Slow Startup And Shut Down Speeds
Jul 25, 2007
It was configured with windows vista I was using Windows Vista 32bit for 2 months and then switched to 64 bit for the next 2 months. Things were slow, startup, shutdown, normal working etc. Some games ran slow (Halflife 2:Episode One, Company of Heroes), some games ran perfect (Oblivion Elder Scrols, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory). Then I switched back to XP. we have really degraded our thinking level. We guys used to complain about the slow startup and shut down speeds of XP.

I've been hunting round for days trying to find out why my computer takes so long to copy a large file. I am trying to backup a virtual PC drive of 8Gb abd it takes 30 minutes or so. This is just making a simple backup copy of the file to the same folder on an SATA drive. The machine is quite new, all windows updates installed, antivirus is up to date etc.

I have a problem with Windows XP. I didn't shut down the PC properly. After that when I switch it on, the windows progresses until the screen with blue button running right-left left-right for couple of seconds and then: black screen and nothing.I tried safe startup - it worked OK. I performed recovery to yesterday savepoint, but the result remains the same as above.

I have an Alienware Sentia laptop with a 1.8Ghz processor, 1Gb RAM running XP Sp-2 It has AVG Firewall & Virus guard & I regularly run Spybot Search & Destroy. It starts up quickly & runs fast, I love it. until it's time to shut down. After clicking the red Shutdown button it takes nearly 90 seconds before the lights actually all go out. The screen does it's "windows is shutting down" bit & then goes black but the green LED for disc activity continues for 30-40 seconds which seems an age when you're just stood waiting for it.Anyone any ideas to speed it up? Or know why it does it (I won't mind so much if I know why) I'm sure it wasn't this slow for the first few months.

I turned my computer on and after rebooting once, I pressed the F8 key and chose "disable reboot after system failure" and the blue screen said: A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, then restart your computer. STOP: 0X0000007B (0xF7B70528, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) I tried running it in safe mode but it never made it to the windows log-in

I am wondering if they are all related. When I click start>shut down, computer hangs up for about 5 minutes before the box, shut down, restart, etc. shows up-computer then shuts down normally. When I print documents, the first will print, then it takes a long time before another will print. The printer is new and works fine. It is connected to this computer, but shared over a home network. Does the same with the other computers in the network. The computer screen will occasionally go dark and just reboot.

I have a demension 8400 with windows xp pro media center. It has a 3 ghz processor 160gb hard drive. I have it on a wireless setup. I don't know much about the inside of a computer so I need help. It is extremely slow to open 1/2 hour or so and even more so to get into any program or internet. Yesterday I checked everything I could check and somehow or another I found a screen that had appeared stating errors and saying something about images not being able to open.

I recently had to reload Windows XP on my computer. Since I have done that, my computer has been running very slow. When I scroll down on the screen, it takes a few seconds to refresh the screen rather than being a smooth flow. Also media download speeds are slower. Is there a way to speed up my processor or something, or something I can reset to speed it up? I have a Broadband connection, but I don't think the connection is the problem because there is the same slow speed when I am not on-line.

My computer suddenly started playing audio files too fast, such that they sound like the Chipmunks. This is for direct CD play as well as MP3 files on a variety of players.
I tried adjusting hardware acceleration (as suggested on another website) and as I suspected, it didn't work.
Any suggestions to fix this?

I recently downloaded and installed the latest security updates for Win XP. The computer runs fine, but when
it is time to shut it down it takes an extremely long time to complete the shut down. I defragmented the hard
drive thinking that would solve the problem but it had no noticeable affect

My sister's computer is running very slowly, particularly at startup (which seems to take forever). I've got Panda antivirus software running and do reasonably regular spyware scans with AdAware, but am not sure if the problem is just that the computer is old with too little memory / overheating because it's on almost all the time / something else I haven't thought of. To help me determine what's going on, could someone much smarter than myself take a look at this HJT log and see if you see anything of concern?

I have two hard drives with different speeds the primary is 7200 the slave 5400, but my computer sometimes will not boot first time in the morning. I have to close it down after my screen turns off to power save. Which is the best way round for the drives to be installed or could it possibly be something entirely different that is causing the problem please. I have no virus or malware on my computer and all automatic updates are applied on windows XP SP2.

Almost any file I download ends up being corrupted. I've downloaded files from respectable download sources (download.com, etc), and it all ends up with some sort of corruption. My BIOS didnt detect my RAM speeds correctly, so I fixed those. Don't think that really would cause any problems either way.

think it all started 2 days ago. i had installed a game, but it would not start cause i needed some missing dll files. which i inserted. one of the things i did wrong however was that i tried to replace a faultrep.dll file. this was not the file i wanted to change. i read wrong on the error dll messege, but whenever i tried to replace it the old file would swap in, so no harm should have come from that. i also installed a missing direct x file: D3DX929.dll ..... thats the dll changes i have done. anyway the next day startup was weeery slow. i uslay can boot up my pc in 2 minutes, now it takes 5++ minutes, the destop appears in normal time. but the welcome tune is a good 2 minutes late, then programs that now are slow to start up are live messenger and zone alarm pro. also i have other problems. like i cant accses "my computer" by icon or other ways

I've gone to msconfig and deleted some start up files, deleted some programs from add/remove, made folders for favorites. Everything I could think of to decrease startup time. Nothing seems to help. I still have to wait around 10-15 mins before IE starts up. I even installed firefox to see if that would help with start up. Nothing. I did a Diskeeper scan and found that there were alot of low system files (pink). Could this be the reason for a slow start up. Is there anyway that I can help this poor little computer. It really drags at startup.

One of these days I'll finally know everything about this machine....or maybe not. Right now it's taking about 3-4 minutes to be usable after the login. In an effort to alleviate the problem, I ran a search through TSG, and pulled up this thread. I followed the directions given by Phantom010 to look at: Site 1--which actually identifies several of my PROCESSES as unnecessary/bad, but I'm positive that I shouldn't mess with the processes in the task manager without knowing what I'm doing. If I need to remove some of my processes, I'd be happy to do so.

I've cleared a lot of the startup programs from the list (there was over 30!!) but it doesn't seem to be loading a whole lot faster, or even noticeably faster. I've downloaded HJT, in case you think I'll need it, but I don't know that I have a virus, since only the startup seems to be affected (and SAS & Avira don't pull anything up besides the occasional tracking cookie)............

One of the most common XP topic concerns shut-down or power-down issues. The solution can be as simple as going into Power Options in Control Panel and changing the "When I Press The Power Button" setting to: "shut down" or so complex that it simply can't be identified. Sometimes it's a third party product causing a reboot at Shutdown (ie, Roxio CD 5.0 - and there is a fix). Unquestionably, one of the best sites for coverage of this topic is at AUMHA.ORG. I have taken the liberty of pasting the comprehensive information they provide below. Please take the time to locate your specific problem and read their suggested fix. If you still have questions, then by all means post them in the General Questions Forum.
