I am running Win XP service pack 1 and have been putting off installing service pack 2 until today. I have made a backup of my system and proceeded to instal sp2.
The install process fails fairly early on with the message:
The file c:windowsapppatchdrvmain.sdb is open or in use by another program.
Close all other applications and then click retry
A virus problems that have been sorted professionally and I now have up to date anti-virus, adware and firewall software.
Computer was 'cleaned' it no longer retains info after applications are closed. This particularly relates to web pages where settings for individual sites are not saved after closure.This was the job of 'cookies'. I have my settings to allow cookies to be installed. Is it safer not to have such settings saved
Bought new game software and ready to install. Placed disc in drive and bang, within seconds receive an error message reading: an error has occurred while running setup. Please make sure you have finished any previous setups and closed other applications..." Then the details of this Error 5003 goes as follows:

Now, to make a long story short...Did a safe boot...nothing...closed all running applications and software using task manager when doing so..(closing anti-virus, firewalls disabled and spyware detectors and all). still nothing. Updated ATI driver...nothing.........
Once I installed sp3, I could not get past the windows loading screen, so I started in safemode and uninstalled sp3 that way. My question is, does uninstalling sp3 remove sp2 as well. I can not see sp2 under add/remove programs, but my windows update history says I downloaded sp2 last May.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe problem is that each time I turn the pc on, if I want to access the internet, I must right click on My Computer, then Manage and then Service and Applications and then Double Click DHCP Client. It is set for Autostart but something is wrong because I have to manually start it up. I did a quick check on other items that had no status and they seem to be in this file: 'System32svchost.exe -k netscvs'. The tech guy from my ISP told me that it could be a problem with my XP disc? I can't see how. When my friend installed this hardware he also installed an extra hard drive, around 6 gig for things I might want on a backup incase something happens to my main hard drive. He formatted both hard drives and put Windows 98 on the main drive, not aware that you could do a clean install with XP.Now when my computer starts up I have to choose either Windows XP Home or Windows if I choose Windows nothing happens. Just a blinking cursor. My main concern right now is that I have to manuallly start up the DHCP Client if I want to go online.I went into the BIOS looking for answers.

I move them to a separate folder for safe keeping for about a week, then, if all is well, I delete them. I don't think I've deleted the IE7 SP, but I don't know what the SP number is.

I have downloaded it and it gets to final stages of instalation (performing cleaning) and then I get an error message saying that it could not complete installation. I have a proper copy of win xp and have used it for ages and registered it. The problems came when I got a new motherboard and it asked me to register windows which I did successfully. Well, I noticed that my older computer hadn't been updated in a while so I downloaded/installed all the new XP updates, including SP2. Well as soon as I did that, Windows would not boot. So I turned off auto-reboot when it encounters an error. Even worse. Now I can't even go into safe mode, unless it's the command line. So I decided, what the heck, I need to clean up anyways. And I try to reinstall windows, my CD won't load. So now I'm stuck with a nice blue paperweight that won't boot windows and I can't boot the XP CD. If anyone has encountered this problem, and fixed it, please reply. If not, I'm getting Redhat right now, and going to install that, format, uninstall and put XP back in. I was just hoping for an easier way out.
