Slow Copy Speeds SATA

Aug 23, 2008

I've been hunting round for days trying to find out why my computer takes so long to copy a large file. I am trying to backup a virtual PC drive of 8Gb abd it takes 30 minutes or so. This is just making a simple backup copy of the file to the same folder on an SATA drive. The machine is quite new, all windows updates installed, antivirus is up to date etc.

Slow Startup And Shut Down Speeds

Jul 25, 2007

It was configured with windows vista I was using Windows Vista 32bit for 2 months and then switched to 64 bit for the next 2 months. Things were slow, startup, shutdown, normal working etc. Some games ran slow (Halflife 2:Episode One, Company of Heroes), some games ran perfect (Oblivion Elder Scrols, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory). Then I switched back to XP. we have really degraded our thinking level. We guys used to complain about the slow startup and shut down speeds of XP.

Maxtor SATA Hard Drive Slow - Long Boot

May 18, 2007

I have a maxtor hard drive SATA 200GB as my main drive and a second drive D. Very recently when I have noticed that my computer took longer to boot into windows. Applications seem to take a bit longer than usual to load. I have XP SP2 installed. I defragment my drive every few weeks so its not a defragment problem however when I try to defrag it now, it takes many times longer to do so. Also for a scan disk of C: (chkdsk on boot) it took 6 hours to get to about 25%. So there must be a problem. I can hear the hard drive loading sound for a few seconds and then there is a very long pause maybe about 10-20 minutes. It should only take a few hours the last time i did it maybe about 5 hours. Something is wrong.

When I transfer a large file like 1gb into my drive D it takes 15 minutes. Which is a bit long for a SATA enabled hard drive. I have had this drive for about 2 years now and it has never gone this slow before. I have downloaded the seatools from the maxtor website which diagnoses the drive. The tool ran slow but my hard drive passed the tests. Also when I ran that scan disk, it did say there was a mirror copy of something and also some other things. I think it had the word security in it so it deleted somethings. It mentioned indexes and some files. I forgot most of it.

I have checked my D drive and it is running fine and unaffected. Also I noticed during bootup that on the windows logo screen, the one with the bar moving from left to right that it freezes for about 5 seconds somewhere near the end of its loading. Then my keyboard lights come on (recognises keyboard). Later after the logo disappears, the screen is black for about 1-2 minutes and the hard drive periodically stops loading then starts loading something. This also happens when the welcome blue background screen comes on which is making boot times slow. Also happens when I shut down. There are some periods of hard disk inactivity.

Media Download Speeds Are Slower

Jul 15, 2005

I recently had to reload Windows XP on my computer. Since I have done that, my computer has been running very slow. When I scroll down on the screen, it takes a few seconds to refresh the screen rather than being a smooth flow. Also media download speeds are slower. Is there a way to speed up my processor or something, or something I can reset to speed it up? I have a Broadband connection, but I don't think the connection is the problem because there is the same slow speed when I am not on-line.

Audio Playback Speeds Too Fast?

Oct 28, 2008

My computer suddenly started playing audio files too fast, such that they sound like the Chipmunks. This is for direct CD play as well as MP3 files on a variety of players.
I tried adjusting hardware acceleration (as suggested on another website) and as I suspected, it didn't work.
Any suggestions to fix this?

Corrupted Files And Downloads / BIOS Didnt Detect My RAM Speeds

Almost any file I download ends up being corrupted. I've downloaded files from respectable download sources (download.com, etc), and it all ends up with some sort of corruption. My BIOS didnt detect my RAM speeds correctly, so I fixed those. Don't think that really would cause any problems either way.

Computer Running Slow - Not Just Internet Slow But Onboard Slow

May 10, 2010

Lately my computer has been extremely slow, not just internet slow but onboard slow. For example, if I click on an application from the desktop it will sit there for 10-20 seconds before anything happens. Occasionally I'll click multiple times on something and nothing will happen then 30 seconds later it will open multiple instances of things. This delay has been happening with just about anything I click on, acting like the computer's busy doing something else when nothing else should be going on. I've looked in the task manager and the applications column will be blank

Re-formatting - SATA HDD

Jan 15, 2009

Well, as the title suggests, i'm the latest in what is seemingly a long line of people having trouble attempting to perform the same task - reformatting a laptop running on Windows XP to run on a fresh, clean, smooth, lovely version of XP SP2.

