i am finding a missing file named ks.sys.i have been trying to install audio devices for my computer and it will not allow me to install them because i'm missing files. at first i was missing ksuser.dll file but i was able to download that and install it, and now its asking for the ky.sys file.

It is from a few years back, but I figured I'd do a clean install of Windows XP on it and run it in an extra room.I copied the drivers over using a program called DriverMax, and it seemed to work successfully. I had the internet right away and everything else I tried worked. The only problem I am having is that there is no sound. It also says there is no audio device found. Device Manager says I have the most up to date Legacy Audio Drivers, but I am still having this problem.Is there another driver that I might need in order for my computer to recognize an audio device.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a volume control icon at my system tray...then, all of the sudden, the icon shows a "mute" status...i tried to unmute it by double-clicking the icon to access the volume control...nothing happened...i went to Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices...also, nothing happened...i thought that this applet (mmsys.cpl) in C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32 was corrupted, so i tried to run it from other folder containing that file but still, nothing happened...at this point, i don't think that all 3 files were corrupted...the only way to control the volume , and to mute/unmute is by using the Creative Surround Mixer (i have an Audigy sound card),which work flawlessly...The wierd part is, even i unmute from here, the volume icon at the system tray still shown as 'mute'..but i can still hear all the sounds and songs...Then, I've discovered that in AudioHQ (also from Creative software), under the View>Multimedia Propertis, I CAN actually access the 'Sound and Audio Devices' applet...this will open the 'Audio' tab...other tabs like 'Sound', 'Voice' and 'Hardware' is also accessible from here, BUT, when opening the 'Volume' tab, it hangs...i could't access this applet any longer...the only way to close it is to end the process (rundll32.exe) in the task manager.That's why i conclude that the volume tab in the applet is problematic.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had some trouble last night and today with getting rid of a virus. Now that it is gone, I am having sound problems (maybe related, maybe not). This morning, when I opened iTunes I got a message that there was no audio device detected. After trying several things, I rebooted. Magically, I could play music again. However, a short while later, I again got an error message telling me that there is no audio device found, even though it shows up in Device Manager as working properly. The problem goes away for a short time after I reboot, but returns. It is Realtek AC 97. Why won't my computer keep recognizing it? (It tried going to Realtek's site to download an update. It has updates for Windows 98, 95, etc., but not for XP. Or at least I couldn't find it.)

So I enter the cd rom and press 'r' for repair, I choose C:windows, however before it can begin to repair it asks me for an 'Administration Password' which I have no idea of after many attempts.
I do not want to have to format the pc since I have some very important files on it. Any help is appreciated.
I have recently tried to reinstall some oldish games (rainbow 6, Total Annhilation) and when you select install, an error pops up:

I have run Belarc Advisor and it doesn't even list a network adapter. Now when this had Windows Server 2002 it could hook up to the internet and browse it just fine. Attempted "typical recovery methods", then inserted Reinstallation CD for Windows XP Professional (SP2) that came with DELL computer (pre-installed). Followed steps to "Welcome to Setup" blue screen. Pressed r to repair. Followed steps to chkdsk /r command. Process began. After process reached 38%, there was no more activity---for almost 1.5 hours. Seemed frozen. Turned off computer. Tried, unsucessfully, to follow Microsoft instructions found online. At the Recovery Console command prompt, created 'md tmp', then attempted to "copy c:", etc. Each time I entered a "copy c:" line, I was given the message: "Cannot copy...". Not sure if this is happening because I have a DELL disk, rather than original Windows XP disk?If so, any way around this?

In control panel under sounds and audio devices, it says I have no audio device, and that there are no playback devices. When I try to play a song in RealPlayer, it says "cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it." Could an overheated chipset cause only the sound to malfunction? My chipset fan recently failed and I was running without it for a little while.
I am using a Sony Vaio Model PCG- 7X2L and it won't play any sounds. There is no volume control on the task bar, so I went to Sounds and Audio Devices and it says there is no audio device. When lookng at the Device Manager, this is what is listed under Sound, video, and game controllers:
