I don't know what I did I think it was yesterday and I was rearranging the start menu.but now a whole bunch of icon images are missing and even if I right click into properties the box to change the icon is greyed out. I don't know what to do.now 3/4 of all my shortcut icon images are gone, and all my office documents, etc. are just the standard window icon. What do I do?
View 7 RepliesI have been using Add/Remove icon in Control Panel to remove programs. Although the Win2k Pro is running fine ,the icon of Add/Remove Program is not opening the next window to remove the programs.
After looking at the display settings and closing them, my icon disappeared. A file search on all *.cpl files show that the display.cpl file still exists
and I can create a shortcut to the desktop and run the program.But, I'd like my icon back.I believe the problem was created by having all my icons underlined so I only have to do a single Left click to bring up the program.
I've winxp Home with SP2 system, yesterday my daughter had installed the program 'MS Plus' from the XP Installation CD which was not installed earlier in the machine. My OS is original, but to-day on opening the system I'm seeing that the icon of Hard Drive(E : Drive)to which the program was installed went missing and in its place another icon (which generally represents for any unidentified file) has taken its place.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed a Windows update Upon reboot, system went into Check Disk and reported multiple errors. Once Windows loaded, a bunch of DOS shell windows began opening.Then every program he clicked gave an error message that the DLL file was missing. He has IE running and MSN Messenger; no sound.error message and then had him try to open Add/Remove Programs at the cmd prompt. It wouldn't, and the error message given was: Error in shell32.dll Missing entry: control_run.dll NOD32 system scan hung up at 20% so he gave up on that. He says his computer occasionally runs Check Disk on reboot.

I want to totally remove the tray icon from near the volume one in the taskbar, so that it would not appear while the program is running. Ive tried deleting in safe mode, ive removed the program and the whole program file that it was related to, and im basically out of ideas says sumthing like "in use by another person or program" etc.havnt had this problem before so dno how to fix it.

I went to the notification area where you can choose to place the icon on the taskbar, but it's greyed out and I can't change the gray so that I can highlight. The compaq people have me uninstall a driver and that didn't help. We selected default setting s and that didn't help. I found instructions on Microsoft.help but they work only if you've got the cd. My Windows XPHome ed. was preinstalled.

I have tried run>RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll> and sometime this will allow me to safely unplug a device, but not always. HP suggest reformatting the hd, but I prefer not to do this. Any suggestions?

I lost the Safely Remove Hardware icon and also the Volume Control icon from the Notification area of the System Tray. I do not recollect why or how this came about.
I realized that the SRH icon can be made to show up in the System Tray by:
Click on Start/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices and placing a check mark in the
'Place volume icon on the task bar' check box.
This immeditely places the two icons referred to above in the System Tray.....
Sometimes the icon is missing in the system tray.
I can get it back but next boot it's missing again.
On occasion it does show but not often.
Any ideas on why this happens and how to get it to shoe all the time?
I have a DELL 8100 with WIN XP Pro installed.Recently the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the sys-tray has disappeared. How can I retrieve it and, in the meantime, can I safely disconnect USB equipt. without first shutting down?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a windowsxp operating system.Last week I noticed the volume icon missing in the system Tray as well as all other icons.The only one left is Norton icon.When I open the task bar and go into customize notifications all the icons are either folders or icons.Example volume has the picture of a folder.Norton has a lexmark icon.Lexmark has a folder icon.Real message center has a volume icon.I have been trying all week to remedy this problem.Ran Norton and Adware.Nothing.Has anyone in the forum run into this problem before and if so how did you fix it.

I could then click on the 1 i wanted. it was very convenient because i didn't have to close all my windows to see the icons. The arrow suddenly disappeared & everything became different & i don't know why.
