I have a problem with my Dell Latitude D800 laptop. I reformatted the HDD yesterday, and re-installed Windows XP. Now the responce time is even worse than before I did the HDD wipe. View 10 RepliesI recently formated my hard drive and reinstalled XP operating system. I no longer have sound on my computer. When I go to control panel- sounds it says no driver found. I have a Unimodem Half Duplex Audio Device. I tried reinstalling the driver from the cd and the control panel still shows no driver installed. One time I tried using the resource cd and the sounds worked in both speakers.

View 7 Replies View Relatedi have a dell dimension e310. 2.9 ghz. 4 gigs of ram. windows xp... umm so just recently we took it into the shop and they re-installed the operating system. because we thought it was infected with virus' or w/e.ever since, its been running slow. it boots up ok...and for the first few minutes its running...not fast. but not too slow. and then it kinda just freezes. i can move the mouse but if im running windows explorer(havent been able to re-install firefox) it kinda just sticks there. i installed norton 360 and it says the pc i running fine. i dont know what to do about it. i have to wait an hour just so windows explorer can close..very frustrating...

View 14 Replies View Relatedmy computer has been running incredibly slow, so I decided to reinstall windows professional and start all over. it works a little better now, but it is still slow on start up and in performance and all the features seem to be larger as if it were in safe-mode, but it is in normal mode. I defragmented the hard drive, checked for errors and even cleaned out the dust inside the computer itself (I don't know if that has any affect on its performance.).also one of the cd drives doesnt seem to work well.it cant find the disk sometimes, could that effect how the xp was installed? i also can't seem to get the internet (broadband) to set up

View 24 Replies View RelatedI was just experiencing a little minor problem with some pop-ups and last Saturday I decided to backup my files and format my comp.The first time I just formatted the C drive and left D, E, and F untouched. It took me 3 hours to install Windows XP. So the second time I wiped all partitions and make new C and D drives.. this time it took about 2 1/2 hours. THe last time I borrowed my friend's copy of Windows XP and reinstall it, formatted all my drives again, and took about 2 1/2 hrs again. Then this time I decided to reinstall/update all my drivers, windows update, etc Use ad-aware, Spybot, CWS Shredder, and Ewido to scan my comp.. nothing. Installed BitDefender and scanned, nothing.I'm running P4 2.0GHz with 512 RAM. I checked the CPU temp in the BIOS Menu it says 40C. I'm currently trying to run Windows Registry Repair Pro to see if any registry problem.. But my comp is running so slow. Start up takes forever and running programs take even longer. The interesting thing is that my CPU usage is hanging around 100% most of the time, no matter when it's right after I reinstall my windows or when i'm running programs. Please help, it's been 2 days and I can't solve this on my own.

Hardware is 2.0 Celeron, 1 gig Ram, 64MB Nvidia Video Card, PS/2 keyboard and mouse, HD's are 250GIG Western Digital with 4 partitions and 27% free on the XP Boot and 200GIG Western Digital with 2 Partitions. I have a Lite-On DVD +-R/RW drive and a 3.5 floppy. I am setup with a Duel-Boot configuration Win 98/XP. I do not have a paging file.
My problem occures after I hit enter for the Select Operating System page. I Hit enter, Win XP proceeds to load. After I hit enter and Windows loads the blue welcome screen 1 minute has passed. I hear the Welcome Audio music, however blue welcome screen is still there for 30 more seconds. Next is my picture that I have as my background that is shown without icons for 1minute 21seconds. Windows now displays my icons on my desktop. the icons blink at minute 4. after 4 minutes and 51 seconds I am able to use my computer. At bootup I only have 43 programs running and 357MB of the 1 gig ram taken.
What I have done:
1) I have started in safe mode and defraged my PC, 0% frag on all partitions except a drive that isn't currently plugged in and it was 1% because it's my backup drive (not worried about that 1%)
2)Removing all connected Componets and rebooted, same problem.
3) I have tried using msconfig.exe and setting the startup selection as Normal- it's defaulted to Selective. Tried reducing my startup programs. ....
I'm building a new machine for a friend using WinXP Pro system builder's edition. It is my understanding that this edition can only be installed on a single machine - and even changing the hard drive or major hardware component will de-activate it. In the process of trying to fix a BIOS issue, the dang thing reset the SATA controller from the RAID 1 I had setup back to normal SATA. I finally got that fixed - but it somewhat hosed the Windows install - it wants to do diskcheck every time it boots and always find some errors - but if I bypass the diskcheck it boots fine - but there are other problems. if the system builders edition can be reinstalled on the exact same machine with the exact same hardware - or would I have to buy yet another copy?

My PC is about 2+ years old with 1 gig of Ram and a 2.13 gig processor. I have all the current updates for XP. I use Ad-Aware, Spybot and ESET NOD32 Antivirus. All programs are updated at least weekly and run weekly. I have also downloaded CCleaner and used it a couple of times.

It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.
Some time ago I booted up my computer,to find that my XP switched to Windows classic style,I didn't take it seriously so I went to properties to change when I get an error message saying there is a problem with run32.dll,not only that,but the visual styles can't load I assume,becuase of run32.dll,so now I'm stuck with the piece of s*** style.

Everything appears to be fine.I log on to Windows Live OneCare to use their "Safety Scanner" to, as they say, check for PC health issues and optimize performance. Mind you, the site recommends users log on once a month for the full service scan. As you know, the scan includes the removal of what it refers to as invalid registry entries. "Oh boy," right? Got a fatal error message and everything locked up. I ended up shutting down and when I turned the computer on again it said no operating system found. Where did I screw up?
This is a six year old Sony, XP, AMD 1.0Ghz. Everything was working at the time I tried the System Recovery EXCEPT I was constantly getting low space messages for drive C. I have no files on this drive and very little software. It is a 20G hard drive partioned into two 10G partitions.
Should I ever use one of the utility programs to wipe my hard drive completely, how do I reinstall Windows XP since the CD driver has been erased? How can you reinstall an operating system that is on CD when you have no driver for the CD player? The reason I am asking these questions is that I might want to give my computer to friend and I want my stuff off of the hard drive and my friend to be able to use the computer.

Then, when it actually starts installing whatever game I try, Winamp plays at half speed, pops and hiccups, and becomes unlistenable. Firefox takes between 10 and 30 seconds to load an instance, and typing is slow, and shows up on screen in bursts. Furthermore, even my System sounds (right clicking, for example) become slow and broken.
