Way To Determine What Program Created Temp Files
Apr 6, 2006
I have a user who is accumulating files in his %temp% directory at an average rate of 3 per minute, and they don't clean up on their own, so he ends up with hundreds of built up files daily.Their names all start with "ver" then have numbers and letters, like "ver7b905", the only part that is consistent is the first three letters. Is there a troubleshooting method I can use to determine what is creating these files, or a master list somewhere to look it up like we can with file extensions? The system is XP Pro SP2.

most of my files have lost their icon and when i open them they pop this error windows saying"Windows cannot open this file: To open this file, windows needs to know what program created it. Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer."it seems to be a problem with the extensions of applications

Have Windows XP Home Ed (Serv Pack 2)
Have a number of "Temp" directories on the C root directory (Directory names such as: "Adobe Acrobat.temp" - "Console.temp" - "Display.temp" - "DLA Writing.temp" - "McAfee.temp" - "Intel chipset.temp").
Near as I can tell these directories were created when I installed these programs, but not completely sure.
I have learned the hard way that, "Not all temp directories can or should be deleted."

Recently re-installed WXP after Computer Crash.
Copied "My Documents" folder from thumb drive to the computer
.
Noticed several folders in "My Documents" were missing so thought I didn't back up to the thumb drive often enough so figured they were lost in the crash.
Wasl looking for a file and was unsure in which folder it might be located so did a "search" and found it in "My Documents". Went back to the "My Documents" folder and it wasn't there so did another search. This is what I discovered:
I went into Windows Explorer and found "My Documents"
I went into "My Computer" and then the "C" drive and found Documents and Settings, Gary, My Documents in the tree

I installed UNIX Services for Windows. Then I installed a UNIX application. Then I wanted to remove both.
I tried to removed the application but some of the files would not let me delete them.I then uninstalled UNIX Services for Windows which worked fine but left behind it's folder 'C:SFU' because a few application folders are there and are write protected.I installed them under UNIX Services for Windows and now I can't delete them.Any back doors or UTILS to get rid of them? I tried KILLBOX but it could not do it.

I just moved in to my buddy from work, and decided to put a pass on my PC, since a lot of people go thru the house on weekends. I set up an account, gave it admin privileges, but when setup asked: "would you like to give that account access to files?" (or some similar question) I selected NO. When account loaded I couldn't get access to any of my files! The problem now is that I can't delete that new account, because it's the only account! I tried setting up another one with administrator privileges, but it doesn't ask that question anymore (would you like to give that account access to files?), so I can't get access? Do you know a solution, or a step towards getting access to files back?

Saw this asked earlier, but apparently unresolved, so I'll ask it again.Dell laptop, Win XP Home, 1.7 GHz CPU,384MB RAM.Running slowly, clogged with junk-ware.Used F.A.S.T. wizard to create a backup on an external drive.Reformatted Hard Disk and re-loaded WINXP Home from the Dell installation CD.Reloaded driver disk, too.FAST will not recognize the data files created previously: says the directory contains no data.Files are there;I transferred them to C: and tried FAST again, with same result.

I recently used system restore in WinXP and now in all of my program directories there are additional folders named Data with a folders name resources in those. In the resources folder are the exe files for the programs and all shortcuts I have for those programs point to these exe files. So when I use one of those shortcuts two instances of the program opens and slows my computer down.

My browser files have are very confusing. My C:Documents and SettingsUSERNAMELocal Settings Temp has some junk, but some of it is active system files- which shouldn't be there. One folder in ''Temp'' is called ''Cookies''. Another folder in ''Temp'' is called ''History'' and contains ''History.IE5''. also ''temporary internet files''.There is also a ''History'' folder one level up (where it should be) that has no''History.ie5''. There is also a ''Cookies'' folder two levels up (where it should be). It seems to be an exact duplicate of the one in the ''Temp'' folder, I deleted all the other files in ''Cookies'', but they reappeared later. If I try to delete(in safe mode) everything in the Temp folder, I discover that they reappear after restart. how can i get rid of files from temp folder.and also how can i restore History folder which has no historyIE6 sub folder.same with temporary internet folder.

Windows XP SP2 temp files I would just like to know if I can safely delete ALL the temp files in this folder, if for no other reason than to free up some space, or maybe speed up things a little bit. A simple search under Windows Explorer(*.tmp )has some files show up as Windows emp, some as Windowssystem32, and some as Program Files PC MightyMax, but all of these are listed as tmp in the TYPE heading of Windows Explorer. In addition, I've never used the Hijack This program before but I will now to submit what I guess is a snapshot of my system...?? Perhaps someone could suggest adjustments, if any, as my system does run slow on many occasions. My specs are as follows: Windows XP SP2 Home Edition, IE6, McAfee Internet Security Suite 2005, 2.4ghz processor, 256MB RAM, 40GB hard drive (NTFS file system).

For some reason I am now accumulating temp files in my Windows emp directory at a rate of 2 EVERY 2 minutes. They are 0kb in size and consist of nothing if I open them in notepad. They are named along the lines of A401 or B01 and I don't know where they're coming from. I see no unknown processes in taskmanager and I have virus checked and adaware&spybot checked my system to no avail. I left my PC (which is standalone and not connected to the Internet) running overnight, doing nothing, and there were over a 1000 temp files the next day.

I regularely use CCleaner to quickly remove junk from my computer. It empties the "Temporary Internet Files" folder and many temporary files but it does not empty the "Temp" folder in Windows XP (C:Documents and Settings(Account Name)Local SettingsTemp) or the "My Temp Files" folder within the "Temp" folder. I've noticed that videos I've watched online get stored in this folder as well as folders full of virus signatures downloaded before doing free online virus scans. Consequently this folder can quickly eat up valuable space on my laptops little hard drive.

I was there today and her pc is soooooo slow! She knows nothing about pc's besides email and IM.First thing I was going to do was to delete all her temp files. Went to start, clicked on run, typed in %temp% and up came 2,049 temp files! Well, duh no wonder it's slow. I was explaining to her what 'temp files' are. But she doesn't even you the internet. The first page of her temp file was as follows:DF1CF4and when I tried to delete them it said : cannot delete ~~ DF1CF4: It is being used by another person or program. As I scrolled through the next few pages they seemed to be all alike, maybe a variance of the last two numbers.

I've noticed that when deleting TIF's via Tools-Internet Options-Delete Files, that it takes far longer with my XP installation than with my old ME install. I see that the space allowed by default is 1192 MB. Is this the optimum size or should that be smaller to avoid accumulating so many files? I really don't recall what the setting was in ME days, but 400 MB seems to stick in my head.
