Renaming Profile Folder Name WinHome?
Aug 5, 2005
I would like to change the name of my profile folder under the Docs/settings folder to match my laptop. The Desktop has the generic "owner" that shows
up after hard drive restoration with my restore disk. I should have created a new profile when I did this, but I forgot and reinstalled everything into the Owner folder.I realize that I cannot just rename the folder due to reg settings. How can I achieve this.

I'm trying to change some settings and file names.Specifically,I would like to know if there is anyway at all I can change the Documents and Settings folder. Not the All Users one, but the folder with my friends' name on it. The system is telling me this folder cannot be changed, but sort of reinstalling XP, isn't there some "back door" method I can employ?

I would like to rename a Windows system folder, specifically: "C:Documents and SettingsDAVID..."As this information is visible when surfing the web. I have tried doing it the usual way and am presented with a dialogue box saying: "DAVID... is a system folder and is required for windows to run properly. It cannot be moved or renamed."

I am using Windows XP Home OS. I have formatted a CD-R disc using Direct CD format utility. When I try to create a new folder on this CD and rename it after the "new folder" appears, the system crashes and reboots itself. I have been able to do this without any problem before and this has suddenly just occurred. I can't be sure if this is the first time I have tried this since updating to SP2. Can this be a problem with Windows Explorer?

when I booted my XP Pro system, my user profile admin) was corrupt and all my user settings were lost. Then I found that my documents were gone too.The files do not appear anywhere on my hard drive. no docs & settings folder has them. btw, no viruses found on my pc.When I use a undelete file utility, I can see the files at cdocuments & settings/temp, but windows explorer does not see this folder. Nor does explorer see any *.doc, *.xls, *.jpg, or any other file that I had saved in "My Documents" The file resoration free ware that I downloaded (to usb drive) does recover some files that have not been written over. However, I have multi GB of data

I have a user's My Documents folder redirected to a share on our domain controller. The name of this user's My Documents folder is username's Documents. Whenever I try to change this to My Documents, it immediately reverts back to username's Documents. However, if I open a command window and say dir, I see My Documents which is what I would expect.

I have been updating my winamp thumbnail database with all the associated album art. Every so often, I run into a little problem. When I add a new image to a band's folder and rename the image "folder.jpg" I get an error message stating that I "cannot rename the file because there is already another with the same title" or something along those lines. This typically happens with albums I have previously added album art through with my "Zune" (mp3 player).

At my job we have about 500 networked users on WinXP 32 bit. Each user has an individual log in - there are no roaming profiles. We're in the process of creating a new image andI'm having a disagreement with a new tech here. He says we should get rid of the Default User Profile and only use the All Users Profile. Every time I've created an image I've set up the image the way I want and then copied that over to the default profile - so that when new users log in - they see exactly what i've set up in terms of the standard desktop shortcuts we use. This new tech thinks the default user's profile redundant and not really needed. I'm having a hard time finding information the default users profile and if it's needed or not.

I've got a hand-me-down laptop that I inherited from my dad (IBM Thinkpad 600X), which is running Windows XP Home Edition. I never cease to be amazed at what sort of weird configurations my dad managed to get in place, or how much time it takes to undo some of these configurations now that the laptop has been handed down.

With installation disk in CD drive, asks choose between
1. c:windows
2. f:winnt (which is CD drive)
for either, asked to "type the administrator password"
Not sure which I should have chosen, 1 or 2
For 1, hitting Enter does nothing
For 2, hitting Enter, get error message, "the password is not valid"
I have administrator rights; there is no password. When I had logon box, I left password blank and hit Enter to logon.

I have a corrupt user profile. A program would not work (Avery DesignPro 3.5) and their support told me to create a new user profile.I did, and the program works under the new profile. The problem is that nothing that I use all the time is under the new profile. How can I uncorrupt my regular user profile, or do I need to switch back and forth when I want to use that program?

I had a user account, However, for some reason, I have done something wrong and reboot the machine, that user account had gone, only Administrator is left. Then I created an account with the same name: John Smith. I noted under the Documents and Settings, there are 2 John Smith, they are: 1)John Smith and 2)John Smith.JS I think the first one is the original one because the date modified was a couple of months ago. The second one is the one that I just created. Can I recover my original one ?

i have a collection of pictures on my pc,tranferred on to hard drive from a digital camera.they cover sep-dec'06. i have put them all, individually, in a folder, having renamed them to a,b,c, --- etc,to get them to burn to cd-r in sequence. i use xp's 'burn to cd' facility.however, they still come out jumbled and not in sequence as desired. i believe there is a way of correctly renaming them for this purpose but i can not remember how. i seem to remember some article suggesting using 0000/0001/0002 numbering etc to achieve this.is this correct/ correct numbering sequence?

As the title states, whenever I right click on a file, beit on the desktop or in a folder somewhere, it can take anywhere between 10 and 20 seconds before I can click on "Delete" or "Rename". When I try clicking on one of the two, my CD drive (or hard drive?) starts spinning and it won't let me click on my desired action until it's up to its "cruising speed" in RPM.

I am having an issue on one PC when renaming image files (.bmp).For example I have 2 images square.bmp = image of a square circle.bmp = Image of a circle If I rename sqaure.bmp to squareTest.bmp and then rename circle.bmp to square.bmp. The thumbnail image that displays for circle.bmp will change to square. If I then change it back to circle.bmp the image will go back to be the correct circle.

I've set everything up on this account and don't fancyhaving to make a new one, I'd just like to know how to change the username properly.

I am building a new PC for my in-laws. However they are giving me their old PC, which I will be using to install Linux on and use as a learning tool for myself. The problem comes in that they would like to use their XP Home license on the new machine. The old machine is a Compaq, and Compaq only supplies rescue disks.not an actual XP disk.Is there anyway for me to get their legally owned copy of XP onto their new machine without them having a store bought XP Home disk? I do have access to a XP Home disk, is it possible to do the install with that, and just enter their Product Key, or will that be recognized as an incorrect Product Key?

I have been battling with my computer and not sure what to do anymore. I am having intermittent problems where my computer will go into standby mode while I am working. I have been losing work, of course, and feeling fusterated. I have run every anti-virus and anti-spy program and I believe my computer is free of those sorts of things. but you can never be too sure. However, I continue to have problems and get an error from windows regarding my monitor drivers for the NVIDA software. I tried to ninstall, and then install new drivers and that was a big mess. So I tore them out, and now just let XP figure out which drivers to use. However, I continue to get the NVIDA error from the OS when I start up. I am not sure, though, that this is the root. I don't want to reinstall for fear of getting locked out of the profile again.
I start up, and when its feeling like it-- about every other time. it lets me into my profile. I will think that its going to be a good day, but then my machine is moving as fast as a snail I do the HJT log and find this particular line that improves performance once I delete it. The problem is, however, it always comes back after a few restarts. I don't know how to make it completely away, and I am not really sure of what it is too that is, if that is what is causing my random shut downs..... I looked up these and it seems like a normal system process when something else has caused a glitch is that correct?

This computer boots up to a user profile (Welcome) selection log-in screen. Unfortunately, it does not matter which profile is selected because as soon as the profile logs into the users desktop screen (if flashes on the screen for less than a split second) the OS (XP HOME) immediately logs off the profile and returns the computer to the profile log in (Welcome) screen. The computer does NOT re-boot, it only cycles back to the user selection (Welcome) log-in screen. I have also attempted to boot the computer in safe mode and access the Administrator account. The results are the same. Also, I also tried the "Last known good configuration" in safe mode
