i have a dell vostro 1510 with xp sp2 installed.when i start it only the wallpaper comes and nothing else.but mouse is still controllable.when i start it in safe mode the user icons are displayed and when i click it,it again returns to the username display page.

Safe Mode is the only thing that works. Also System Restore would not work Also System Recovery from Sony Vaio Recovery Wizard would not work

I tried using the recovery disk, running chkdsk /r and fixboot but nothing happened, it's still the same thing
So my sister gets hold of a computer in the house and ruins it, and here is the dilemma I am facing: I turn on the computer and right away i come to this message....

So I enter the cd rom and press 'r' for repair, I choose C:windows, however before it can begin to repair it asks me for an 'Administration Password' which I have no idea of after many attempts.
I do not want to have to format the pc since I have some very important files on it. Any help is appreciated.
I was unable to start Windows XP and was in a sort of start-up loop. I reinstalled Windows and I have had to start again from scratch. Everything seems to be working OK but when I start up each day I get messages to say that certain files have been lost due to a hardware or network failure and to save these files elsewhere.

Windows Update got downloaded automatically yesterday.I tried to do system restore to an earlier date but it was unsuccessful. all were successful apart from helpctr -regserver, which generated nothing.
I recently purchased a new Hard Drive from Western Digital. It's an Internal 500Gb, and its been running so-so. It's sort of loud, mainly as it sort of vibrates the case of the computer (I have one panel off as the cord im using wont fit). View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter loading an updated version of QuickBooks today, I attempted to restart my computer and received this error message: Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEMS32CONFIGSYSTEM. Attempted "typical recovery methods", then inserted Reinstallation CD for Windows XP Professional (SP2) that came with DELL computer (pre-installed). Followed steps to "Welcome to Setup" blue screen. Pressed r to repair. Followed steps to chkdsk /r command. Process began. After process reached 38%, there was no more activity---for almost 1.5 hours. Seemed frozen. Turned off computer. Tried, unsucessfully, to follow Microsoft instructions found online. At the Recovery Console command prompt, created 'md tmp', then attempted to "copy c:", etc. Each time I entered a "copy c:" line, I was given the message: "Cannot copy...". Not sure if this is happening because I have a DELL disk, rather than original Windows XP disk?If so, any way around this?

He had been asking me for a while to reinstall the operating system to get his sister's stuff off of it since she now has a laptop. The computer came with its own recovery system built in, so I did that first. The computer would run the recovery, and then would go to the black background "Welcome to Microsoft Windows" screen with a little 'please wait' under the windows logo flag, and when it would go to the next screen (which would presumably be the beginnings of the start-up area) it would get a black screen with a cursor in the upper left side. (You can't type anything with the cursor, however). So I got in an online chat with HP who said that it sounded like the recover partition had been corrupted and that if I had not made a set of recovery CDs then I needed to order them and run the recovery from the Cds. So I did just that yesterday. The same thing happens. I get to the first start-up screen (black background with Microsoft 'flag' and a 'please wait') and when it goes to the next screen it's a black background with a cursor in the upper left. What is wrong with this computer.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a problem I have a new system installed Windows XP professional. Everything was ok till yesterday. I just have a few more things to install and I have the computer plugged into the 4 plug UPS so if the power goes down the computer has 5 minutes to shut down. Well the hydro went off yesterday for a few seconds and all of the other computers came back up but the new one. It was booting into Windows got to the Windows logo and the bar going across loading then after 10 minutes still sat there. I decided to re-boot to see what was wrong as I am a computer tech. Nothing so I went into safe mode that was fine got out of there same thing logo looks like it was starting nothing. I did put in the Windows XP disk thinking to just do a repair still the same thing. I get the Windows screen like it is loading nothing. Go back to safe mode and here is what it says and there is no disk at all in the drive. Can not run setup from Safe Mode rebooting computer.

I can still reach the advanced setup sceme for safe modes etc, by pressing F2 or F8. Also unable to startup the system in safemodes nor all other possible ways through the F8 menu. System gives an possible unexpected power failure, when I startup the system apears the traditional windows XP screen but before the welcome screen appears, appears a blue screen saying something about virtual memory dump. This screen disapears so quickly that I'm unable to read the complete message. I have no XP software or what so ever, notebook was in my possesion never connected to the net.

So I just turned it off by pressing the power button (wrong I know). (All normal). Right after that, it goes to an error page with the text, "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware of software change might have caused this" and so on and so forth. To my knowledge, there have been no recent hardware or software changes. My options from there are as follows:
- Safe Mode
- Safe Mode with Networking
- Safe Mode with Command Prompt

- Start Windows Normalliy
I am unable to start in any of the modes offered to me. When I boot into windows XP, I login correctly but then nothing shows up. No start menu or any desktop icons. When I go to task manager, I don't see explorer .exe as a process running I know this has something to do with desktop
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to help a friend who has a computer that is horribly infested with virus and malware. My friend had no recovery partition or any type of Windows CD. After downloading and running Spybot and Avira Antivirus the computer began to run much better. Everytime the computer would startup, Avira found a virus called "Winlogin.exe". I tried the "Quarantine" option but it kept popping up. Eventually I just clicked "Rename". Now when starting the computer it loads the Bios and goes to the XP boot screen - and then restarts - over and over and over. I've tried booting in safe mode - same thing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedTask scheduler does not appear in the services list. I am logged in under the administrator account and am using Windows XP Professional. Every time I try to start the task scheduler in control panel -> scheduled tasks it says 'Unable to start'. When I try to view the properties of a scheduled task I get error: 0x80041315 (This is a picture of the error. I reinstalled Windows Internet Explorer 7 but it still does not appear in the services list. I also used System file checker but it didn't fix it either. I do not have Task Scheduler listed in the services list. I really don't want to reinstall windows xp...is there some way I can get the Task Scheduler working again? (Also I've selected the Notify of missed tasks option but that doesn't seem to work either)

Then a couple of hours later it started behaving normally even though I did nothing.Now each time I turn it on, it starts normally except that I get the following message: "CC App.exe -- Unable to locate component This application has failed to start because MAPI32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." What or where is this component and how do I re-install it?
View 13 Replies View RelatedI can't access the "Run" command from the start menu. When I click on it windows bring up a message box saying "Windows can not create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?" Even if I click yes, the shortcut doesn't do anything. I can still access the run command by hitting the windows button + r. But it is annoying not having that function when needed... No virii or spyware involved. I believe it's a registry issue, but I've no idea were to correct the issue and I can't find any info on the net[which is a first].

I understand that there is a way to eliminate items in the start-up file but having been to the site, I cannot determine which items to delete without messing up my system.
