Setup Can't Find Harddrive - Bootable Disk Into CD DVD Slot
Dec 6, 2007
I have just purchased a Campaq Presario laptop v3607TU. It came with only "FreeDos" installed. If I boot up, it goes to the c prompt, and I can see call the directories on the hard drive. inserted my Windows XP bootable disk into the CD/DVD slot, and restarted. It booted from the CD, and the setup files begin to be read. Then I get a message that says, Setup cannot find any hard drives on your computer. The only option is F3 QUIT.

running XP setup from CD to try to do a repair results in "no installed drives found." when placed in another system as a slave, its found as quickly as the master HD is when its alone, and seems to function normally - chkdsk & surface scan find no errors & kaspersky finds no MBR or other problems. i even used TestDisk to rewrite the partition table and MBR to no avail. i'm able to copy off all my files, but would like to know if there are other things i can try. is there a way to XP setup repair / replace boot files on a drive other than C:? or can i use anything from a working system to fix the slave drive? can i ghost the partition and put it on a new HD and run repair there or will the boot problems be copied with the image?

I am attempting to get into my Dell Dimension 8400. It may be I am having problems due to the SP3 update but I cannot get in to see if it is there and uninstall it. (It started going to the blue screen and I cannot do anything from any of the safe mode screens...they are just black with "safemode" in all 4 corners.) I have read up on the SP3 problems on the microsoft forums and found instruction on how to take care of it. It starts with the Recovery Console and the XPCD.
I get in there and it goes directly to "Setup loading files". When it tries to start windows I get this message: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to our computer, and that any disk related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer supplied diagnostic or set up program. Setup cannot continue. To quit

I have a Dell PC. I installed a copy of Windows Vista on it. I don't like it, so I am trying to reinstall XP Home. When I click on the cd drive the XP Home CD is in, it brings up the menu, but the "Install Windows XP" option is grayed out. I try to boot from the disk, but when it is done loading all the things and I tell it I do not want to repair, but to install, it says "setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer" and makes me reboot my computer. Vista still works fine, I know the Hard Drive is working

I have a major problem with my Packard Bell iMedia D815AW home desktop. Ever since I installed a Lite-On DVD-RW into it, it started making a lot of noise (a bit like the sound of a typewriter tapping) and started crashing. I removed the DVD-RW drive, only for the problem to continue. The computer kept crashing (often showing the blue crash screen, other times showing a black 'insert floppy disk' screen, sometimes just restarting itself). Running the Windows disk check utility at start-up would not work - the computer would freeze while the disk scan occured (I tried many times). I ran disk registery programs (ie- Registry Mechanic, etc), anti-virus software, defragmentation, etc. etc. but the problem remained. Yesterday, I decided I would try reinstalling (or restoring?) Windows XP again (with the intention of fixing the problem without deleting my personal files on the computer). However, upon instertion of the disk, Windows XP claimed it could not reinstall, as the Windows version on my computer was too recent. I assumed that the reason for this was that I had installed Windows XP Serice Pack 2 and so the version was too recent for the installation disk. So, I thought I would uninstall service pack 2 and then try to reinstall Windows XP. However, while uninstalling service pack 2, the computer crashed. Since then, whenever I try to startup Windows, the computer restarts after about 30 seconds of loading. I can enter the startup screen which gives you access to entering through Safe Mode, Debugging, etc - however entering through these modes has the same problem though with the computer restarting before reaching Windows. So, I entered the computer BIOS at startup and changed it to load via CD, inserting the Windows XP disk. I tried to use the 'Recovery Console' option, however the error message "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" showed. It then asked me to restart the computer by hitting F3. I then tried to use the Windows install option by restarting the computer and loading the Windows XP disk, but the same "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" message showed. So, i cant load the computer, nor reinstall the software. I dont want to lose all the files on my computer.

I'm going crazy with this issue and I cannot find any possible solutions. I hope someone in here can help me somehow.Let me explain what's my situation. I have a SATA drive (WD 160GB) I had Windows XP installed on my machine until yesterday that I decided to try a beta version of Vista. Now, I want to get rid of Windows Vista and install XP again. However, when I insert my CD to boot, after it loads all the files,etc...It shows me this message Quote: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Quote :Make sure any hard drives are powered on properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3.

