I get all these weird named folders being created every time I look and I have no idea where they come from. Also, windows updates aren't working, I think that might have something to do with it.
View 1 Repliesi have this one problem. i created new folder in total commander (F7) and named it whatever. the folder was created but those last three slashes didnt appear in the name. i wanted to delete (DEL key) it but it didnt work... the folder was still there without any error message. i ran checkdisk (correct errors etc.) and then tryed to del it. i finally downloaded some erase program that should do the deleting. but again it didnt work. i really dunno what should i do besides formating the disc. any ideas what could work?

View 14 Replies View RelatedBuilding a new network of 6 boxes. All using WinXP Pro SP3.Yesterday I created a few shared folders - and they work fine all the other machines can access them. Installed a bunch of new software on the same main machine today also had a BIOS/registry/diskcheck issue - but everything seems fine now . EXCEPT, any folders I create as shared folders, while they show up on the other machines - all get the "can't be accessed permission denied" type of error message.The shares I created yesterday still work, they can be accessed, its just any new ones I create can not.simple file sharing is off, I edited the reg key to all anonymous connections, I added the NETWORK as a group allowed to access the new shares - but nothing works.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running windows XP home with SP2, keep it completely updated and run ad-aware Se (New one), Norton, AVG as well as Spybot S&D, but recently something really wierd's happened.All of the Internet explorer style buttons at the top of folder windows have dissappeared! Completely vanished without a trace. Instead, I just have a silver title bar across the top, with the Minimise, close and maximise buttons, and the name of the program. Anything underneath, (Such as an address bar, view, file etc buttons and navigational buttons) have gone.I still have them in Internet explorer, before anyone asks.. But it's most annoying, particularly when i get lost in a folder tree and can't back up without using the backspace key!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if anyone could throw some insight into a wierd problem I have with some Dell PCs. On site we have a selection of GX240, 260, 60, 270, 280s. Recently, I have had four identical problems with four GX240 PCs.The GX240s all have been built using the same W2K image, and are about just over 3 years old
All of the problems have been stop errors on boot, and whilst I managed to recover one on "Last Known Good" I have had to run a repair on the other three. The early ones have been fine for a few weeks now. Nothing about the GX240s are different from any other systems, no specific software, even the drivers are pretty similar to GX260, but certainly nothing done on them recently.
I've used programs like Style XP or Theme XP but non of them have the theme I want. I want windows to look the way it does when you chose Start Shut down. Basically a greyscale theme is what I'm looking for. I realize that sounds wierd but maybe someone out there already has it and they wouldn't mind pointing me to where it can be found.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I boot my pc it freezes on the boot unless i press F10 and select my primary drive. If I press F2 to get into my bios it also freezes. Once I get into windows (booting slower then normal) I can not see my optical drives. The optical drives are showing in the device manager however.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a amd64 200 with 1GB RAM and 80 GB HD running xp home edition sp2. around may, sp3 tried to install a number of times but failed. After reading the info about how to install sp3, I did so and it completed!
The system worked for about 2 hours and then a 'MACHINE_EXCEPTION' error. I uninstalled sp3 and no more machine_exception errors! now, the anti-virus software started finding infections in windows,windowssystem32, even 'System Volume Information'
Does anyone know why PCMark05 would give bizarrely low numbers for any disk-related test under XP 32bit? I tried upgrading to SP3 (was SP2) but still get crazy numbers. All other tests work fine, but anything disk-related and results such as 0.002MB/sec are given, even though the time taken for the tests, and all other tests (HDTach, Sandra, etc.) suggest the disks are working just fine (normal max sustained speed is around 100MB/sec). I'm using all U320 SCSI, 147GB 15K (Maxtor Atlas 15K II), both PCIX and PCIe U320 cards, and it happens no matter what disk I use, or what card the disk is connected to. I was hoping to try the test using hw vs. sw RAID, but so far there's no point trying as long as the disk tests are doing a wobbly.

Lots of wierd problems that may or may not be connected!A) My computer will crash when doing anything with java, multiplayer when using MS VM. I use sun java now, and it has yet to crash.B) Computer has just started crashing when loading websites while listening to music...C) Frequently my monitor will black out for about 15 seconds, then come back on with Lower color quality.D) Tab button doesnt work in IE.
E) Last time my PC crashed it took me to the BIOS settings and asked if i wanted to update anything but i really know nothing about it
Notice considerable lag when doing the following simple tasks: use the dialog boxes to browse folders (save as, etc) is slow ,double clicking my computer or any folders is slow, right click and create new folders is slow, clicking START button and going to programs is slow

View 6 Replies View RelatedRecently I downloaded WinOPtimizer 4 and started to tweak my computer.I went to logon tweaking and when it showed to logon as user I changed it to admninistrator since I am the only one using the computer and have no other users. Well what happened was that the application created another Administrator. Now I have 2 Administrator and would like to delete the one created by the software but I cannot because the system will not let me. It states that to delete an account that is an administrator I have to have the other administrator do it but I try and I cannot.

Copied "My Documents" folder from thumb drive to the computer

Noticed several folders in "My Documents" were missing so thought I didn't back up to the thumb drive often enough so figured they were lost in the crash.
Wasl looking for a file and was unsure in which folder it might be located so did a "search" and found it in "My Documents". Went back to the "My Documents" folder and it wasn't there so did another search. This is what I discovered:
I went into Windows Explorer and found "My Documents"
I went into "My Computer" and then the "C" drive and found Documents and Settings, Gary, My Documents in the tree
I installed UNIX Services for Windows. Then I installed a UNIX application. Then I wanted to remove both.
I tried to removed the application but some of the files would not let me delete them.I then uninstalled UNIX Services for Windows which worked fine but left behind it's folder 'C:SFU' because a few application folders are there and are write protected.I installed them under UNIX Services for Windows and now I can't delete them.Any back doors or UTILS to get rid of them? I tried KILLBOX but it could not do it.
I just moved in to my buddy from work, and decided to put a pass on my PC, since a lot of people go thru the house on weekends. I set up an account, gave it admin privileges, but when setup asked: "would you like to give that account access to files?" (or some similar question) I selected NO. When account loaded I couldn't get access to any of my files! The problem now is that I can't delete that new account, because it's the only account! I tried setting up another one with administrator privileges, but it doesn't ask that question anymore (would you like to give that account access to files?), so I can't get access?

I haven't made any changes to my machine for a good while either (apart from the usual microsoft updates anyway, I turned my machine on this morning, and it booted up as it normally does, but one other box popped up on my screen: The system has recovered from a serious error. A log of this error has been created.

I restarted the computer - no error message - but now it appears to be logged in as a guest (my settings have all gone - no icons for my files on desktop, etc.). When I look at the users in control panel it shows just main user and guest (i don't use the users options on windows - only me using the computer).

A couple of times recently, I have made service calls that if I could have gotten into the Administrator's account, I could have fixed it; but, some fool had changed passwords on both the user account and the Administator account.Is there a way to create an invisible account with administrator privilidges that can be accessed in some way but that doesn't show up in the log-in screen or under Users and Passwords?

Is there a default password?Otherwise are there any restriction for the passsword (length, using digits,..)
