I want to be able to make my pci internal modem (com3) dial a phone number and remain connected when i close the dos window then open a program that will talk directly to com3.Closest i can come is "echo atdt >com3" When i tried "echo adt0,12345 > com3" still no dial tone or off hook operation just a click.
When I close a program the desktop icon remains highlighted, until I mouse click elsewhere on the desktop. This only presents a real problem when I log off of my dial up server and the icon remains highlighted. If I forget to un-highlight it, my phone won't ring, although my answering machine will pick up the call.
I have G speedbooster router and setup MAC address and WPA with password. My laptop can access fine. I have emachines t2882 with xp and USB wireless g speedbooster adapter. I can access internet when plugging in computer lan to lan on router. When using wireless usb, I key in code and says I am connected and green lights show, but when pulling up explorer, it says no connected? Device manager shows device is working properly.I tried setting up automatically assign IP's on the computer and got same result, and put in specific IP I have assigned from the router to this computer with same results as well.Again, looks like I am connected, but explorer does not seem to recognize I am connected.
I uses a laptop as a workstation. i uses it to get online from here at the school and at home. Recently, i can surf fine from work but when gets home when i plugs into network and gets all the signs of connectivity but when using the internet explorer, i only gets the "Work Offline" option and is unable to use the internet. I have a wireless connection set up as well as the regular ethernet connection. I usually only uses the ethernet port and rarely uses the wireless connection but both are running simultaneously.
the dial up worked fine until i took my computer to the high speed net at work. when i got the computer back i hooked it back up and dialed up it connected then i tried to view my webpage. it said page cant be displayed. my downloader was disconnected to. i had all the signs i was not connected to the internet but i was.
When I turn on my computer the green light will come on for a second and go right back out. The fans keep running and the cd drives will open and close, but the monitor screen remains black and it tells me no signal.
I am trying to install xp pro on a laptop. The laptop is a gateway M465-E, with a centrino duo cpu. I'm using a usb A: drive to install the sata drivers for it by hitting F6 at start of install. This works fine and reformat and start of install work great. But then the installation hangs at 34 minutes remaining. I realize this is a known issue with XP. what hardware to disconnect in order to get a clean install.
HP pavilion a1210n XP service sp3 Does not stay in standby mode for more than 1 minute. Removed batteries from mouse so it did not affect standbby mode.
I have 3 print queues that are retaining the printed jobs in the queue and every now and again the damn thing prints all the job again. I have checked that the keep printed jobs button is NOT checked/selected, but the queue acts ilke it is selected to keep printed jobs. I have 125 printer queues and only 3 act like this and they are set up identical to the others. I have reconfigured this twice on all 3 and they still act like they are set to keep printed jobs in the queue.Anyone seen this and know of a solution, on the Microsoft site I am seeing posts but not a single reply about how to either run a job to clear them out a couple times a day or fix this so they act as configured. To NOT keep printed jobs in the queue.
I have noticed that sometimes when I look at the task manager that there are programs there that I have terminated. For the most part they are not using CPU time, but are still on the list. The exception is iexplore.exe which is using 50% of CPU time (dual core machine) and causing the system to become unresponsive. I have tried using the right click, terminate process on these entries and nothing happens. They still remain in the list.
I have tried to restart computer and it will not restart. It goes through some motions of attempting to end unresponsive programs, but then nothing happens. The only way out is to hold down the power button until the computer shuts off which is supposed to be a bad way to turn it off.
Sometime after downloading a recent Microsoft (Automatic) Update, I now find the Outlook and Word Programs remaining resident in memory after using Outlook (memory as viewed via Windows Task Manager). Sometimes, the programs gobble-up as much as 150K of RAM. I have 1.0 Gb of RAM on the machine. I find that I now routinely approach the 1.0 Gb threshold. And while this has not been a real problem in terms of system resources or performance, I find little reason to leave these programs resident in memory. I'm at a loss for how to keep these programs from commandeering a full-time presence in RAM. How to I prevent these programs from remaining resident in memory? I've combed through the configuration settings within each program, but with no clue as to user-control for this behavior.
