The root folders of my external drives and My Documents are showing Picture Tasks instead of the Common Files and Folders Tasks. They also show the watermark for images for the background image (when I have this feature on). How can I fix this? There is no Customize tab under Properties for these folders. The root folder for the system drive is fine. I have Windows XP Home SP2.
Tweak Description: Just like the title says this registry hack will add printers and folders, scheduled tasks, network connections, fonts, and administrative tools to my computer which makes it very easy to navigate through the system settings. Note: it is recommended to back up the registry before any registry hacks.
Why do my thumbnailed folders (with a folder.jpg inside of them) display random images that I never assigned to them? Is there are way to correct this behavior or is this just an XP glitch? Using Tweak UI I increased the amount of folders for XP to store in memory to 10,000 thinking that may solve the problem, but it hasn't. It's especially frustrating since I spent many hours organizing my Music folders so that they display the correct cover art.For example, why does my Radiohead folder, which should display an image of the band (which is in the Radiohead folder as "folder.jpg") assign an image of Cindy Lauper, which is in another folder?
I've been doing a lot of research and have yet find an answer anywhere on the web. What I want to do is add folders to my start panel where you would find My Music, My Pictures, My Documents, etc. Does anyone know how to do this?
XP Media Centre. When I click My Documents the folder list appears but will not open any when clicked. Also cannot open My Computer. Control Panel opens and list appears but cannot open some folders such as Add/Remove Programs. Also, I.E. will not start. However programs such as Word will start OK, and will open some files.
Does anyone know how I can change all the icons of windows!! Like search , run, folders, control panel, and control panel options??? I have some icons that I want windows to use!! How can I do that???
Windows Folder Options Contents..downloads all sorts of images from Internet. I have checked the box Disable Cached Thumbnails in Control Panel Folders Options but now how do you remove all the images?
HP notebook (4 yrs old), running XP. I do not have the recovery disc. I can not get into safe mode as it stops loading in the process of loading or checking drivers. I can get it to the XP splash screen but when it goes to the next screen which should be my log on screen, it is blank. Is there anyway to fix this and replace the file or do I trash it and get a new laptop.
I downloaded the new version of Internet Explorer (version 8) as this was an option when I signed onto the web this afternoon But after downloading this I had trouble getting onto the net. So I restarted the PC. But, it did not restart. Instead I get the following message on a plain black screen when I try to run my computer: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>system32hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file.
my laptop stopped working. After dwld some Excel service pack the pc refused to restart. The message is quite ominous: Stop error c0000218 and the hive affected is system root/system32/config/default It's impossible to recover the last working config or start in safe mode or do anything. It keeps looping back to the blue screen with the stop error. The pc does not recognize the hard drive, it does not have a recovery cd.
I have XP Home version and have had some unusual issue wth System Restore. When I bring up utilities for system restore, it shows drive I as the system drive instead of drive C.I can sort of understand why this might happen because I installed a new 200 gig drive 5 months ago and made my old C drive I. My system tells me that C is my boot drive and I am not having any real problems except with restore. Looks like something is wrong in restor's database.
When i'm on a web page and i click the "favourites" (yellow star button) in WinXP (on the toolbar above the web page) i see all my favourite websites, but the little yellow icon does not appear beside them, so i'm unsure whether they are direct links to the web pages or whether they are folders containing the links !! Oddly enough, when i plug in my USB HD, the little yellow folder icons re-appear What can i do to get the folders icons back (without having to keep my USB HD switched on) ?
upon my start up a Common folder which incldudes drivers pops up. This has recently started. I am not sure why but I am trying to stop this. Please help and let me know if i should be concerned. I have already checked under my startup tab but no common folder listed.
My brand new Dell computer has the wrong time in the system tray. I have checked to make sure that I am in the correct time zone, (pacific time), but it is two hours off. Can I fix this myself or do I have to call Dell?
I have got a 200 gig hard disk and when i go to properties it say its full i the piechart but when u go in to the hard Disk and select all folders it says theres only 40 gig been used . Has any1 got any sugestions on how to fix this prob i have tryed disk clean but it does not do any thing.
