Computer Starting Slow Down - Freeze Up
Jun 18, 2008My computer is starting to act funny. It is beginning to slow down. It freezes up often. The computer is 3-4 years old and is a Dell 4700. I had to replace the hard drive about a year after I bought it. I have deleted the cookies and also I have deleted the temp. internet files. Also I have defraged and ran disc cleanup. I blow the dust out of the inside about every 6 months. I ran the Dell diagnostics and the computer froze up when it got to the "optimize start up " section. I have the Hijack Log available if needed.

Apr 30, 2009Every 3-4days my computer would freeze up while booting up at windows XP screen and scroll bars would freeze.What bohers me about this is i am sure what could be causing this. I use avg as my antivirus,and run A2, spybot,regcleaner, tweaknow on a weekly basis. I keep my system really clean, so now i am wondering is it my HD. PC: Win XP-PRO, 800MHZ AMD Athlon, 1024mb,80gHD. I did what cleaning i could in safemode, it still freeze on scroll bars. I tried last good config, result is the same. The last time i got pass the freezing was by doing a restore.

Sep 23, 2007This computer stopped booting. It would freeze in the process. Since there was nothing on the hard drive worth saving, I used the recovery boot cd. It went though the process, rebooted, and returned to the setup process. In the middle of the setup, while installing devices, the computer froze again. I have tried repeating the process to no avail. I have tried turning off some of the not so necessary things in the BIOS and trying it.

Oct 28, 2009I have a gateway laptop. about 6 months ago i was listening to music through my itunes and the songs starting skipping and the comp froze. I tried to do ctrl alt delte and couldnt so i had to shutdown by just holding the power button. The computer was also really hot when this happened. Since then I have not been able to get the computer to work. It will start about and give me the option of how i would like to start (in safe mode or regular) and no matter which option i pick it will go to the loading screen for windows xp and just sit there with the progress bar going for hours or until the comptuer dies. It never gets past this point or gives me any kind of errors.

Aug 20, 2008I currently mainly use a Vista PC but I think you guys know that there are the games that just won't work with Vista for some reason or another, so that's why I dug up my old XP system. Now, note that I have not used or turned on the old computer for almost a year.
The PC starts normally, until it gets to the Windows XP loading screen. After a whole on that screen, the screen goes blank, shows the 'Not getting any Signals' screen and goes back to the previous blank screen. I first tought that the Computer turned off but actually the hardware is already running!
Cant Get To Desktop When Starting Computer
Nov 29, 2006I have been having a problem with my Windows XP (HP Pavilion A735W) where once I shut it off, and go to turn it on again later it asks for the system recovery disk, which I insert, and once it detects and loads it it says something that it didnt go through, and to use extreme caution when using the fdisk, however I do not have a floppy drive, or a floppy recovery disk. So basically to get it on I would turn it off (the 'illegal shut down') and on until it came to the desktop, which took forever. Last night my friend went on Internet Explorer, and went on neopets.com, and a whole nunch of pop ups came up (This did happen to me once, but I didnt freeze up) and the computer froze up, except for the mouse, like if I double clicked an icon nothing would load. I left it for about 40 mins and nothing happened so I did the illegal shut down, now I keep trying to put it on, and it asks for the system recovery disk which I have tried doing a few times, but I cant get it back to the desktop.

Jan 1, 2005I've had my computer for a while and have upgraded it many times. One such time was a few years ago when I went from Win98SE to WinME. Things were good for a while until I needed to reformat my harddrive, couldn't find my WinME CD and had to go back to Win98SE. Problem was, I have another harddrive, that I didn't include in the "downgrade" so it was unavailable after I loaded win98. I formatted that disk and things have been fine since.
I got an Ipod for Christmas and didn't notice when I bought it that it required 2000 or XP. I thought, not a problem, I'll just upgrade to XP. So last night, I upgraded and immediately noticed some problems. First of all, when I right click on the desktop, the computer freezes and you have to restart. Same thing happens if you're in a folder and try to create a new folder. My Sims2 game won't run (I've uninstalled and reinstalled wtih no luck)....

