View 6 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine has an old computer with Windows XP home on it. It's basically a piece of junk, out dated and has things wrong with it. Basically the capacitors on the board are popping and leaking. It won't run anymore. So a new computer will be bought. New motherboard and case.
However it has no windows. The windows on the old system is pre-loaded on that computer. Is it possible to somehow install XP on the new computer using the old key and without buying a whole new copy of Windows XP? I figure xp won't allow this right off the bat, but does Microsoft offer any way to do this? I think it should be possible since XP is only being used on one system. Paying for windows twice doesn't seem just right in this case.
I also know some keys are defined for certain types of hardware configurations (oems etc). But I still wonder if there is a way.
I bought a new pc with xp already installed. It's telling me to make a recovery cd and also to copy the recovery tools to cd. How do I get a recovery tools cd or if it's already installed, where is it?

Both machines are having Win XP Home Edition. I tried to use Windows Easy Transfer and even there I don't know where to look for my address book and can't get the screen resolution on the mini to remain as required by Win Easy Transfer before it will work on the computer.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm saving picture and video files on separate DVD-RWs. I have Easy CD Creator 5x basic that came w/ the computer and updated it with the patch 5.3.5.10_basic. I pulled my first DVD from a year ago out and added pictures onto it from this year's trip. Original files were there as expected and additions were no problem. Secondly, I started a 2nd disc of all video wmv files. I filled that one to the hilt and do not wish to add to what little room is left.My settings are set thusly: "The selected Record Method finalizes the session. The CD itself is not finalized so additional sessions can be added later. To change this setting click options."Actually, this is the setting I prefer, but in the case of the second disc, it's full for me now and if I wish to possibly play it on my DVD player it needs to be finalized.Problem is, this option isn't available (appears all faded-out) when I click on file, and appears the same to the lower right when I'm looking at disc properties. Only real option in bold black at these times is ERASE, and I don't want to do that! The discs play great on my computer, all material is recognized, etc., but this inability to finalize has me confused. Certainly in theory, a RW disc by its nature will never be truly finalized. I have updated to win xp from win me. The Adaptec Easy CD Creator will not work as a message comes up saying "Drivers are not compatible and could cause problems" so they don't load when I have reinstalled the program.This came with my computer when I bought it with win ME. I have the original disk. I have looked at the web site which now is Roxio, but cannot get a straight answer as to what and where the drivers are to download. Then I installed iTunes to connect to my iPod. I then tried to use Roxio and it could not find my DVD RW drive!! I then uninstalled Roxio and then installed it again. I was told by HP to perform a couple of tasks to try to bring it back and the end result was the file is now gone. HP sent me a series of discs to do a complete system recovery. I endanger losing all my installed programs. I have an external 80gb drive. Can I put all the programs on that drive and then have a quick reinstallaion of all the programs? Is there another way in which to access the program other that a complete recovery?

Well since then I've changed the h.d, motherboard, and a few other things and installed a fresh copy of windows on the alternate h.d. well with the first h.d set as a slave and no means of going back to my original setup because i deleted most of everything on the h.d except a few folders it won't give me access to those folders. (i am at win xp sp2) I did thisds before and it reinstalled nicely a copla years ago Microsft recognizes it they had a page on it in Help and Support (i put in Roxio Creator 5.1 Basic. it told me to try a couple things but to no avail and the workaround says ignore it..IGNORE? HOW?It can't be ignored cause it won't let me install. this is the disc that came with the puter (Dell Dimension 8100) a few years ago. would anybody have any ideas of how to install Roxio (i cannot afford to buy any new software right now and using WMP 10 is just not as comfortable Roxio is easy and it also writes text so the name of each tune that have bought and burned to a CD-R that I play shows up on my car CD player.

I then shut my computer down to restart it, used it a few times (in 4-bit safe mode), then after I shutdown again, I cant log back in... it just freezes and the screen flashes, I cannot boot into my computer setup (default f2) or into safe mode (default f8), however I can run the XP cd and get into the recovery console, is there any way that I can change the boot sequence from the recovery console? The screen is dotted with a bunch of dots up and down the screen in columns, and is in 4-bit video mode.

I have managed to put video footage onto my PC from a video cassette (by plugging my VCR into the TV aerial socket). The video footage is saved on my PC as .mpg files & when I open them, they play fine on Windows Media Player.When I import them on to Windows Movie Maker, they are recognised as video footage and I am able to put them into the collections as video. However, for some reason, when I drag them onto the timeline, they go onto the audio line & I can't get them to go on the video line, so when I play it, the sound plays but there is no picture. I have tried saving them as .AVI files but that makes no difference
I have window XP SP2 installed on my laptop. I also use InterVideo WinDVD Creator for video editing. Recently when I try to import video file into my application, my laptop, processing percentage goes up to 98%, and the application just freezes up. I also tried the Microsoft movie maker software and I get the same result. I was wondering if I need to reinstall the application or there is something that my laptop is missing. The application was functioning fine until 2 days ago, and since then I haven't installed any other application.

Use fine, then after its been on for awhile it goes black again. Weird. I have the newest drivers and all the windows updates loaded. It just keeps going out.
