Setup Cant Find HardDrive - Repair Reboot Files On Drive
May 6, 2008running XP setup from CD to try to do a repair results in "no installed drives found." when placed in another system as a slave, its found as quickly as the master HD is when its alone, and seems to function normally - chkdsk & surface scan find no errors & kaspersky finds no MBR or other problems. i even used TestDisk to rewrite the partition table and MBR to no avail. i'm able to copy off all my files, but would like to know if there are other things i can try. is there a way to XP setup repair / replace boot files on a drive other than C:? or can i use anything from a working system to fix the slave drive? can i ghost the partition and put it on a new HD and run repair there or will the boot problems be copied with the image?

Aug 18, 2010My computers motherboard got fried a while back so I got a new one installed from a pc shop. They also reinstalled xp for me. Been working fine up until recently when I had to update norton. Once I installed my new norton and tried updating its protection it completely collapsed my xp so I had to try and re install xp mysellf only to find the same symptoms that many other xp installers appear to be suffering from. On installation process my hard drive was not detected. I tried other routes such as changing the bios settings disable sata control in the peripheral settings and I also tried making my own xp install cd including the drivers needed for the xp installl to be able to detect the hard drive but was unsuccesssful.

Find Stuff On Harddrive After Re-partitioning
Mar 13, 2008I have just bought a new hard drive, partitioned it, and had some stuff copied to it.I then deleted the partitions, and set some new ones up (was changing the size of the partitions). I havent put anything on the disk yet.Then, i realise i want some of the stuff (new emails i just received using mozilla) that is on my new disk, prior to me changing the partitions.Is there any way of checking what is on the new disk? I assume windows hasnt actually written over the stuff that i just put on ther

Cant Find My Harddrive Phoenix BIOS
Sep 5, 2010We got a hand me down gateway for daughter and we had to reformat the hard-drive. I came to find out was missing the third disk on Gateway's "System Restoration Kit" disks. They no longer provide them anymore, since out of warranty. I was going to just install full version of XP (just had Win ME, when reformatted). It's telling me "No Hard disk error". I tried going into BIOS, hitting F10 on boot up. But there's no Sata settings in my bios. It's a "Phoenix Bios" system.

May 17, 2007i have xp pro sp2 on a disc and when i try to install it, i get to the partition screen and it shows i have only one drive, with 2gb on it, in FAT format, which is my USB drive i have plugged in,then below it, it says theres an unknown disk in there, no drive is plugged in (or something like that). So, it wont let me reformat my main drive and install xp on it. I have vista x64 already on it and i wanna go back to XP. When i use my Vista install disk, it can find the disk and format it easily. So would it be possible to format it using the vista disk, then restart with xp disk in and boot from there?

Dec 6, 2007I have just purchased a Campaq Presario laptop v3607TU. It came with only "FreeDos" installed. If I boot up, it goes to the c prompt, and I can see call the directories on the hard drive. inserted my Windows XP bootable disk into the CD/DVD slot, and restarted. It booted from the CD, and the setup files begin to be read. Then I get a message that says, Setup cannot find any hard drives on your computer. The only option is F3 QUIT.

The PC with the Pro edition has two logical drives. One is very small (3GB) and I only use it to back up my other drives. It also uses Windows XP Pro as the OS. This is my E: drive. From my C: drive, I can 'see' my other PC (my wife's computer) which I want to back up. However, from my E: drive, I cannot 'see' my other PC. Therefore, I can't map it to my backup software. I CAN ping my wife's computer soI know it can be seen that way. This is probably a quirk between the Home Edition and the Pro edition.

