Virus Hit Computer/ Slow Operating Speed/ Reinstall Windows?
Dec 12, 2005
laptop started operating very slow when I tried opening various MS office softwares. took my computer to a local computer store and they told me that because of a virus I needed to have the entire Windows XP reinstalled. However, due to a high price I haven't been able to have my computer fixed. I already have the Windows XP Pro server pack one on a CD. how i can go about reinstalling Windows XP Pro on my laptop? And is there anything i should be careful about while installing the software?
My laptop is an hp pavillion dv4000 version 2002(w/SP3), and I got it almost 3-4 years ago. It has, as expected, gotten slow over the years. But now, it's EXTREMELY slow. As in, it takes like 10 minutes to start up. It takes several minutes for my internet browser to pop up. Doing more than one thing at once is impossible. And I constantly have "Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low" popping up...from doing even the simplest tasks on it.
I really like this laptop and don't want to purchase a new one. I want to completely wipe off everything from the laptop and then reinstall windows XP so that I can start afresh. Problem is, I don't have the CD, my laptop never came with it. The manual says it already came with the recovery feature pre-installed.
I would like to know if it's possible to have a decent experience on windows xp with a so limited computer like mine and if so what can I change or improve to make this computer run less slowly. Here's my computer specs: IBM Personal Computer 300GLType: 6563-A2F,Pentium III 728Mhz, 128Ram, HD 20GB,Video Card: Savage 4 16MB, Windows Xp SP3 Fresh install since today,Non-ACPI compatible computer,Forced HAL installation in Standard PC Mode.
what do you do if you run say: kaspersky internet security pro 2009 and it doesnt find spyware or a virus...but the machine is still running slow.its got 1GB ram, dual core is this right?1 run a defrag 2 run a windows repair
I just built a new computer, the startup was very quick. But after I installed some video editing software, the startup seems extremely slow. Is the software I installed responsible for this?
I downloaded firefox browser yesterday but when ever i try to start it it comes on for about 5 secs then goes off. I thought i must of done somthing wrong when i installed it so i downloaded netscape to see if that would work and guess what that is doing the same so it has got to be somthing to do with my pc.
I've scanned with spy sweeper and adaware, here is my hijackthis log. My computer runs slow at the start, and was wondering what I could take out of the registry.fyi, I use sbc yahoo dsl, have windows xp, and it is a hp pavillion a434n.
The comp's CPU usage is almost always running at 100%. I can see this in the task manager and the fans always seem to be running on overdrive (very loud). Sometimes it'll calm down and usage will run at a normal level but this is only for a short time and then it jumps back up and fans as well. I thought at first it might be my AVG antivirus but i've removed and still have the same problem.
I have tried just about every thing to speed my computer up. I have ATT High speed ,but it acts like dial-up . I have talk to att and they said every thing is work fine but i know its now it freezes up have of the time or it crashes .I have spend 200.00 dollars to have it debug. I need help
Saw an earlier post where flavallee was addressing this problem and wondered if someone would assist me in trying to get my computer back to close to the speed it was. It has really slowed down the past couple of months.
XP Home reboots in the 3+ minute range. Once it gets to the 'Starting Windows XP' screen, it loads fine. Some damnthing is hanging.MY comp is running slow. Expeciially on the net. Task manager is reporting no excess network use. IE 6 acts like it's on a 56k modem. I use Mozilla FireFox, which runs fine, but my wife is a IE 6 fanatic. Shareaza and WinMX load slowly and take a minute or more to change tabs. BitTornado (latest versions all) loads and runs fine, but seems to hang after an hour or so. It stops updating speeds, seeds, peers, etc. It also closes slowly. Once I get online, the comp slams on the brakes. Mozilla is the only app that seems unaffected. Sygate is also logging a lot of portscans. 7 in the in the last hour or so. All from the same IP address.
My friend did a windows recovery after he had a black screen when starting windows. Both IE and Firefox had slow connectivity yet I had him do a speedtest with speakeasy.net and it showed good speeds. He says the longer the computer is on, the slower is a surfing the internet. CPU usage is normal.
internet speeds: 2500kbps/400kbps
Could the recovery have messed with his computer networking drivers? He used a gateway recovery disk. His computer is either a gateway or dell computer.