After reformating the hard drive, I started re-installing software. With some programs, when I double click the setup.exe, the hour glass comes on and then disappears after a couple seconds and nothing happens. However, if I look in the Task Manager, setup.exe and wowexec.exe are running but have 0 memory usage. I've read some similiar threads, but couldn't find a solution or idea of what the problem is. I'm logged in as Administrator, or it's not that. I'm running WinXP. I remember getting an error at one point saying "the Win 16 Subsystem may be unstable"

My computers motherboard got fried a while back so I got a new one installed from a pc shop. They also reinstalled xp for me. Been working fine up until recently when I had to update norton. Once I installed my new norton and tried updating its protection it completely collapsed my xp so I had to try and re install xp mysellf only to find the same symptoms that many other xp installers appear to be suffering from. On installation process my hard drive was not detected. I tried other routes such as changing the bios settings disable sata control in the peripheral settings and I also tried making my own xp install cd including the drivers needed for the xp installl to be able to detect the hard drive but was unsuccesssful.

We got a hand me down gateway for daughter and we had to reformat the hard-drive. I came to find out was missing the third disk on Gateway's "System Restoration Kit" disks. They no longer provide them anymore, since out of warranty. I was going to just install full version of XP (just had Win ME, when reformatted). It's telling me "No Hard disk error". I tried going into BIOS, hitting F10 on boot up. But there's no Sata settings in my bios. It's a "Phoenix Bios" system.

I mistakenly launched XP Setup and want to know how to stop it from progressing further. I have another XP installed on another virtual disk. Rebooting from there allowed me delete the Setup files. Or so I thought ! The main XP installation however continues to try to launch Setup. Just about whatever I do, it ends in tears. My question is how do I stop XP on this disk from thinking it has to launch Setup? I dont want to reinstall XP, as that will involve a huge amount of work to recreate my environment.

i have xp pro sp2 on a disc and when i try to install it, i get to the partition screen and it shows i have only one drive, with 2gb on it, in FAT format, which is my USB drive i have plugged in,then below it, it says theres an unknown disk in there, no drive is plugged in (or something like that). So, it wont let me reformat my main drive and install xp on it. I have vista x64 already on it and i wanna go back to XP. When i use my Vista install disk, it can find the disk and format it easily. So would it be possible to format it using the vista disk, then restart with xp disk in and boot from there?

I have two computers in my home connected through a hard wired router. One uses Windows XP Home Edition (my wife's computer) and one uses Windows XP Pro. The PC with the Pro edition has two logical drives. One is very small (3GB) and I only use it to back up my other drives. It also uses Windows XP Pro as the OS. This is my E: drive. From my C: drive, I can 'see' my other PC (my wife's computer) which I want to back up. However, from my E: drive, I cannot 'see' my other PC. Therefore, I can't map it to my backup software. I CAN ping my wife's computer soI know it can be seen that way. This is probably a quirk between the Home Edition and the Pro edition.

Im trying to run windows xp on the sata drive,I have installed xp via bootable disk, but when attempting to load xp a blue screen pops up and says "windows was stopped from loading to prevent damage to your system" and then following an error number with lots of zeroes and threes. I have plugged the SATA drive into another computer and was able to format, partition and add and use files from it. So theres a 70% chance its not the hardrive itself.

Too much junk in my Hard Disk and registry so I did a complete new install of WindowsXP Home. As I was doing this and then installing all of my software I had not realized that my flash drive was plugged in and WinXP then named my Hard Disk drive F: So everything is now on drive F: and working well. In the new install, XP created my Hard Disk NTFS. Now, I used ghost to clone my Hard Disk. XP called the backup drive C: Backup finished fine, BUT, when I switch drives and put the backup in only, the computer will not boot up. I get to the blue Welcome screen and that is where is sits. I tried the ghost GhReboot.exe program, but no help.

That way, if the new BIOS doesn't work, I can Flash the old BIOS onto my mb,. A WinXP Pro SP2 Command Prompt will not permit me to execute Format AS. So, how can I create a bootable floppy disk under WinXP Pro SP2?
