I'm currently running Vista on a raid 0 array, and want to dual with XP. I have two partitions, one with vista and the other that I tried installing XP on. After it finishes the initial installation and restarts it says to press any key to boot from the CD. I wait without pressing anything and than it says that there was an error reading the disk. If I remember correctly, after it restarts it goes strait into windows setup. This happens every time I try restarting, but I can get back into vista by putting the hard drive to boot first. In vista I can see the other partition where XP was installed, and inside is just a folder titled WINDOWS and it seems like all the windows files are in there

In 2005, I bought a desktop PC, which included an installation CD for Windows XP. That computer broke down a few months ago, so I bought a laptop with Vista pre-installed. I have grown really tired of Vista and I would like to use XP for my laptop. So I used my old XP installation CD, but after I clicked "Install", a message appeared. It told me that the installation could not be done because the Windows system on the laptop (Vista) was newer than the XP on the CD. Can this be fixed in any way?

I recently installed XP on my HP laptop that came with Vista. On Vista my computer fan rarely gets loud and/or heats up (only when I'm performing several tasks). However, when XP just begins to boot--and I don't even do anything, the fan begins to spin really loudly and my laptop heats up and eventually shuts down due to overheating.I haven't updated any drivers yet for XP since I'm not too sure where I can find them or if they would do anything to solve this issue.

I am running the public beta 2 of Windows Vista x86 (32-bit version) on my PC--dual-booting with Windows XP SP2-- and I can't get my blasted Internet to work with it. Unfortunately, I haven't any way of running ethernet cable from my PC to the router--and so I need my wireless to work. The adapter is USB--a D-Link DWL-G120 wuireless card. It works fine as I'm using it now in XP SP2. My PC specs are listed in my sig.Anyone know of a driver that will work or any way to make this thing work with the Vista Beta 2 x86 build (public release)? I don't care if it only lets me use 802.11b--I just want a frikin driver that will allow me to test Vista's IE7 and such.

I bought a faulty laptop off my friend assuming that it just needed a fresh install off Vista, I installed Vista and now on bootup i get the error saying a file is missing, the file is usually "winload.exe" but can sometimes be other files which I cant remember the name of. Some times Vitsa will load up fine and the laptop would be perfect, but 90% percent of the time i got this error, whichis really boggling me.
I then tried to do a fresh install of XP, during the install I get a blue error screen, saying there is something wrong with my hardware and to run fdisk on my hard drive. I couldnt do this due to not being able to boot up so I bought a fresh new hard drive trying to fix the problem. I installed this HD and started the XP installation again, I am still getting the error message and I am stumped on what to try next.

I have 5 year old Inspiron 1100 that I recently opened up to clean the cooling fan/heat sink. This was the first time I ever opened this laptop and was careful about doing it. When I reassembled/closed up, the laptop would not boot up. The power light is on, the fan is running, but no HD activity, no display and no lights (number lock, scroll etc). I removed the battery and tried it with same results. I even removed the ram modules and tried to boot with same results.

Recently my laptop has been running very slowly and I've noticed that the cpu usage is usually at 100%, even when most of the more memory intensive programs such as firefox and azureus are closed. Is this a problem with most lenovo laptops? I have a thinkpad T43p.

We have two laptops and one wireless (HP Photosmart C7280) printer. Our laptops both connect to the internet wirelessly through a router. I was able to install and can print wirelessly from my laptop (a Mac) with no problems. However, we cannot figure out how to print wirelessly from my boyfriend's laptop (a Dell). We have installed the printer software and the printer itself on his laptop, and the laptop is able to identify the wireless printer over the network. We made sure that the printer is set to "online" and that file/printer sharing is turned on. But, whenever we go to print any kind of a file, we get an error message simply stating that the printer was unable to print and that we should run the troubleshooter. So, we run the troubleshooter, and we get this message:"The troubleshooter was not able to ping (detect a connection with) your print server. This might be the cause of the problem. Verify that your network is configured correctly and that you are connected to the network."
I am more used to working with Macs and my boyfriend is computer illiterate, so we're a bit lost as to what this means. I was able to set up a wireless network connection on his laptop, but beyond that I'm not sure what else to do. Most of the other advice I've seen online involves a wireless printer that is wired to one computer, and another laptop trying to wirelessly access that printer through the connected computer...if that makes any sense. Our printer isn't wired to anything, and we just can't figure out why it'll print wirelessly on the Mac but not on the Dell laptop. Any ideas?

