I havent put anything on the disk yet.Then, i realise i want some of the stuff (new emails i just received using mozilla) that is on my new disk, prior to me changing the partitions.Is there any way of checking what is on the new disk? I just put a new hard drive in and put the operating system on with the recovery cds. everything works great except for one problem. now 2 or 3 or 4 times a day when you use the computer, and no matter what you leave on when you walk away, like word or a site on the internet whatevert it may be and when you come back the screen is black and the error box that says no signal is on the screen. I made sure the graphics card has the newest driver, and the monitor is pretty new flat screen and always work well. I changed the monitor cable since it was saying no signal I figured it really had to be one of two things, either the monitor cable or the graphics card. My question is do you agree and will a graphics card do that when it is going out? will it work ok when you start the computer and then after awhile get no signal?

I have started to experience problems this started out being aload whinning noise that i have determined is either the hardrive or the a fan on the graphics card. I am worried that the harddrive is shot. The computer has started to tell me that there is a error speciffically "attribute seek error changes 100 to 200" so something is going on with the harddrive. I moved a couple of months back and am worried that the hardrive did not travel well. Also I have put in a new graphics card and wonder is it is producing much more heat. My sytem seems to be more and more unstable. I downloaded a trail versionof system mechanic and have used that to try and help but with little success. Every so often the computer would upon starting say that it had to check the Harddrive for systems intergity.

I wanted to set up WinXP so that when I install programs they are saved to C: leaveing drive D: for only system files. The problem I am having is that when i install new programs they dont want to be installed to drive C. Instead programs want to be installed to the system drive D. I would just tell programs to install on drive C but some of them will only give me the choice to install to D. How do I set up the partition so that programs will install to drive C?

This HDD had XP on a 50GB Partition, and Linux on a 30GB Partition, installed so I can choose between either operating system with Grub when I boot up. Well, I didn't want Linux anymore, so I used Norton Partition Magic to delete the Linux partition. Now, when I boot, GRUB loads and it just says 'unknown filesystem' and then 'GRUB rescue'.Obviously I didn't realize the GRUB started with Linux first, so now I'm screwed and can't boot.

I managed to get rid of it by system restore.A few days later I noticed I only had 127 GB of my 300GB harddrive showing.I did manage to find the missing space though Disk Management. It was showing 170GB as unallocated space. I named it E: and formatted it.It now shows in My Computer as New Volume E: When I open E:I get 2 folders, Recycler and System volume Information. SVI will not open. For an old machine it really hums now. Three minor problems are bugging me though. 1. I lost the sounds from my modem. The modem works fine except for no sound. I assume that the sound is from the unimodem half-duplex audio device that is located on the Lucent winmodem. I have checked everything. The system says that it is working correctly. I cannot even find the driver for this on microsoft . I thought if I could load a new driver it might work. No such thing. 2. System restore didn't work until I erased all the memory points and reloaded the program. Now if I open siystem restore and click on "settings" or "help" System restore shuts down. I assume it is corrupted and would like to reload it.

After starting my pc i noticed what 99% of data in my hard disk has vanished. it used to be only a 1GB free space there and now it shows 38,8 out of 39 GB. I tried system restore in normal and safe mode. .Thorough description of situation:
PC runs on Windows Xp SP2. It has 2 hard drives where the biggest one is paritioned into three drives: one for Windows installation, second was used for installation files of other programs (I kept Program Files folder there) and the alst one was dedicated for data storage. So the problem occured with the second drive. and as a result i do not have most of my programs running.
XP Pro SP2, all latest updates. When I reboot, I can correctly sync to a time server, but after an unknown amount of time it goes back to saying "The RPC server is unavailable" instantly after clicking Update Now, regardless of what server I tell it to sync to. I also noticed that if I view my nForce Networking Controller status, then click Properties and go to the Authentication tab, everything is greyed out. If I hit OK without changing anything (I can't change it even if I wanted to), a message pops up saying "An unexpected condition occured. Not all of your requested changes in settings could be made" and just goes back to that window. I have to hit cancel to close it

If I do a Start, Run, \computer it says "The network path was not found."There is no server on this particaular network it's all peer-to-peer, and I've enabled NetBIOS for good luck. Nothing. I cannot ping the other machines by name, either. All other machines in the network run fine.I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling components of Network Connections, and TCP/IP is the only protocol installed. I have confirmed that all of the computers are in the same subnet and same work group.There is no firewall software installed on the machine, apart from XP SP2, and I've disabled that.

View 5 Replies View RelatedNormally it connects to Orange BroadBand (ex Wanadoo, ex Freeserve) using its ADSL Speedtouch modem but while it's on my network I'm wanting it to use my network connection.However I try,any attempt to browse the iNet is met with it trying to connect via its dialup ADSL connection I've got connection settings to say don't bother).ipconfig /all reveals exactly what I'd expect for the LAN connection, DNS server is fine, etc. and I can ping an IP address but when I try to ping a hostname it says it doesn't know anything about that name, i.e. it's not managing to get the IP address from the DNS servers (I've also tried specifying other servers).
