Transfering From One Desktop Computer To Another
Feb 20, 2007
How would I go about connecting two separate desktop PC and then transferring the data from one to the other. Both have windows XP on them. If someone can tell me where to find the info, it would be deeply appreciated. Can they be connected with a serial cable, CAT5, USB or other cable without setting up a whole network?

I've never done this before and I need some help.
1.I want to transfer data from my old Compaq to my new HP, is this called mitigation? O/S's - Windows XP Home Edition - Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
2. The connection will be by USB 2.0, cable.
3. Is there a way to select some programs and not others or is everything transferred?
4. I know certain information has to be written to the registry, like when a new program is installed, how do I transfer those settings from the old to the new?

A friend of mine has an old computer with Windows XP home on it. It's basically a piece of junk, out dated and has things wrong with it. Basically the capacitors on the board are popping and leaking. It won't run anymore. So a new computer will be bought. New motherboard and case.
However it has no windows. The windows on the old system is pre-loaded on that computer. Is it possible to somehow install XP on the new computer using the old key and without buying a whole new copy of Windows XP? I figure xp won't allow this right off the bat, but does Microsoft offer any way to do this? I think it should be possible since XP is only being used on one system. Paying for windows twice doesn't seem just right in this case.
I also know some keys are defined for certain types of hardware configurations (oems etc). But I still wonder if there is a way.

I just bought an HP mini notebook and want to transfer my "Favorites" and 'Address book' to the new computer using a USB memory stick. Both machines are having Win XP Home Edition. I tried to use Windows Easy Transfer and even there I don't know where to look for my address book and can't get the screen resolution on the mini to remain as required by Win Easy Transfer before it will work on the computer.

I have a Sony Vaio and I have way too much on my C drive - I can't even defrag my computer due to usage. I was curious if someone could walk me through the steps to move some of it to the D drive to make some space. I am afraid to delete anything that came w/ the computer - in case there are shared files or something. Also I can't find the disks/paperwork that came with it.

This is the problem in which I'm currently in. I saved roughly about 15Gs worth of music and numerous pictures in my documents. Well since then I've changed the h.d, motherboard, and a few other things and installed a fresh copy of windows on the alternate h.d. well with the first h.d set as a slave and no means of going back to my original setup because i deleted most of everything on the h.d except a few folders it won't give me access to those folders. I'm wondering is there anyway of gaining access to those folder?

I currently mainly use a Vista PC but I think you guys know that there are the games that just won't work with Vista for some reason or another, so that's why I dug up my old XP system. Now, note that I have not used or turned on the old computer for almost a year.
The PC starts normally, until it gets to the Windows XP loading screen. After a whole on that screen, the screen goes blank, shows the 'Not getting any Signals' screen and goes back to the previous blank screen. I first tought that the Computer turned off but actually the hardware is already running!

I have a desktop PC running Window XP Home Edition and my laptop has XP Pro Edition. I want to use my desktop as the host computer and would like to run "Remote Desktop" so I can access the desktop via my laptop. I've been told both that it is possible and that it is not. The reason given for not being able to do so was that the "host" computer has to be running the Pro Edition.

I have been having a problem with my Windows XP (HP Pavilion A735W) where once I shut it off, and go to turn it on again later it asks for the system recovery disk, which I insert, and once it detects and loads it it says something that it didnt go through, and to use extreme caution when using the fdisk, however I do not have a floppy drive, or a floppy recovery disk. So basically to get it on I would turn it off (the 'illegal shut down') and on until it came to the desktop, which took forever. Last night my friend went on Internet Explorer, and went on neopets.com, and a whole nunch of pop ups came up (This did happen to me once, but I didnt freeze up) and the computer froze up, except for the mouse, like if I double clicked an icon nothing would load. I left it for about 40 mins and nothing happened so I did the illegal shut down, now I keep trying to put it on, and it asks for the system recovery disk which I have tried doing a few times, but I cant get it back to the desktop.

This is new and just started a few weeks ago. Once in a while I'll doubleclick the "My Computer" icon and all 5 of my desktop icons will open their windows. I also noticed my type-ahead launcher won't respond to its hotkey when this happens. It doesn't feel like that's the problem though. The bad behavior won't stop until I reboot. The first time this happened I tried a logoff to see if that would be enough to fix it but, my machine wouldn't recognize my password. The password is recognized on restart.Restart has been my only fix so far. Does this sound like anything to anyone?

My sister's laptop, (Windows XP) is freezing up and having a lot of trouble accessing the internet. She thinks it's from an e-mail that she downloaded a screen saver from. It has to do with a web page called freeze.com, 3D Dolphins screen saver, desktop weather and a couple of other things that all downloaded at the same time. She has to go to Control, Alt, Delete to try to get the laptop to shut down and then has to click on "End Now" several times. I will attach a picture of the list. Also, when she goes to "Add & Remove", it won't let her uninstall the desktop weather and another one called When U Save.

On my computer suddenly & without pro vacation or malice Windows XP Pro just arbitrarily decided to remove the My Computer icon from the desktop.I can restore it by going to the start menu, right clicking and then going properties, selecting start menu and add it from there, but when I go back to the classic start menu it takes it away again. It seems it will only let me have it if I added it using the Start Menu and I can't stand the size of it and all the crap that comes with it.I prefer the Classic start Menu as used in earlier versions of windows.

In addition to the slow boot, it also hangs at a black screen, I get around it by pressing F1, then it loads ok. Safe mode loads normally about 2 min.
