I'm trying to schedule AdAware to run weekly in the middle of the night. I've set up a scheduled task which does exactly what it is supposed to do--to a point. Adaware pops right up at the appointed time, but requires a "run scan" click from me to proceed any further. I've configured AdAware for automated scans and had hoped the scheduler, combined with this setting would kick off a truly automatic scan while I sleep soundly.
I have not posted into here in a while which is kind of promising. I suppose it means I am getting better with my computer skills, a fact for which I am compelled to thank many of the folks around here... Anyways...Today I have question regarding backing up data to an external hard drive. I am trying to schedule my data to back up nightly around 12:00 Am. I have so far tried using microsoft's backup utility, which even after scheduled does not run, and a program called sonic, backup my pc. I can get microsoft backup to run if I do it manually, but I would like a nightly auto backup to be in place. Neither program seems to want to run on a scedule. I am asking for advice from anyone who may know of a pretty reliable (I know nothing is totally reliable) method of doing a nightly backup that requires fairly little monitoring. I searched through these boards a bit, but decided to post my own thread after not finding what I was after.
I've been looking for a way to ensure that a specific task runs after my desktop resumes from hibernation. Initially, I'd hoped for something akin to the "Run at user logon" or "Run at startup" optionsavailable in the schedule tab of a scheduled task, but there is no setting for "Run at resume from standby/hibernation"
Restore a VPN connection after the computer's network capabilities are restored on resuming from hibernation. This is important because I have to occasionally wake thesystem from offsite using its Wake-On-LAN NIC. I've tried setting up a scheduled task to run at start-up and user logon which uses RASDIAL to dial the appropriate VPN connection, but this connection depends on the logged-in user's credentials, so it won't work at start-up. When set to have it run at user logon, it doesn't run when the computer comes out of hibernation.
Running a VB program from Sheduled Tasks, the VB program is supposed to bring up a form with information. The program works fine when started the "normal" way but when i start it from Sheduled Tasks it does start but it does not bring up the form. You can see the program running among the processes but thats all.
New to XP this week. When I first started I had something called file and folder tasks under My Computer. It still is under My Documents. I think I pushed the wrong button somewhere. How to put file and folder tasks back under My Computer?I was trying to copy data to a CD. In a section named:: To copy a file or folder" it tell you to go to My Computer.Under File and Folder Tasks you are to click on Copy this file or Copy this folder. When I still had File and Folder Tasks under My Computer it did not have anything about doing Copy. How do you add that to File and Folder Tasks if I get it back under My Computer.
I've tried in different accounts and even in the addmin account in safe mode and I always get the same error.I also get this error at home (this is my girlfriends computer) the error reads:New Task has been created, but may not run because the account info could not be sent. The specific is: 0x80041315 The task scheduler service is not running. What am I doing wrong? I've never had this problem before, is there some sort of option I need to select to get it to work?
Goto[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced]create a dword value named "TaskbarGroupSize"double click the new value and enter the number of open windows before XP groups them together.I prefer 2, but you can go higher.Log off and log back in. You should be good to go. Happy tweaking. (The latter was added after first submission)
When scheduling a backup using the Windows Backup Wizard, I put in all the scheduling info, but Windows backup never launches. When I look at a scheduled event and click "properties" I get an error message that says "General page initialization failed, etc, etc. (error# 0X80090016)
I use "C:WINDOWSsystem32cleanmgr.exe sagerun: 1" in Windows Task Scheduler to run Disk Clean at 12.01 am every night. What syntax should I use to clean the other disks sequentially?
Could someone please help look to see what is making this computer so slow to respond to commands. I added RAM and it still seems busy doing something most of the time.It is my Mom's computer and I'm trying to help her with it. Just got it on high speed hoping that would help by letting the programs update in the background.
This little tweak allows you to customize the grouping action on your taskbar. According to the default, if you have more than (ex.) 3 internet explorer windows open, XP will group them into a single button with a menu that lifts off the taskbar. You can change the number of windows that are open before XP groups them.goto[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced]look for the dword "TaskbarGroupSize"If it isn't already there, right click on the right pain, and create a new dword value. Double click the value, and enter the number of windows you want xp to allow open before it groups them. I personally like 2, because I like any related window to be grouped automatically, but, you can set this high if you wish.
how to delete items in the Explorer Bar/Picture Tasks
I would like to delete the two items:
Get picture from camera or scanner
Order prints online
tell me the location of the key in the registry, I don't want to install any soft that, will solve this problem and create a new one.
Problem 2: The view preference "thumbnails" in my picture folder is never saved! Each time I open the folder I have to set it on again! The problem is that my pict folder is not in the System disk.
Is there NO ONE who knows how to fix this: I'd like to be able to just click on a scheduled task and have it run. However the default is set to show the properties of the task. (If I just click on the task in Control Panel, the Properties of the task show) How can I change the default from Properties to Run?
Well just recently my computer has been slowing to a crawl when I do (normally) simple tasks. Usually I can run a spyware scan on top of playing iTunes, working on a Word document and much more with no problems, but today I noticed that suddenly a scan by AVG alone is using nearly 70-80 percent of my processing power . Also Windows has been taking darn near forever to load. More than 2 minutes. I know this can't be normal. I've had this problem before but received almost no replies so please someone help. This is really ruining my computing experience. By the way I have an AMD Athlon X2 4200+. Any guesses as to what the problem might be?
I try andf keep up with some of the stuff that goes across, here. Its hard, but I always know if I got a computer problem, this is the place for help. I was looking at a computer and it always lagging. I couldn't find any bad tasks running.
