How can I determine what startups apps and services should be checked in msconfig? I find some old posts regarding this topic on the forum, but the info seems outdated and the links provided are no longer valid. My PC starts very slowly and seems bogged down.
View 3 RepliesWithout using a third party program, does the XP system itself offer a quick way to see where my start up originate from, since msconfig startups only gives most of the line but not all, plus I cannot manually copy those lines to the run box to see where they go. Not having as in my case and AV, if I disable all the startups, reboot and the some startups are still there, can I interpreted those startups as malware then?

When I type MSCONFIG in Run I get a message saying"cannot find the file (or one of its components)". I did login as administrator, by the way. I don't have the discs for these machines. They were donated by the County for our use.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set up a new user account on my PC (XP SP2) that only has one user right now, "Default", that is an Admin and only I use. What I want to do is set up a new User profile called "Games" or something that I will only load when I want to play a PC game. Now I want this Games profile to be completely bare bones so as much of the computer's power is available for gaming performance as possible. My question is, if I create this new profile and use MSConfig and Services.msc to tweak what starts up, will that only affect the Games profile? Basically, can I safely disable almost everything on that profile without any adverse effects on my other profile and the functionality of my other programs?

View 3 Replies View Relatedwhen I reboot its extremely slow. Control Alt Delete shows 99% cpu use under processes. Not sure whats going on but been running find for a month at least haven't installed anything odd lately. Have a virus scanner and ad-ware installed.
edit * safe mode it loads fine no slow down.
edit 2 - If I set windows to not load system services in msconfig it fixes the problem. What options does that load?
Can anyone tell me what things I absolutely have to leave checked on the MSCONFIG screen? I want to turn off everything that doesn't need to be on but I don't know which ones have to be left on. Also is it safe to uncheck anything in the Services section? There are a lot of things running, can any of that stuff be turned off without hurting anything? There are a lot of AOL things that run all the time, what about those? Does turning any of those off help the computer run better at all

View 14 Replies View RelatedAfter installing Windows XP and all service packs and applications I am likely to use on it, I find it useful to disable services I am not likely to use on it to a bare minimum using MSCONFIG to stop additional CPU/MEM usage going on in the background. Here is a list of those services that I use, based on the fact that I have a cable broadband connection that is always on, and a Soundblaster Live Value Soundcard Go into Start Menu, Open RUN command, type MSCONFIG Goto SERVICES tab, select DISABLE ALL, APPLY, and check the following services to start with Windows and hit APPLY afterwards DHCP Client - AUTOMATIC Plug and Play - AUTOMATIC Remote Procedure Call (RPC) - AUTOMATIC Windows Audio - AUTOMATIC
There are also a few other services I use but not all the time, these are listed below and I would either put them on MANUAL if I use them sometimes or DISABLE them completely if I didn't use them at all Goto START MENU, PROGRAMS, ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, SERVICES, and modify the following by right clicking...
Spybot showed me a list of startup items which are listed under the key "System.ini". Values include crypt32chain, wlballoon and SensLogn.
What are these?
Also, there is a blank startup entry in the list. Should I just leave it there or remove it?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP Homedition. I have two drives inside, the regular C: drive and I have a Slave drive F: with all my photos and music and documents. The problem I'm having is that everytime I restart or reboot my system it say it needs to check F: drive for consistency. It haven't been doing that until now. Then once it goes through that the system comes up. I try to click on an icon like my internet or registry program, nothing comes up, its like a read only file or something. Its not executing the program. THEN all of a sudden I get a blue screen. It says this::"Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacture for driver updates. try changing video adapters. "Check with your hardware vendor for aany BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use SAFE mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advance SStartup options, and then select Safe Mode."
View 1 Replies View RelatedA while back I ditched my DSL in favor of a cable modem. I bought a new Linksys wireless gateway to go with the cable modem and since then my laptop (Compaq Presario 2570US, Win XP Pro) has a long delay right after booting into Windows where the computer just seems to freeze up. The mouse will move and you can highlight/click on icons but nothing will open or happen for about one minute until the wireless connection icon appears and picks up the network.
I thought maybe I had something in my startup profile that was causing the delay - I still haven't figured out the delay but I do have two startup items that I'm questioning... one is "carpserv.exe" which I believe accompanies the Conexant modem in the laptop. The other item is "kmw run.exe" - any idea what this is and if i can delete it safely? There are also a couple of 'blank lines' in the Startup tab (within msconfig) that have no title or command listed, only the registry location.
Could anyone explain to me the difference between doing an error check at boot up and doing a scannow check.
Is there an easy way to reset all of the services under services.msc back to their default settings?