It seam to start after I put in 8gig's of ram,I ran memtest86 for over 3 hours and everything came out fine with that.I reloaded in windows x64 and that didn't help.Sometimes when windows starts I'll get the blue screen of death,but it go's by so fast I can't read it,also when booting at the loading screen it will just sit there,the light on the pc doesn't blink and rebooting won't work.I have to shut the pc pown and turn off all power to it for a bit then windows will fire up again with on probs.I know it's not over heating, I have a 120mm fan blowing right on it

New MB Without Re-Installing OS / Repair Wont Work?
Feb 25, 2008Had customer mb go out, and after putting in a new mb, windows blue screens on boot (of course..was expecting it). Usually do a re-install when replacing a mb, but in this case, the customer has some software that cannot be replaced, so my question is...can you swap mb's in a system and not have to re-install and loose data? I can get to safe mode, so thats a step in the right direction, and the windows "Repair" unfortunately dosent work.

Aug 22, 2007Did a repair install, everything is working except windows updates, it says I have updates and I can click on custom and it shows them when I click to install them it acts like it will then a box comes up and say they all failed. I turned off auto updates and went to the site and click on custom and they came up but the same thing won't install did it with express install to and its the same,. Any one know what could be wring, one update it needs is the windows validation update I know the disk is valid it came with the machine and it retook the product number when I did the repair install.

Jun 1, 2008Im running windows XP and I decided to partion my harddrive into 2. One for windows and one for general stuff.
I left my computer off for a week and when I returned my "general" partion of hard disk space has disappeared, and when opening programs it "cant find the link." I have no idea why its done this.

Aug 29, 2006I know what to do but i am bit curious on the formatting bit. I have 2 hard drives, Harddrive "A" has all the window/program files as well as other programs like games and documents. Harddrive B is where i keep all my big files like videos and movies of course i want to format harddrive A but the thing is that harddrive is split in to 3 drives (C:, G:, F. I dont mind formating the c drive since it is all windows/program files but i dont really want to get rid of the G/F drive. I kno you can format the harddrive through the installation process of windows but i was wondering if it is possilbe to just to format the C: during that process or does it only format the whole harddrive

Oct 1, 2009I got a trojan that attached to my browser. I managed to get rid of it by system restore.A few days later I noticed I only had 127 GB of my 300GB harddrive showing.I did manage to find the missing space though Disk Management. It was showing 170GB as unallocated space. I named it E: and formatted it.It now shows in My Computer as New Volume E: When I open E:I get 2 folders, Recycler and System volume Information. SVI will not open. It gives me an error, ESystem Volume Information is not accessable, access is denied.I am trying to find a way to either resize E: to 1GB or smaller and move that 169 GB back to C: or get rid of E: altogether and put all the missing space back on C:

May 23, 2005about two yrs ago my dad made a massive mistake of making two partitions on my laptop, and giving the C: only 2gigs of the partition, and the D: 28-29gigs. I have the formatting disks, but it never goes to a screen asking me about my partitions, it just formats everything on my C: (my default drive), but keeps everything on my D: intact (games, files, etc.).

Feb 19, 2005Recently upgraded my laptop to windows XP from ME. I first replaced my 5 gig hard drive with a 20 gig hard drive. I added another 128 memory module for a total of 256. For an old machine it really hums now. Three minor problems are bugging me though. 1. I lost the sounds from my modem. The modem works fine except for no sound. I assume that the sound is from the unimodem half-duplex audio device that is located on the Lucent winmodem. I have checked everything. The system says that it is working correctly. I cannot even find the driver for this on microsoft . I thought if I could load a new driver it might work. No such thing. 2. System restore didn't work until I erased all the memory points and reloaded the program. Now if I open siystem restore and click on "settings" or "help" System restore shuts down. I assume it is corrupted and would like to reload it.

Aug 24, 2005Problems started was when i updated my Zone Alarm firewall, windows works absolutely fine no problems what so ever, then next time i reboot it does the same, this time problems are non-stop until about 10% then fine from there on in, then when it finishes repairing the drive it gets stuck at repairing unreadable security descriptions date stream.
It also said whilst recovering orphaned files insufficient disk space to recover lost files. It stopped for a while then carried on. After scan disk it restarted and wouldn't load windows, just got stuck on windows loading screen forever, eventually 15+ minutes i pressed reset as there was no disk activity.