I dont know if i've got this in the right forum but i've got a WinXP Pro Machine so thought i'd try it here. The problem is that my print queue seems to retain the print jobs although the print jobs have already been printed out (i've seen it retain jobs from 5 days ago). I happens from all sorts of programs. My PC is acting a print server (ie, the printer is connected to my PC via Parallel and i have shared my install of this printer). In the print queue, the status indicates "sent to printer" and Pages "x/x - eg 3/3" however the print jobs remains in the queue and do not disappear unless i manually do a "cancel". If i were to turn off and then on the PC, all these print jobs will print out again without any user interaction. So, can anyone tell me if this is a driver issue or is it something to do with the printer or Parallel port configuration. As far as i know, i've got "bi-directional support" selected but i'm still to find out what modes i've got parallel set to eg. EPP or ECP or both.
seems like with every new update done to Windows XP Home (SP2 + all current updates), I develop a new little annoyance.A few updates back, I noticed that when I change file associations to a specific program opening up my .jpgs, .tifs, and .gifs, from the default (Windows Picture & Fax Viewer), the newly-associated file does open the file, but the icons for those files remains as the default Windows Picture & Fax Viewer.(I suspect at the bottom of many of problems MAY be the installation of my Lexmark printer -- but then, it's a convenient scapegoat for everything!
having trouble with the mobo CMOS settings and ended up rmaing the mobo and the memory. Well i got the new mobo and memory is it loads. When it goes to load XP it gets NTLDR not found or something to that degree and says press ctrl+alt+del to restart. My hd has a partial install of xp and i havent been able do the full install. Was wondering how to do the full install now. I tried popping the xp cd in and it doesnt read it, it just gives me the NTLDR message and wont do anything.
When I turn on my computer, I get a message that says explorer.exe has closed down and when I try to start Task Manager, it closes that, too. I'm on the computer right now, but I'm using an Ubuntu Live CD.
Since, two days ago, I'm dealing with this problem. When I'm trying to re-open Explorer.exe, it closed automaticaly and then restart and closed again .I have an updated Panda antivirus, CA Yahoo! Anti-Spyware, and a Microsoft Windows XP Mediacenter 2005 that recently (after that the problem occurs) updated from the Update.Microsoft.com.I've checked my system with panda, and norton AV, but they didn't detect any viruses or anything else.
On my Toshiba laptop running W-XP SP2 it keeps getting 'locked up'. It locks up on shut down, booting, and launching programs. I had to wipe out my hard disk because I had to use the recover disk that came with this Toshiba junk Right now it is locked up with the Spysweeper screen up an the error message is "THIS PROGRAM CANNOT BE CLOSED BECAUSE IT IS LOCKED BY THE SYSTEM"!!! Got that when I did Ctrl/Alt/Del. When it locks on shut down I get same message, and same when locks on boot. Only way out seems to be UNPLUG!!! I've already lost everything anyways so it don't matter. Is this a TOSHIBA issue or a W-XP Home Edition SP2 issue?
I am running Win XP service pack 1 and have been putting off installing service pack 2 until today. I have made a backup of my system and proceeded to instal sp2.
The install process fails fairly early on with the message:
The file c:windowsapppatchdrvmain.sdb is open or in use by another program.
A virus problems that have been sorted professionally and I now have up to date anti-virus, adware and firewall software. Computer was 'cleaned' it no longer retains info after applications are closed. This particularly relates to web pages where settings for individual sites are not saved after closure. This was the job of 'cookies'. I have my settings to allow cookies to be installed. Is it safer not to have such settings saved
My msconfig, task manager and my device manager do not stay open. I have already copied and renamed my msconfig and my task manager so I can view them but I would like my computer to be back to normal. Below is my hijack log.
