Can I remove a program's tray icon ( the one that appears near the volume icon in the taskbar ) without removing the program nor closing it? I want to totally remove the tray icon from near the volume one in the taskbar, so that it would not appear while the program is running. I don't want to hide it, but to totally REMOVE it from the system tray, Can I? Can I edit the registry for doing that or something else?

I'd seen some discussions in this group about removing icons from the systray but that requires stopping the program from being executed by Startup using the 'msconfig' command.Is there a method/program of removing the icon from systray but leave the associated program running? Unfortunately, the program I'm running doesn't have an option to remove it from systray.

I searched and found an answer to someone else's problem which was to exit the "normal" one and both would disappear. They did but the AVG icon is completely gone from the tray. I thought it would re-appear on its own.I can run it from the desktop icon but I'd like it back in the tray.

Since the last two or three monthly Window updates, that yellow shield icon - the Windows Update icon - no longer shows up in the system tray. I tried to locate it under "previous elements" (I'm translating from German since my computer language is in German), but it's not there. I only know when Window updates have been downloaded when I want to shut down the computer and I have the option to either first install the updates, after which the computer will shut down automatically, or shut down the computer without installing the updates.

For the life of me I can't figure out how to get this icon back. I have to bring up the Master Volume Panel to change volume settings. You can see which previous items that have been run or are currently running on your system tray by clicking on Start >> Settings >> Taskbar and Start Menu, tick the box that says "Hide inactive icons" then click "customize". There you will see a list of Current and Past items. If you would like to remove the past items then follow these steps: 1. Start Regedit. If you are unfamiliar with regedit please refer to the FAQ on how to get started. 2.Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerTrayNotify 3. Delete the keys Past Icons Stream and Icon Streams 4. Exit regedit and restart Explorer. 5. To end explorer right clicking anywhere on the system tray and choosing "Task Manager". Click on the "Processes" tab and find Explorer.exe. Click the End Process button. Your whole systemtray should disappear. 6. To restart Explorer, while still in Task Manager, go to the "applications" tab and choose the New Task.. button. Simply type Explorer.exe and click OK.
