I have a Sony Vaio and I have way too much on my C drive - I can't even defrag my computer due to usage. I was curious if someone could walk me through the steps to move some of it to the D drive to make some space. I am afraid to delete anything that came w/ the computer - in case there are shared files or something. Also I can't find the disks/paperwork that came with it.

A friend of mine has an old computer with Windows XP home on it. It's basically a piece of junk, out dated and has things wrong with it. Basically the capacitors on the board are popping and leaking. It won't run anymore. So a new computer will be bought. New motherboard and case.
However it has no windows. The windows on the old system is pre-loaded on that computer. Is it possible to somehow install XP on the new computer using the old key and without buying a whole new copy of Windows XP? I figure xp won't allow this right off the bat, but does Microsoft offer any way to do this? I think it should be possible since XP is only being used on one system. Paying for windows twice doesn't seem just right in this case.
I also know some keys are defined for certain types of hardware configurations (oems etc). But I still wonder if there is a way.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThis is the problem in which I'm currently in. I saved roughly about 15Gs worth of music and numerous pictures in my documents. Well since then I've changed the h.d, motherboard, and a few other things and installed a fresh copy of windows on the alternate h.d. well with the first h.d set as a slave and no means of going back to my original setup because i deleted most of everything on the h.d except a few folders it won't give me access to those folders. I'm wondering is there anyway of gaining access to those folder?

I don't know how it happened, but it's wreaking havoc with Adobe Premiere because on all old projects I have to relocate all files on what were F that are now on G. It's also messing up my shortcuts.
I recently helped someone save the documents off of their computer after it crashed (it was missing a Windows file. I tried the repair command and it wouldn't work, so I decided to save the files and reformat the hard drive).I plugged the hard drive into a working computer and pulled all the documents off of it (VERY slowly) onto an external hard drive.
Every once in awhile I wouldn't be able to pull a picture or document off because of a cyclic redundancy check error. I just moved on and saved what I could. I assumed it was because the hard drive was already bad so I just moved what I could.
Now however, my hard drive seems to contain approx 13GB of data which I am unable to locate, even when viewing the "hidden files" option. I first noticed this increased used space when I wanted to defragment the hard drive and noticed that there was only 45% free space available (there is usually 75%).I have viewed the properties of all the folders on the C: drive and they do not add up to the 20GB shown on the C: drive properties...The defragment report states that "some files in the volume could not be defragmented"

Being a curious type I pulled the power and ribbon leads from the DVD and plugged them into the 4G HD, after setting the jumper to slave.Then switched on. A dos line appeared saying 'automatically configuring an F: drive' After which Windows appeared to boot up normally. Except that 'My Computer' showed no (D The 4G (F drive showed as not formated. Not only that but my D drive is missing lots of files and folders wont open. It seems that the partitioning has been forgotten! I have checked what bios settings there are (not many on Compaq 5000) And the bios sees my main Crive and only one 20G disk I have a bad feeling about this Is there any way to get things back to normal?
This is really a question more than a problem. I'm running a PC with 2 HDs. I am changing the boot drive C: for a larger disk. Now ordinarily I would use a backup program like Ghost or whatever. Now my situation is slightly different in that most of my startup programs are installed on my second HD E:, the C: drive being the boot drive with XP installed.
What my intention is. Is to take out drive E: Then replace that with my new drive. Then I was going to boot in Safe Mode and use the Windows Files & Transfer wizard to copy the C: drive to The new drive. The last thing to do then is swap the C: with the newly installed drive and replace the original E: drive. I hope that all makes sense.
computer's running a lil bit slow and wont allow me to install my new mobile phone software as c drive memory is full, i've tried my best to move things to the d drive hard disk but its still really full.is there any safe way of transferring most of the programs and files over to the second hard drive?

I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.

Just got a new machine and the primary drive is an SATA drive... but I still want to get old files of my old hard drives by hooking them up the the ide connections. Unfortunately, for one drive when I put it in the machine it gives me a missing hal.dll error and when I put the other drive in it gives me a ntrdl missing error. is there any way I can force the machine to boot to my SATA drive when the IDE drive is in there? I suspect it is trying to boot to the old drives when I install them.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI cannot access files on the CD-ROM drive of my laptop. it's a combined cd/dvd, and it reads dvd's fine, runs programs from cd's, but when i go to windows explorer and try to open individual files, like word documents, powerpoint presentations, etc, it does not work. if i double click on the drive, nothing happens. if i right click on it and click open, nothing happens. i know it's not an issue with the CD, because I put the same CD into my other computer, and it reads it fine. And get this, the icing on the cake: I have a network set up, and when i make my cd rom drive sharable, my other computer can access the files on it. So my desktop can read the files fine from the shared cd rom drive in my laptop. but my laptop can't read it's own cd rom drive.HP support are dumbfounded, they say they have never heard of such a thing, and recommend that i reinstall windows xp.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI needed to reformat my Hard Drive from NTFS to Fat32. But in doing so, I managed to forget to back up my files. By reformatting, I erased everything on my C: drive. Now, since I'm not in Windows and cannot access it, I have no way of doing a System Restore. I don't own any XP Install discs, so that eliminates that option. The only solution I can think of would be to download the necessary files, but I don't know if there is such availability.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI restarted Windows XP one day, thinking nothing of it, however, at the boot up screen, it gave me the message that one of my files was corrupt and couldn't start. No biggie, this has happened to me before, I know how to fix it. However, when I popped in the XP Pro boot disk, it gave me the option to do a system restore (I accessed this by going to install Windows XP, and then selecting the operating system I had currently installed to recover). I chose to do this, thinking it would save me time. It did in one respect, in that I can now start Windows XP, the only problem is that it's now as if I completely reinstalled Windows i.e. all my files and programs are gone. However, when I open my C: drive, all my files are there, I can see them and access some of them, however, others, such as My Documents, I can't access, although they have to be somewhere on my computer, because my C drive is still filled to capacity. I tried searching for files and folders to find some of my documents to no avail. I tried doing a system restore, however, all the restore points I created are no longer there.

I cant delete them, they say they are locked. I have also downloaded unlocker 1.8.7 and it wasn't able to delete the files either. I have run system mechanics, prevx malware, kaspersky nitvirus program and didn't find anything wrong. The haven't caused any problems that I know of except I wasn't able to format my d: drive.