My computer was going slow and pop-ups like crazy. So I backed up all of my information and got a new install disk from Dell. Heres the problem, When installing it keeps getting hung up on 36, 16, or 9 mins. It will not pass that point. I have exhausted all of my options, I restart checked all the cables, drained the power by pulling the cord and holding the power button then plugging it back in. Then called dell and they walked me through wiping the HD clean, by starting up in DOS and walking me through the steps. Well did all that and started install again, and once again it got hung up on 23 mins
I had to reinstall windows after a virus took out all of the essential .dll files and the computer wouldn't start up, I now have a problem with some of my hardware not working. When I go into device manager the following have yellow question marks beside them:
ethernet controller multimedia audio controller video controller (VGA compatible).
The computer itself is an XC cube edition (not sure if that's a brand or not). It was supplied for a disabled student if that helps? It runs windows XP service pack 2.
I recently got my computer back from the computer fixing guy (because I killed the master boot record and I had no idea how to fix it) and it's a lot slower than it was before. It was a clean install of XP, and the only difference I can see is that the computer magician installed PC-cillin on it. It's not any specific program that's slow now either. Firefox, IE, Unreal Tournament, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Civilization 4, all the stuff I usually use is equally slow
My computer is running very slowly. I can't help but think that something is running in the background that I can't see. Occasionally I get an error message saying my virtual memory is low. Below is a hijack this log.
My computer used to run fast and now it doesnt... I have ran the defrag, disk cleanup, Ad-adware SE Personal, Spybot Search and destroy, and avg, cleaned up all problems I could find, and I am still unable to multitask... at any great speed... this may be normal, but just wondering if there are things going on I dont know about
I have recently downloaded a free program and was going to install it. I ran it, and then my antivirus blocked it because it contained a virus. I have been looking for the program for a very long time, and I was angry that it didn't work. So I allowed the infected program and then the it disappeared. The icon disappeared. I knew I shouldn't have done it, but nothing bad happened to me for about a day. Then, my laptop was slower than normal, internet connection was slow (I'm right next to the router too), and I was getting pop-ups. I tried to do System Restore, but all my restore points were gone! I couldn't even switch months! Also, Automatic Updates was telling me that it was off, but when I checked my settings were the same when I first set them.
Ive been having troubles with my comp Programs are opening up slowly and generaly most thing are slow. The main thing that i notice is when trying to attached a item to a emil in outlook i will click insert/file/cdrive/this file/ that file, it takes somewhere between 1-2 min to open cdrive and each click.
Another thing that i noticed was that when i remove the usb keyboard and mouse 1-2 min later i will get the soud of being removed.I get alot of programs not responding but after a while they do, eg when shutting down a associated program with the printer almost allways pops up not resonding but does after a while.
Both of my teens have Windows XP and both computers are running extremely slow after virus/spyware removal. One gets a debugging pop up everytime you try to do anything. I've tried to run skndsk but can only run it in a read only mode. Can anyone advised what to do without having to run fdisk and reformat the hard drive?
I had this Trojan vundo virus about a month ago and you helped me remove it. My computer was running fine until all of the same things started happening again. Im pretty sure i still have the virus b/c my computer is running very slow and just plain bad. I ran VundoFix.exe (it found like 10 things), clicked remove vundo, and rebooted. I ran HijackThis and here is this log file.what i need to delete? ....
Hey guys, I don't have the computer in front of me, but my mom's computer is working really slowly, and it's had the defragger ran on it, and according to Ad-Aware and AVG it's clean, so what could possibly be making it run so slowly? If you absolutely have no idea, I'll try to get a hijackthis log for it, but as I said, Ad-Aware and AVG didn't find anything wrong with it there, and I ran the defrag on it the other day and it didn't help at all. Plenty of space left on the HD, so I have no idea what is going on....except that maybe the computer is a lemon. They've had problems with it since pretty soon after they bought it, but it's just progressively gotten worse.
I have run my adaware, spybot, and virus scan....nothing comes up...but my computer is running very slow....I need to know why pages aren't loading as fast as they were.
