A Dell Dimension 2400 PC with XP-Home on it. I just notice the My Computer icon is missing from my desktop. How do I restore this icon? Also, how do I eliminate all those pesky little "balloons' that pop up along my taskbar. I am the only 1 using this PC and this little balloon notification are annoying.

View 9 Replies View RelatedUnil this morning i could click on a little "up" arrow on the right side (not extreme right) of my taskbar to display a pop up list of my desktop icons. I could then click on the 1 i wanted. it was very convenient because i didn't have to close all my windows to see the icons. The arrow suddenly disappeared & everything became different & i don't know why.

I copied and placed another one on the Desktop and it shows as a copy and when I go to rearrange my Desktop to (type)and My Computer does not go where it orignaly suppose to be.

View 15 Replies View RelatedOn my computer suddenly & without pro vacation or malice Windows XP Pro just arbitrarily decided to remove the My Computer icon from the desktop.I can restore it by going to the start menu, right clicking and then going properties,selecting start menu and add it from there, but when I go back to the classic start menu it takes it away again.It seems it will only let me have it if I added it using the Start Menu and I can't stand the size of it and all the crap that comes with it.I prefer the Classic start Menu as used in earlier versions of windows.

and I can create a shortcut to the desktop and run the program.But, I'd like my icon back.I believe the problem was created by having all my icons underlined so I only have to do a single Left click to bring up the program.
I've winxp Home with SP2 system, yesterday my daughter had installed the program 'MS Plus' from the XP Installation CD which was not installed earlier in the machine. My OS is original, but to-day on opening the system I'm seeing that the icon of Hard Drive(E : Drive)to which the program was installed went missing and in its place another icon (which generally represents for any unidentified file) has taken its place.

A few of my desktop icons got deleted and sometimes I wouldnt c the start button or the computer wouldnt detect the main harddrive and various other errors. It also gave me fake anti virus ads I installed many different programs to remove it but none were successful, except Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.Now, my computer has been so unstable that I dont even feel like it's a new computer.

I have had them even come and go after different sessions. I went to the notification area where you can choose to place the icon on the taskbar, but it's greyed out and I can't change the gray so that I can highlight. The compaq people have me uninstall a driver and that didn't help. We selected default setting s and that didn't help. I found instructions on Microsoft.help but they work only if you've got the cd. My Windows XPHome ed. was preinstalled.

I have tried run>RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll> and sometime this will allow me to safely unplug a device, but not always. HP suggest reformatting the hd, but I prefer not to do this. Any suggestions?

I lost the Safely Remove Hardware icon and also the Volume Control icon from the Notification area of the System Tray. I do not recollect why or how this came about.
I realized that the SRH icon can be made to show up in the System Tray by:
Click on Start/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices and placing a check mark in the
'Place volume icon on the task bar' check box.
This immeditely places the two icons referred to above in the System Tray.....
Sometimes the icon is missing in the system tray.
I can get it back but next boot it's missing again.
On occasion it does show but not often.
Any ideas on why this happens and how to get it to shoe all the time?
I don't know what I did I think it was yesterday and I was rearranging the start menu.but now a whole bunch of icon images are missing and even if I right click into properties the box to change the icon is greyed out. I don't know what to do.now 3/4 of all my shortcut icon images are gone, and all my office documents, etc. are just the standard window icon. What do I do?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a windowsxp operating system.Last week I noticed the volume icon missing in the system Tray as well as all other icons.The only one left is Norton icon.When I open the task bar and go into customize notifications all the icons are either folders or icons.Example volume has the picture of a folder.Norton has a lexmark icon.Lexmark has a folder icon.Real message center has a volume icon.I have been trying all week to remedy this problem.Ran Norton and Adware.Nothing.Has anyone in the forum run into this problem before and if so how did you fix it.
