Using MSConfig And Services.msc Affects A Profile?
Jul 27, 2005
I'm trying to set up a new user account on my PC (XP SP2) that only has one user right now, "Default", that is an Admin and only I use. What I want to do is set up a new User profile called "Games" or something that I will only load when I want to play a PC game. Now I want this Games profile to be completely bare bones so as much of the computer's power is available for gaming performance as possible. My question is, if I create this new profile and use MSConfig and Services.msc to tweak what starts up, will that only affect the Games profile? Basically, can I safely disable almost everything on that profile without any adverse effects on my other profile and the functionality of my other programs?

Dell XPS T450, 576 MBWindows XP Pro OSI'm trying to make some startup changes using msconfig.exe and services.msc from the run command line. Despite running under an administrator login, I get a message to the effect that I don't have administrator privileges to run these commands.

when I reboot its extremely slow. Control Alt Delete shows 99% cpu use under processes. Not sure whats going on but been running find for a month at least haven't installed anything odd lately. Have a virus scanner and ad-ware installed.
edit * safe mode it loads fine no slow down.
edit 2 - If I set windows to not load system services in msconfig it fixes the problem. What options does that load?

How can I determine what startups apps and services should be checked in msconfig? I find some old posts regarding this topic on the forum, but the info seems outdated and the links provided are no longer valid. My PC starts very slowly and seems bogged down.

Can anyone tell me what things I absolutely have to leave checked on the MSCONFIG screen? I want to turn off everything that doesn't need to be on but I don't know which ones have to be left on. Also is it safe to uncheck anything in the Services section? There are a lot of things running, can any of that stuff be turned off without hurting anything? There are a lot of AOL things that run all the time, what about those? Does turning any of those off help the computer run better at all

At my job we have about 500 networked users on WinXP 32 bit. Each user has an individual log in - there are no roaming profiles. We're in the process of creating a new image andI'm having a disagreement with a new tech here. He says we should get rid of the Default User Profile and only use the All Users Profile. Every time I've created an image I've set up the image the way I want and then copied that over to the default profile - so that when new users log in - they see exactly what i've set up in terms of the standard desktop shortcuts we use. This new tech thinks the default user's profile redundant and not really needed. I'm having a hard time finding information the default users profile and if it's needed or not.

I have a corrupt user profile. A program would not work (Avery DesignPro 3.5) and their support told me to create a new user profile.I did, and the program works under the new profile. The problem is that nothing that I use all the time is under the new profile. How can I uncorrupt my regular user profile, or do I need to switch back and forth when I want to use that program?

I had a user account, However, for some reason, I have done something wrong and reboot the machine, that user account had gone, only Administrator is left. Then I created an account with the same name: John Smith. I noted under the Documents and Settings, there are 2 John Smith, they are: 1)John Smith and 2)John Smith.JS I think the first one is the original one because the date modified was a couple of months ago. The second one is the one that I just created. Can I recover my original one ?

I have been battling with my computer and not sure what to do anymore. I am having intermittent problems where my computer will go into standby mode while I am working. I have been losing work, of course, and feeling fusterated. I have run every anti-virus and anti-spy program and I believe my computer is free of those sorts of things. but you can never be too sure. However, I continue to have problems and get an error from windows regarding my monitor drivers for the NVIDA software. I tried to ninstall, and then install new drivers and that was a big mess. So I tore them out, and now just let XP figure out which drivers to use. However, I continue to get the NVIDA error from the OS when I start up. I am not sure, though, that this is the root. I don't want to reinstall for fear of getting locked out of the profile again.
I start up, and when its feeling like it-- about every other time. it lets me into my profile. I will think that its going to be a good day, but then my machine is moving as fast as a snail I do the HJT log and find this particular line that improves performance once I delete it. The problem is, however, it always comes back after a few restarts. I don't know how to make it completely away, and I am not really sure of what it is too that is, if that is what is causing my random shut downs..... I looked up these and it seems like a normal system process when something else has caused a glitch is that correct?

This computer boots up to a user profile (Welcome) selection log-in screen. Unfortunately, it does not matter which profile is selected because as soon as the profile logs into the users desktop screen (if flashes on the screen for less than a split second) the OS (XP HOME) immediately logs off the profile and returns the computer to the profile log in (Welcome) screen. The computer does NOT re-boot, it only cycles back to the user selection (Welcome) log-in screen. I have also attempted to boot the computer in safe mode and access the Administrator account. The results are the same. Also, I also tried the "Last known good configuration" in safe mode

I wonder if someone can help me with this issue. I am using an HP laptop that operates Windows XP. The problem is that when I log into the system, it shows a message that indicates a corrupted registry files in the user profile, then windows logs into another created user profile as the following: username.computer's name, rather than having the user name only. I still can view my folders and My Documents, but I cannot access my previous user profile. The starting page that Windows loads when I log in is that same page that was when I first purchased the laptop. I also tried to change my password but this didn't work. The problem seems to be in the registry files. Can anyone lead me to the solution?