A few days ago I noticed that when I tried to play a video file that I downloaded with VLC, it actually opened another video file on that hard drive (500GB Seagate, partition G: used for video files) instead of the one I selected. It had played fine earlier, so something must have happened to cause the file system to point to the wrong file.
I didn't pay too much attention to it at first, but then this morning I noticed that this wasn't the only occurrence of this weird error. When I tried to play a podcast episode with iTunes which is located on another partition and another hard drive (320GB Seagate, partition H: used for music files) it *also* was pointing to another music file on that same hard drive. Because this struck me as very odd I tried opening other files on these partitions. Some opened the right file, some opened wrong ones. I've done a chkdsk on both partitions. On the H: partition it did fix some errors, but G: seemed to be fine. Nevertheless, the problem remained. I've tried to google for this problem, but I'm having trouble finding a good search term. I've never had a problem like this before, so I'm unfamiliar with the terminology that might be used to document this problem.
When I left-click on the system icon in the control panel of XP, nothing happens. If I right-click I get the choices of "open" or "create shortcut." Clicking "open" here does nothing. I assume that this means that the icon isn't pointing anywhere, but I can't figure out where to address that. No doubt this is a registry thing, but I don't wade into that quagmire alone.
Whenever I try and enter my control panel I get "windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. Then my system freezes and the only thing I can do is exit control panel through task manager to get back to desktop.I get the usual error reporting messages and one from Dr Watson whatever that is.
I seem to have a problem similar to at least one other person.Control Panel has disappeared and any attempt to change any settings results in an error messge directing me to the Sys Admin.
I went to install a program last night thati have recieved of a friend(well i thought we were) and now i have lost use of a lot of functions and keep getting security messages pop up on my screen.
I've been looking for a way to ensure that a specific task runs after my desktop resumes from hibernation. Initially, I'd hoped for something akin to the "Run at user logon" or "Run at startup" optionsavailable in the schedule tab of a scheduled task, but there is no setting for "Run at resume from standby/hibernation"
Restore a VPN connection after the computer's network capabilities are restored on resuming from hibernation. This is important because I have to occasionally wake thesystem from offsite using its Wake-On-LAN NIC. I've tried setting up a scheduled task to run at start-up and user logon which uses RASDIAL to dial the appropriate VPN connection, but this connection depends on the logged-in user's credentials, so it won't work at start-up. When set to have it run at user logon, it doesn't run when the computer comes out of hibernation.
Running a VB program from Sheduled Tasks, the VB program is supposed to bring up a form with information. The program works fine when started the "normal" way but when i start it from Sheduled Tasks it does start but it does not bring up the form. You can see the program running among the processes but thats all.
I'm trying to schedule AdAware to run weekly in the middle of the night. I've set up a scheduled task which does exactly what it is supposed to do--to a point. Adaware pops right up at the appointed time, but requires a "run scan" click from me to proceed any further. I've configured AdAware for automated scans and had hoped the scheduler, combined with this setting would kick off a truly automatic scan while I sleep soundly.
New to XP this week. When I first started I had something called file and folder tasks under My Computer. It still is under My Documents. I think I pushed the wrong button somewhere. How to put file and folder tasks back under My Computer?I was trying to copy data to a CD. In a section named:: To copy a file or folder" it tell you to go to My Computer.Under File and Folder Tasks you are to click on Copy this file or Copy this folder. When I still had File and Folder Tasks under My Computer it did not have anything about doing Copy. How do you add that to File and Folder Tasks if I get it back under My Computer.
I've tried in different accounts and even in the addmin account in safe mode and I always get the same error.I also get this error at home (this is my girlfriends computer) the error reads:New Task has been created, but may not run because the account info could not be sent. The specific is: 0x80041315 The task scheduler service is not running. What am I doing wrong? I've never had this problem before, is there some sort of option I need to select to get it to work?
Goto[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced]create a dword value named "TaskbarGroupSize"double click the new value and enter the number of open windows before XP groups them together.I prefer 2, but you can go higher.Log off and log back in. You should be good to go. Happy tweaking. (The latter was added after first submission)
