Audio Playback Speeds Too Fast?
Oct 28, 2008
My computer suddenly started playing audio files too fast, such that they sound like the Chipmunks. This is for direct CD play as well as MP3 files on a variety of players.
I tried adjusting hardware acceleration (as suggested on another website) and as I suspected, it didn't work.
Any suggestions to fix this?

When watching DVDs or listening to music from MP3 on the hard drive, the performance is jerky. This happens using WMP and RealPlayer both. I used TaskManager to see if there was any resident stuff and eliminated antispyware and a few other programs, but nothing shows on the list. I ran Process Explorer from SysInternals.com and it shows19-35 % of the CPU capacity from "Interrupts". What can be causing this stuttering or jerky performance.

Recently, my computer made a few beeping sounds, shut itself down and rebooted. Nothing happened. The second time it did it, there was no sound. I have Windows XP. When I start up my iTunes, it says iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/Video playback may not operate properly. With Windows Media Player it says, Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly....

I tried to run pro tools one day and it couldn't read the audio fast enough. I tried running the def rag and it wouldn't analyze or def rag. I tried typing in stuff in the command prompt like i had seen on some websites and installing the def rag inf file but that didn't work either and i also tried disk keeper and it didn't start.

It was configured with windows vista I was using Windows Vista 32bit for 2 months and then switched to 64 bit for the next 2 months. Things were slow, startup, shutdown, normal working etc. Some games ran slow (Halflife 2:Episode One, Company of Heroes), some games ran perfect (Oblivion Elder Scrols, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory). Then I switched back to XP. we have really degraded our thinking level. We guys used to complain about the slow startup and shut down speeds of XP.

I recently had to reload Windows XP on my computer. Since I have done that, my computer has been running very slow. When I scroll down on the screen, it takes a few seconds to refresh the screen rather than being a smooth flow. Also media download speeds are slower. Is there a way to speed up my processor or something, or something I can reset to speed it up? I have a Broadband connection, but I don't think the connection is the problem because there is the same slow speed when I am not on-line.

I've been hunting round for days trying to find out why my computer takes so long to copy a large file. I am trying to backup a virtual PC drive of 8Gb abd it takes 30 minutes or so. This is just making a simple backup copy of the file to the same folder on an SATA drive. The machine is quite new, all windows updates installed, antivirus is up to date etc.

I have two hard drives with different speeds the primary is 7200 the slave 5400, but my computer sometimes will not boot first time in the morning. I have to close it down after my screen turns off to power save. Which is the best way round for the drives to be installed or could it possibly be something entirely different that is causing the problem please. I have no virus or malware on my computer and all automatic updates are applied on windows XP SP2.

Almost any file I download ends up being corrupted. I've downloaded files from respectable download sources (download.com, etc), and it all ends up with some sort of corruption. My BIOS didnt detect my RAM speeds correctly, so I fixed those. Don't think that really would cause any problems either way.

I just got a new computer with an AMD Duron processor, 512 M RAM and Windows XP. Only problem is I've got no audio. I've checked BIOS and sound is enabled but Windows doesn't seem to recognize that the speakers are hooked up. When I tried to play system sounds from the Control Panel, I got an error message that said cannot play sound, your sound card may be in use. The computer was a gift that was bought used and the shop didn't have any documentation with the system. I think this might be a driver issue but I'm not sure how to find out which driver to try.

I reinstalled my OS and all my software, shortly thereafter I noticed I had an issue where any sound that was coming through my headphones was being retransmitted through the mic, with further testing I found that this was not actually the case but rather any sound that would be output is being retransmitted as audio in, even if I had no speakers, headphones or mics connected. I have looked at and experimented with everything I could in every sound settings.
I have tried updated drivers, the only way for me to stop the issue from occurring is to mute the mic in the recording control, but that stops me from using the mic altogether. I need to be able to use my mic without recording anything that I am hearing as well.

First off I use windows XP with the latest service pack. I'm using the onboard sound card on my motherboard Asus striker II extreme.
The volume of my flash player (I first noticed it when trying to view a video on Hulu) but other flash embedded videos won't play sound either. I thought this was a flash problem, and tried the usual fixes uninstalling reinstalling, running the update utility and removing and reinstalling the plugin. Also it likely isn't a browser issue as embedded videos didn't play on either Firefox or Opera.
After restarting my computer after a few uninstalls I noticed my startup music wasn't playing as well. I'm thinking that it might be some registry error as it seems like the music is very quiet instead of muted, and all of the volume levels in the Sounds and Audio Device Properties menu are at the correct levels, and my other media players play music and movies just fine.
I've browsed the forums and haven't seen anyone with a similar problem or a fix, so any help would be greatly apprciated.

I am running a WinXP SP2 machine, with a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS.One day, during a Windows session, my sound just stopped working. I tried to play a song in Winamp, and got the message: "Device not found. Please select another device in configuration. Error code: 88780078." The window title was "DirectSound output v2.2.12 error".Trying to play a song in Windows Media Player yielded a simlar result: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."

> I have Windows XP Media Center Ed with all recommended updates. Recently I have noticed an issue when playing DVDs, the video and audio plays really slowly. This happens in Media Center, Windows Media Player and WinDVD. I have tried different DVDs and have the same problem with all, however playing video or music files from the hard drive is not a problem. just the DVDs!
> Changed video settings from 32 bit to 16 bit
> Made sure hardware acceleration is on
> Made sure write combining is on
> Reinstalled dvd drive
> Can't think of anything else...
I'm experiencing the exact same problem as this person above... anyone know what's causing this problem and how to fix it? I know for a fact that it's strictly a software/driver issue and not related in any way
to hardware. I happened to purchase 2 identical HP PCs and intially both were fine and then after about a week one of them began to exhibit this DVD playback problem. I swapped the hard drives and the problem followed with the hard drive over to the "good" PC and the problem was gone from the "bad" PC. My fear is that eventually this same problem will surface on the "good" hard drive... BTW, neither PC is connected to the Internet (by design, since I'm using them as stand alone workstations).

I do not know how to determine the CPU load of audio on a motherboard how to determine if the sound includes a digital signal processor (DSP). I assume a DSP, especially for older CPUs (600 MHz. or so) is a big improvement because it offloads a lot of processing from the CPU. I am interested only in stereo. How can I know if an add-in sound card with a DSP is actually an improvement? Does the DSP overweigh other issues, eg. does a cheap Mad Dog Prowler 4.1 DSP sound card offer an improvement over the motherboard sound of a Compaq DeskPro ENS/P600? Truth is, I've been looking for but have not seen a treatise on this topic. Does anyone have any links for me to pursue?
