, these never work on my machine. Clicking them always pops up a message that says that the CD/DVD is not found, and it can't be located no matter how many times you hit "retry." The only way to start a game is to hit eject, then close the tray again. Even this just takes you to the disc's main menu rather than making the short-cut work. Now, I realize that I can just eject/insert the disk, or click the exe on the disk itself to play each time...I'm just curious as to why the game-installed shortcuts never work.
I have the Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse 2.0, have installed the intellipoint 5.0 software prior to connecting the mouse. Plugged in the receiver and all worked fine for a while. The pointer moves to the middle of the left side of the screen and then acts like it is on an elastic band. As you try to move anywhere, always returning to the middle left of screen, making the mouse unuseable. Found the software update to 5.2, uninstalled 5.0 and installed 5.2, again worked fine to start then problem arose again.I am as happy as you can be that there are no known viruses/trojans etc etc.
I have completed the mouse software/registry removal as per Microsoft Knowledge base for xp and re-installed 5.2, fine in the first instance but again after an undertermined time problem was back again.Thought it may be a faulty mouse so have had it exchanged, again fine for a while but then problem back again. So have decided it MUST be software oriented. Have removed rubbish from the system and the registry, on reboot fine for a while then problem back again. Have tried the USB and PS2 connections with the same result for both. Connected a standard cabelled PS2 mouse and it works fine. I have also tried moving the receiver unit to various places within its cable range to see if it is suffering interference from monitors etc, no difference seen. Likewise pressing the button on the receiver and mouse to resync them makes no difference.
I have a Digital Media Pro Keyboard and an optical mouse. It seems like the PC just freezes by itself. I'm told by the GF that it usually happens when it's just sitting idle. The light on the mouse goes out and the keyboard stops working as well. They are both USB devices. Please check out the hijack log and let me know if there is something going on that I am not seeing,
I tried to install Ubuntu onto my HD yesterday, and i ran into an issue during the install (i received a message that said the optical disk or hard drive had an error and that the instal would be aborted). So the Ubuntu install was aborted, and i tried to boot back into windows but received this message:
Quote: Load needed for kerenl:
ntoskrnl.dll
hal.dll
kdcom.dll I have tried to boot into safe mood with no luck. So i tried to do a repair from the XP disk i have, but then i received this error message:
I have an optical mouse on a Dell 8400 running x/p pro. The last two weeks my mouse keeps freezing for no apparent reason. I keep hearing my machine make the tone that it uses for a usb device to be plugged and unplugged through out the day for no reason, and the usb mouse just either responds erratically or freezes altogether. I then need to unplug and replug it to make it function again.
I have already tried virus scans, with no result, updated the bios, and received a usb driver hotfix from microsoft, but non of these have remedied the issue. This is a new issue on a 2 year old machine so I can only deduce there is some type of virus or worm running that I can't locate.I have already tried the mouse on another machine it functions correctly, and it is clean, with no optical issues.
I have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers. It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".
I recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem. - I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery. - I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install. - I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help. - I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters. - i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios. I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.
My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. Uninstalled with Revo Uninstaller
I am using Windows XP Professional SP2 on an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe MB. I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.
I work for a fire department and they have Desktop Authority map certain network drives when they login. For some reason, DTA will map the drives when they login, and everything works fine, but after an hour or two, they lose connectivity to that drive and are no longer able to access it. I know this is very vague, but has anyone had this problem?BTW, I just recently upgraded from NT 4.0 to Server 2003 Standard, and we've had tons of other little problems with permissions and the like. Is this the cause of the dissapearing drives?
My log in name doesn't really do my novice pc skill justice. I am actually dumber than a PC spare. I decided to leave the stone age sort of and bought a copy of windows xp home to extend the life of my POS just a couple more months. I didn't want to buy a new computer and got a deal on a copy of xp home. I am planning on buying components and building a system from scratch soon, but for now just needed to keep going. Several of the sites I like to frequent recently upgraded and no longer support ME. The copy of xp I received turned out to be an OEM Windows XP Home w/ service pack 2.Like a moronic bozo I set my IOLO Drivescrubber into motion and whiped my HD clean. I didn't change anything in the bios as one: don't know how to and two: afraid to. Once the drive was clean however it failed to recognize the cd rom of xp. I then remembered I had to format and partition the drive in order for it to do so.
I just got a new custom computer with a ECS Kt600 Mb, AMD 2200 XP, Maxtor 80gb hdd, 512mb pc2700. Everything work great but when I tried to hook up my HP V40 all-in-one printer (USB cable), it will not recognize it at all. I changed cables but to no avail. I checked the ports and it recognizes my pen drive when I plug it in.
I reloaded Windows XP Pro I was asked to activate, which I didn't do at that time. I lost my Internet connection and sound at the same time. I did a phone activation and I thought it went thru. I had a message to activate. I did the phone activation and was told DO NO RECOGNIZE THIS AS A VALID PRODUCT
