View 11 Replies View RelatedMy friend gave me a Dell Latitude Laptop, Windows XP O/S to look at. It is a couple years old and was given to him by his old company which went out of business. He has not used it until recently and was unable to get into it due to a network password screen. I accessed it with ''admin'' as a username and no password. I cannot change the "users" information or disable the password because I have no "administrator" rights and don't kow the password for the administrator. I tried the default blank password trick. Once in, I noticed network software installed and I cannot access the internet with my ethernet cable. Basically, I am just trying to get it where he can use it around the house. Is there a way to disable the company installed networks, or make them go away completely? I have no XP O/S on disk, so I am trying to avoid a complete format. If I can just get the machine back to the basic XP O/S it would be good to go.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy son has a 3 year old Compaq computer which is running Windows XP home. He had been asking me for a while to reinstall the operating system to get his sister's stuff off of it since she now has a laptop. The computer came with its own recovery system built in, so I did that first. The computer would run the recovery, and then would go to the black background "Welcome to Microsoft Windows" screen with a little 'please wait' under the windows logo flag, and when it would go to the next screen (which would presumably be the beginnings of the start-up area) it would get a black screen with a cursor in the upper left side. (You can't type anything with the cursor, however). So I got in an online chat with HP who said that it sounded like the recover partition had been corrupted and that if I had not made a set of recovery CDs then I needed to order them and run the recovery from the Cds. So I did just that yesterday. The same thing happens. I get to the first start-up screen (black background with Microsoft 'flag' and a 'please wait') and when it goes to the next screen it's a black background with a cursor in the upper left. What is wrong with this computer.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just got an old laptop from a friend of mine running XP Professional. There are currently two passwords required to be able to use the computer: one is right after starting up the computer, before anything's really booted up yet. The other appears after the system screen -- I have to press ctrl+alt+delete, then put in a user name and password. Is there any way to get rid of the first (admin? Is that the term?) password without getting rid of the second one?

When windows is loading, you have to select which of the two windows that you want to loading.

I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.
The computer I'm writing about is my sister's home-built PC, running XP Home Edition on an Nforce4-A939 motherboard. *May not be verbatim as Windows is installed in Swedish. She tells me that shortly prior to this happening, the computer was transported by car for about 20 minutes, after which she set it up, played Sims for about an hour, downloaded a couple of patches and switched it off (normally). She then restarted it a day later, left it on without using it for about an hour, then switched it off again (normally). When she booted it up again, the above error appeared. She only uses the computer for playing Sims.

It launches everytime I start the computer and several times throughout the day. At startup the computer will not get to the home screen without making a selection of whether to correct now or later. It offers me the opportunity to "purchase validation." Everything on my computer is legitemate. I've looked in the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) startup and services and don't recognize it. I have a HP Pavilion a647c, w/Windows XP. This is the site that it directs me too:If you scroll to the 3rd section of the webpage you will see the "star" that I refrenced earlier. Bottom line is I don't know if this is for real.