What I have tried ...ran antivirus , ran spywarecleaner, defrag, ran memtest,adjusted to failsafe defaults in bios , flashed the bios, tried diff combinations of slots for memory, upgrade driver , upgraded via 4-1 drivers
A couple days ago figured it must be power supply (brand new one too) so I started unplugging devices ..second cd rom and fan pulled and everything has been running great since.Question before I drop $60 on power supply what should I look for , where is a good supplier and most important do you think this will solve the problem.
I am in the process of shoping around for additional RAM for my Dell 4600 Desktop. I have all the system stats I think I need to make sure everything matches, but I am not sure about latency, or timing. I have used the wizards on memory suplier homepages to determine what I need. Most answers come up with similar results, but modules vary in timing. Some are 2-3-3-6, 2-3-2-5 and others 3-6-6-8. Should all my modules be matching, and how can I find out what my present ones are. Is there an analysis tool I can run?

Her CPU is a P4 2.66 GHz; with 1.25GB PC2700 RAM; 80G HDD (using 25%); The only hard ware installed is a printer, high speed modem, and ipod. I updated the drivers for those, and still no help. I also went through add/remove programs and got rid of those that she will never use, I did not remove any system critical programs, I'm an advanced user so I know what not to delete. I also went into the system tools and stopped some services for running auto on system boot. Like her Ipod, I set to manual, Printer (not spoolsvc) I set to manual, etc. I also ran a defrag on the HDD. Still, not much difference.

As sold it came with 256MB RAM, but I had it upgraded to 512MB at the time of purchase.I have recently upgraded it to 1GB RAM, replacing all the existing RAM with 2 x Kingtson 512MB chips. At the same time I changed the SP pagefile setting from 'custom' to 'system managed', and when rebooted the system created a larger page file.Sadly I have seen little if any improvement in boot or loading speed, nor does there seem to have been any reduction in the amount of disk paging which seems to go on in the background while the screen hangs. How can I determine the best settings for the pagefile please? I've read the MS knowledge base etc, but I'm really no clearer as to what to do - and a query to MS "support" merely pointed me back to the knowledge base.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a user who is accumulating files in his %temp% directory at an average rate of 3 per minute, and they don't clean up on their own, so he ends up with hundreds of built up files daily.Their names all start with "ver" then have numbers and letters, like "ver7b905", the only part that is consistent is the first three letters. Is there a troubleshooting method I can use to determine what is creating these files, or a master list somewhere to look it up like we can with file extensions? The system is XP Pro SP2.

After clicking "Express" or "Custom" from within the Windows Update home page, it seems to take 10-15 minutes for the site to finally tell me what updates are needed.
How do you determine what the items are that are listed in the Sys Config Utility (msconfig.exe), startup tab? My system has a few listed that only have a registry entry listed in the Location column--the other two columns are blank. I'd like to know what they are.
View 10 Replies View Relatedwhen i run chdisk for errors in win 2000 by right clicking the hard drive icon and then clicking properties of c: harddrive, then tools tab, then click the check now button, and in the check disk options ticking "automatically fix file system errors" and clicking ok I get this message "The disk check could not be performed because exclusive access to the drive could not be obtained. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer."If i chose yes to that above it performs the diskcheck at reboot and when windows loads i go back to the checkdisk and i get the same problem again.

I had windows vista ultimate x64 installed but I didn't like it so I decided to buy windows xp MCE 2005 and here is my problem I'm trying to do the install but it continues to give me the BSOD. Even after I read a thread about the same issue, I couldnt get pass the BSOD and the topic was locked so here I am.
My raid is set to auto detect but I dont have a raid setup since I'm allowing xp to do this for me. I did have one setup for vista but I deleted it thinking I needed to start fresh for xp am i right? I boot from CD and tried to hit F6 but nothing happens. I let it go and continue with the loading. Here's where I'm at now. Windows Setup Setup could not determine the type of one or more mass storage devices isntalled in your system, or you have chosen to manually specify an adapter. Currently , setup will load support for the following mass storage devices.....