In Documents and Settings I have five profiles: Administrator, All Users WINDOWS, Joe Webber, LocalService NT AUTHORITY and NetworkService NT AUTHORITY. I am the only user of my PC and I am not connected to the internet (I use the local library system), so I would like to put all the relevant material into one profile and delete the rest. Is this possible and if so which one should I choose to keep?

I'm trying to create mandatory profiles for all of the users, that will be logging onto the system. I'm using windows xp Professional, and keep on getting this error message when I set the users profile from a network location."Your roaming profile (read only) is not available. You are logged on with the locally stored profile. This may be caused by incorrect file system permissions or network problems. Contact your network administrator."When i set the profile up on a tempary account, i made sure that everyone has access to use it. But the profile only works from one account only.

I just booted up my HP NC6120 laptop (Win XP Pro, 512MB RAM, plent of free HDD space, etc.) to which I have administrator rights and went to log in with my normal username/password, but I get three error messages. The first one says something to the effect "cannot create temporary profile. may be caused by insufficient rights." I then have to click ok or it times out in 30 secs or something like that. After that window closes another opens saying something like "cannot load profile. logged on with default profile". Windows then appears to be loading, but I get a blank light blue screen with only a blank window w/ red error 'x' on it and nothing else. I click ok, it says it's logging me off. I am able to log into Safe Mode (typing from there now). Everything in my docments folders are still there, etc. So I created a new user account with admin rights, but get the same error messages when tring to log in normally (not via safe mode).

First, what's the difference between the following user profile folders?
user1
user1.MYDOMAIN
user1.MYMACHINE
The second one is a domain user. The third one is a local user. What's the first folder?
I have a user with this configuration. Until last week, his profile folder was "user1". All his desktop items and so on are in there. A few days ago he logged in like he usually does and was left with a new profile, "user1.MYDOMAIN".
So... what's "user1" and how would I log into it?
Thanks!

I got a classic pull-down menu and a decent wallpaper in my windows xp OS. I also got a account set up in my outlook express. All of sudden, when I logged in as usual (with my log-in name and password), I found that all the above configs have gone. Is it possible that someone using another log-in name can alter the user profile of someone else? If yes or no, then how and why?

I would like to change the name of my profile folder under the Docs/settings folder to match my laptop. The Desktop has the generic "owner" that shows
up after hard drive restoration with my restore disk. I should have created a new profile when I did this, but I forgot and reinstalled everything into the Owner folder.I realize that I cannot just rename the folder due to reg settings. How can I achieve this.

My problem started when I read an article on the web that Microsoft uses a "/prefetch:1" command to load Windows Media Player faster than normal. This is usually added to the shortcuts found on your taskbar and desktop. I thought this is a great idea. I should have this "/prefetch:1" command on all my important shortcuts.
I logged into my limited account and I tested it on the programs I used the most and in fact it worked wonderful, that is until I used it on a particular program called 2xExplorer. This program is like Windows Explorer on steroids. I've used this great program for a couple of years now and never had a problem. I added the "/prefetch:1" command to my 2xExplorer shortcut and when I launched the program it worked fine.

I'm having an issue with a new laptop. several programs or just parts of programs will run painfully slow or take several minutes to load or when they finally do load they freeze. System restore and help files suffers from the same problem along with msn messenger 8, ares, and the dictionary in microsoft works. those are all that i've noticed with the problem i'm sure there are others. i've used registry mechanic tried reinstalling msn and ares with no solutions. also this problem seems to be profile specific. i created another profile on this machine and the problems seemed to dissipear but i would perfer to keep this profile. when i'm trying to load these programs if i open task manager the cpu will usually be low as if i'm not loading anything. also there is somtimes about a minute or 2 or halfway into loading the program loading will apear under the apps twice. one as itself ares.exe or whatever the restore exe is, and one at explorer.exe. i dont believe explorer.exe is a virus it seems to b normal. i assume that the problem has to do with the cpu right now but i have no idea how i would fix that. other than those few programs everything else runs fine. i defreg regularly and so on. i run avg 7.1 windows xp home. its a 64 bit lap i think so i assume it would be a 64 bit edition HP Pavilion.

I don't know what is happening to my XP Pro computer but everytime I reboot the computer, it tells me that windows cannot find my desktop profile and it recreates a new one. This is obviously becoming very annoying and making it very hard to be productive as all my icons are gone etc. I have noticed that no actual programs or files are missing, it is just that all the profiles I set go away. I did a google search and found nothing.