I have read through every single topic with reference to what I am trying to do, and am still COMPLETELY lost. I have tried absolutely everything I can think of, my friend can think of, everything that has been suggested on various websites to no avail. I must just be doing things wrong.

CD SATA Install To IDE

Jan 28, 2008

I'm getting a Bad_Pool_Caller BSOD, along with some misc. BSOD's while trying to do a fresh install of Windows from a SATA Cdrom to an ATA IDE harddrive. Are there any known issues with trying to install an OS from SATA to IDE?

I was supposed to have SATA hdd as well, but shipping screw'd up, and I got sent an ATA instead. I'm pretty sure that I will be able to figure out the solution tomorrow when I get to record the other information on the BSOD screens. I was just curious if there are any known issues or negatives associated with writing from a SATA cdrom drive to an IDE?

Canceling An Reinstall Or With SATA

Mar 28, 2007

If you have a short attention span you can skip to the last paragraph. I recently decided to re-install XP (sp2) on my computer and discovered that it is not that easy when your drive is SATA (Samsung SP1614C). After being fobbed off by Mesh and Samsung when asking for the driver that is required for the SATA drive someone told me that you only need to update the driver for the Motherboard (Asus SK8N Socket 940). So I restart the computer, hit delete to enter the setup (which it now does automaticly), hit f6 in order to load raid drivers, select the drivers and watch it fail. As this did not work either. I gave up. The short story is that I now am faced with the option to start windows normally or enter the setup every time I turn my computer on. Is there a way that anyone knows to get rid of this without re-installing windows (which apparently is literally inpossible). Or altertively if you can tell me how to

Trying To Install New SATA Harddrive

Nov 17, 2007

I'm getting extremely frustrated with a problem I keep encountering trying to install a new SATA Hard Drive. I connect the SATA HD power & data cable I prepare a FDD with the necessary HD Cotroller Drivers from the motherboard utilities CD I boot the PC I insert my XP Pro (SP2) CD The PC boots from the CD I press F6 when prompted for 3rd party drivers When prompted, I install the necessary drivers from the FDD I then get to the bit where I chose to install Windows rather than do a Repair - when I select install, I'm told that no HD is present & that I need to exit by pressing F3 I've tried removing RAM to see if any is dodgy but still encounter the same problem.

I've attached the new SATA HD to a different PC & everything moves on perfectly but I quit before formatting the drive as I want to do a clean install on the other PC. I'm beginning to think that there might be a problem with the Motherboard but am open to suggestions (the old HD is stuck in an infitinte boot loop & am unable to slave it to another HD as it wont respond - maybe caused by a Motherboard problem?).

Cannot Install With New SATA Harddrive

May 3, 2007

After my last hard drive took a nosedive, I went out and bought a Western Digital Serial ATA 500 gb harddrive. I've physically put it in my Sony Vaio Desktop. I am trying to install Windows XP Professional now. When I get to the Setup screen is says Unknown Disk. I've already seemed to install the drivers for the new harddisk (they provided me a CD to install the drivers, it came with a program called "Lifeguard Tool" or something like that.

I have tried pressing F6 to install a RAID driver using the Windows setup... I pressed S... but then I find out I need a floppy disk drive... even if I had one, the box only came with a CD and not any floppy disks. I've tried slipstreaming Windows xp cd, service pack 2, and the drivers onto one bootable cd, it did not work... i'm too tired to go in there and find out why. *sigh*

Can't Install On SATA Harddrive

Jan 30, 2007

I've tried running the CD with my other 80GB WD IDE hard drive inside and it doesn't cause this stop error. I've been screwing with this for 2 weeks now trying everything I can find on google and forums to fix this problem. I have the correct SATA drivers for my board as well for the drive of which I hit F6 for at the beginning of setup.