I'm trying to fix my friend's computer. He has an acer laptop running windows xp professional. He said he got a virus and it shut down. When he started it back up it got as far as the windows xp loading screen. This is where it is stuck. It just keeps loading and keeps loading. He left it on for a few hours and it did nothing. We have restarted it like 20 times and still nothing. It won't let me boot to the virus cd i have (malewarebytes virus cd). I changed the boot order and still nothing. I have also tried all the options (None of these options worked eirther) ...
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (Your most Recent Settings That worked)
Start Windows Normally
At the top of the screen it says "We Apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Know Good Configuration to revert to the most recent setting that worked.
If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally."
I also tried all the advanced boot options and nothing worked. It doesn't even give me the option to boot to the cd. It's not showning up that there is a cd.
How can i solve this?

here's what's up - after about 10 minutes of being on the computer it slows down significantly, particularly web browsing. i usually notice the problem when using firefox 2.0 to check out videos on Internet. after watching 2 or so videos, the videos become very choppy and the system starts coming to a halt. checking out the task manager - i find that the cpu hits 100% during these episodes and per the processes the cpu is being gobbled up by firefox. a similar thing happens when i run itunes.
i installed a browser to monitor cpu speed/temp etc. i found that i have tons of ram available (at least 600 mb) even during the slow periods. i also found that the cpu temp is pretty reasonable (53 c) but then i found that my cpu is running at 600 mhz (most of the time, irregardless if plugged in or not). i can't seem to make my system run at full cpu capacity and am not sure why or if this has anything to do with my problem.

Computer boots to blue screen after showing Windows splash screen and then immediately restarts. Windows Stop code 0X0000007E (0X80000003, 0X805C370C, 0XBACCB2B4, 0XBACCAFB0). Computer will not boot in safe mode or last known good configuration. I have decided that I will need to reload windows but have several very important files on hard drive that I need to get off first. As it stands, I have 2.5" drive loaded into external hard drive enclosure. Only problem is that 2.5" drive has drive letter of C: like every other computer I have in my house. Is there anyway to change this letter to view files via usb enclosure? Any way to change drive path of C: volume on any other computer?

While running about a week ago, the monitor simply quit displaying anything. Now, when I boot up the laptop, it shows the BOIS icons and the Windows XP splash screen, but when it should show the logon screen (I have two user accounts on the box) the monitor goes blank. I know the laptop is still running because after a couple of minutes the screen saver music starts to play, so it must be a monitor-specific issue.I've gone into setup and reset the boot sequence to no effect, took out the battery and rebooted to no effect and now am at the end of my limited hardware diagnostic abilities.

So, a friend is looking to get a new laptop with a 17" display. I found this Toshiba Satellite model at BestBuy for $699: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1212192350169It comes with Windows Vista pre-installed. I went to the Toshiba support page for the laptop and found only ONE Windows XP driver and that's for the built-in modem. The bulk of the drivers are for Vista. What would the chances of actually getting Windows XP to fully function on this laptop? Where would I go for XP drivers for things like the ATI video adapter, the network adapters (Wi-Fi and Ethernet), and so on?

I have an advent 8315 laptop and running vista. When I turn it on the fan kicks in and just keeps continuously running but I don't get anything on the screen. I do get a blue power 'on light' but there's no blue light indicating the hard drive is at work (altho I have put the hard drive in a caddy and can read it fine). I have tried fn+F3 to see if I can get an image on an external screen but with no joy. As the laptop didnt come with a recovery disc, and I didnt make a recovery disc, can anyone advise as to how I can get it back up and running again please?

I'm trying to make a dual boot system Vista/XP with my HP Media Center purchased in 2007 with Vista pre-installed. Inside Vista I created the partition for XP (disk D and rebooted with the 'XP Pro SP2' inside. After selecting its correct partition for installing it copies all files on hard disk and it reboots in order to start its installation, upon rebooting and starting first time from hard disk, it says that there is an error in the system and stops. If I install only XP on the system it works correctly even though some newest hardware is not recognized. I had already made a dual boot two years ago with a 2007 XP Student Edition and it smoothly. If it is due to the XP version being too old that maybe cannot deal with the boot record created by Vista
Or perhaps such an old XP cannot recognize a boot hard disk that is not C:?
Is there a way to bypass this point (perhaps fixing the boot record) in order to continue correctly the installation?
Thank you,
Al