When I click on My Documents and it opens, there is a bar titled "Music Tasks" - with a music note on the left of it that appears in My Documents folder above the "File and Folder Tasks" Bar (all in the upper left corner of My Documents Folder. This Music Tasks bar has a drop-down menu of "Play All" and "Shop for music online". I don't know how I managed to get it there, but I would like to remove it. Can anyone give me a clue
The root folders of my external drives and My Documents are showing Picture Tasks instead of the Common Files and Folders Tasks. They also show the watermark for images for the background image (when I have this feature on). How can I fix this? There is no Customize tab under Properties for these folders. The root folder for the system drive is fine. I have Windows XP Home SP2.
Tweak Description: Just like the title says this registry hack will add printers and folders, scheduled tasks, network connections, fonts, and administrative tools to my computer which makes it very easy to navigate through the system settings. Note: it is recommended to back up the registry before any registry hacks.
On yahoo home page was holding mouse over an ad. The computer suddenly crashed and restarted. My husband then got a sudden error message on his computer.
"One of the files containing the System's registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful" You could not get it to go away if you clicked ok. We restarted in manually because you were not able to get into start or any programs at all. I did get it to go away at one point but still could not get into any programs or start menu. I was trying to run an anti virus and also a clean up and fix of registry, but could not.
I am planning to reformat my desktop this weekend. I currently have Windows ME,upgraded to Windows XP Home. I would like to buy the complete Windows XP Home (with SP2) so I can have a nice clean (and hopefully easy!) reformatting experience. Am I allowed to sell my old Windows XP Home "Upgrade" software to else on Ebay I have all the cumentation and serial numbers. Is there anything else I need to provide to a potential buyer It would be nice to recoup some of the cost of my new Window
I cannot seem to install SP2. Every time I try, it freezes up somewhere in the middle. I just tried last night, and it never made it past the first message. Something like "Initializing installation". It doesn't sound like the hard drive is doing anything. When I try to cancel the install, it will then freeze on the "Cancelling Installation" message. The only way out is to "End Task". The furthest I got was one time when it seemed to finish installing, but when it rebooted, my system was at 640 x 480 resolution, and still at SP1! I then ran a System Restore and got back to where I originally was, minus a bunch of security patches, even though the point I restored should have already had those patches
Notes:
-When trying to install, I let it run OVERNIGHT, so it has plenty of time to work.)
-System is clean of Spyware, Viruses, etc.
-System performance is pretty good, although I do get an occasional blue screen, hence the reason I'm finally trying to update.
Does anyone have any idea how to troubleshoot this?
My laptop (Presario 2700) froze last night. I tried to restart it several times and it completely stops at the Windows XP screen. Running the Home edition. Even in safe mode, it stops at the XP screen.
I installed SP3 onto my computer a couple days ago. As soon as I rebooted I encountered a reboot loop that reboots before windows starts. I do not even get to a blue screen. I have no access to safe mode, VGA mode, etc. For the sake of excluding it as an issue, I do not have a AMD.
Once I've downloaded the updates windows fails to install them. I've even tried one at a time and still nothing. I'm logged in as a domain admin figuring it was permissions related however it still fails to apply the updates.
I had to reformat my computer due to the fact that It wasn't booting anymore for some reason..well I tried setting it up and when it comes to the OS setup screen it told me it was going to install XP Pro. I was actually using my friends CD so I didn't know what OS was gonna install...so I didn't have the right key because my key is for MCE 2005, so I get my CD to install MCE 2005. I guess my computer still thinks it's about to install XP Pro and i get this fatal error that says, "An error has been encountered that prevents Setup from continuing. Setup failed to install the product catalogs. This is a fatal error."
I have reinstalled Windows XP on my Dell Dimension 8000. I got XP installed ok but then need to connect to the internet to update/download all the software I need. Network Setup Wizard cannot find any network hardware. All I need to do is connect the PC to my home network (wired). This all worked before, I just can't figure out how to get the computer to recognise the modem? In Device Manager there is no modem listed. Shouldn't there be one? Is it drivers? I put the Dell drivers disk in which didn't seem to do anything.
I have windows xp 2002 and Check / Scan Disk freezes at 49% after showing a bunch of unreadable sectors / files. How can I "force" scan disk to fix errors? I don't have the ability to reinstall windows as a fix.
I use V-Com Fix It as my suite to handle system maintenance including antivirus protection. When I try to run a scan, it goes through memory scan fine and starts working on the actual files. At some point it chokes on a file and the system starts acting strangely. The icons in the taskbar either disappear or duplicate, but when I run the cursor over them they usually disappear. If I try to launch a program I'm given various error messages like it's a bad image or not a valid system 32 file. The only solution is to reboot and that can usually only be accomplished by hitting the reset button on the case. (After posting this message, I'm going to do it again and post more of the messages I get) My CounterSpy programs scans fine, with no suspicious problems. I got Karsperky's online virus scanner to run and it didn't find anything suspicious either.
I think the problem surfaced shortly after installing .NET Framework, but I'm not sure that's the problem. I've tried uninstalling .NET Framework, re-installing version 2.0, but the same problem occurs. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Fix It. I've tried using MSCONFIG to do a diagnostic boot with no mandatory service running, but still had the problem. The problem has also happened on its own without the virus scanner running. The autofile scan was probably running in the background though. The PC had been sitting for a few hours.I REALLY don't want to do a complete reinstall of XP if I don't have to. So, I'm hoping somebody here can come up with some other stuff to try.I'm running XP SP2, Fix It 7, CounterSpy 2, Kerio Personal Firewall.