I am having trouble with my temp files. I have it fixed that they are suppose to dump on their own when the browser is closed but not only is it not doing that, it is not deleting when I do it manually. I will delete the temp files and cookies, and go out and open it back up and there they are! My avg says I am virus free.
Generic Host Process for WIN32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.Seems many people are getting this error message. I've seen that both audio drivers and HP drivers may be to blame. Seen solutions for WIA and DEP changes and also to download the latest .NET framework.Error occurs for me after reboot (always) typically accompanied by a "Error The instruction at "xxxxxxxx" referenced memory at "xxxxxxxxx". The memory could not be read. Click on OK to terminate the program.
Bought new game software and ready to install. Placed disc in drive and bang, within seconds receive an error message reading: an error has occurred while running setup. Please make sure you have finished any previous setups and closed other applications..." Then the details of this Error 5003 goes as follows:
Error Code:-5003 : 0x5 Error Information: >SetupDLLSetupDLL.cpp (1964) PAPP:Star Wars? Knights of the Old Republic? II: The Sith Lords(TM) PVENDOR:LucasArts PGUID:629F65FB-7F3C-4D66-A1C0-20722744B7B6 $10.0.0.159 @Windows XP Service Pack 2 (2600) IE 6.0.2900.2180
Now, to make a long story short...Did a safe boot...nothing...closed all running applications and software using task manager when doing so..(closing anti-virus, firewalls disabled and spyware detectors and all). still nothing. Updated ATI driver...nothing.........

Several PCs of my LAN including the Server has this problem this week, like a virus.
I installed a Hotfix from Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894391 for windows XP SP3 and Windows Server 2003 SP2 but this issue still bothering me.
I have a web cam in my house and a web cam in my mother's house. We both use Windows Xp,is there any way we can see each other and stay connected through web cam? Is there any free product we can use?
I am using Windows XP Home on my laptop and XP Pro on my desktop, both connected by a lan. When I connect to my ISP, and the 'Connected' Icon appears, (using either PC's modem) The connected PC hangs or freezes for up to 13 minutes. I can move the mouse pointer around, but no clicks of either mouse or keyboard appear to have any effect, not even CTRL+ALT+DELETE.After some time the programs I have been clicking on do appear and the problem seems to have gone, until next time I restart the PC and connect via modem. This is only when using modem connections. I have no problem with broadband, and it makes no difference whether or not I am connected to LAN. I am using Norton Antivirus, my definitions are up to date. I have also connected to 2 Internet sites who scanned my machines for viruses but did not find any. Any ideas? Obviously the problem does not seem serious but it is very annoying to have to wait 10 or more minutes every time I connect, before I can go anywhere, wouldn't be so bad if I could play a game while waiting, but as I say, nothing works during this time.I had posted a similar thread on the Internet and e-mail section, but at that time I thought it was just the Browser and client would not start. I have since noticed that it is everything.
My friend has a VPR Matrix Desktop (2.6 Ghz, 512 megs Ram) with Home Edition that would not power up. I replaced the power supply and it powered up fine. It booted up and worked fine until I started trying to remove spyware. My friend said it would just reboot for no reason. It'd die, reboot, die, reboot constantly. I think this may have burned up the power supply - it probably did this while he wasn't around (maybe during the night).... anyways that doesn't matter.
I was able to get into safe mode and thought I had the issue diagnosed. I wasn't able to work on it for a week or so and when I booted it back up, it worked fine. I backed up all of his important files and then started working on cleaning it up some (it's slow, I don't know if it's the lack of ram or spyware). When I reconnected it to my dsl, it worked fine for a minute, it was a little slow connecting to the net but then I recieved a "Error, run dll as an app" message. It continued to run for a few minutes afterwards then it started crash/rebooting like it had earlier................
I was doing some detailed drawings in photoshop, and I also had a generic photo up in photoshop as well. I went to save my drawings, but apparently accidentally saved the photo under the drawins name and then closed the program. This morning I discovered the bad news. Is there a way to get that drawing back? I do not know if it was ever saved before.