Jan 12, 2007I was working on the computer yesterday when it froze up on me. I didn't think much of it, so I rebooted and continued what I was doing. Later that same day, the computer locked up about 2-3 more times. Then I started hearing ticking noises coming from inside. I shut it off after it froze again. When I powered it back on, the screen during bootup that displays my Hard drive's status (I have four HDs, paired up with one another), says that the first set of hard drives (which is where the OS is on) is healthy, and on the other set, it gets an error with red text. I rebooted, and sure enough, they were both healthy again.
This is where it messes up. It starting loading the Windows logo, with the progress bar. The next thing it does is go black. It doesn't boot at all after that. I have to reboot everytime. I then tried to boot in safe mode. Black screen again. I tried all the possible options in the boot menu, none of them worked. That's where my first problem takes off. So I now have a non-booting OS. The next thing I do is insert the Windows boot disk, and installed Windows XP on the same HD the original OS was on (Don't ask why, I don't know either). After the installation, Windows booted up fine, except I was running on a fresh install. Which how I'm on this site...........

Whenever I boot up the PC, 3 sessions of MS Word open - 2 sessions have a new (blank) document open, and the 3rd session just shows Word as being open (no new document).I went to Documents and Settings | Application Data | Microsoft | Word | Startup to see if there was anything in the folder prompting Word to open the 3 sessions. The folder was empty. I then clicked Start | Run | msconfig | Enter to see if Winword.exe is in the Startup folder. I thought I might see it in there 3 times – one for each of the Word sessions that are opening whenever I boot up the PC. Strangely enough, Winword.exe wasn’t in the Startup folder at all – not even once.

This is a duplicate setup - i have two systems very nearly identical, both HP DC7600's, full-up 4GB RAM, 160GB HD, fairly fresh Windows XP Professional SP3, typical applications: MS Office, Picasa, iTunes, Realplayer, Google Chrome browser, blah blah. Nothing exotic.One of them, after being left with a half dozen tabs open in Chrome, and not much else going on other than AVAST Antivirus running in background, upon checking back in with the Screen Saver "On" [starfield], no password needed, the screen/display freezes on the background image, and nothing else pops up on screen except the mouse cursor.

Sep 10, 2005I run Windows XP Home SP2 and enjoy listening to internet radio for hours at a time while doing non-computer activities. On several random occasions lately, the audio stream has stopped and I discover my desktop has locked up...with no response from keyboard or mouse. After a reset, I've checked the event log and Dr. Watson (drwtsn32.log) but can find no entry, including date/time, related to the freeze. My system runs cool, regularly showing 34C and 35C for board and CPU temps, with all fans at appropriate speeds. My firewall, antivirus and antispyware apps are regularly updated. I haven't installed new hardware or apps in weeks. What other tools are available to troubleshoot this kind of freeze?

Aug 18, 2010Windows XP desktop freezes when exiting programs. Also some of windows applications load very slowly. The windows search icon is displayed for 10 seconds or more while loading the control panel, search or help utilities. I am using Mcafee security suite and fixcleaner for security virus and malware protection. These programs show a clean system. Also desktop icons are blanked out for at least a minute when leaving programs. When the icons fill in the system operates fine.

After I click and drag a few programs from a folder onto the background of the desktop, some programs still remain in the folder and they also are coppyed to the desktop, and some other programs are earased from the folder and are placed on the desktop. (So in other words, some of the files are "dulplicated". Some program icons still remain in the folder and on the desktop, and some are only on the desktop and not in the folder.)

After one of his uses we started to get this message when we would try to switch users MediaAcck.exe and the computer freezes. It asked you to click cancel or OK and doing either does nothing you also cannot close out by hitting the x in the upper right hand side. The computer does not respond to control alt delete and the only way you can get out of this is to manually shut the computer down. Again the only time it happens is if you are switching log on users. I have run the latest McAfee virus scan it picks up nothing - I also ran spybot and it also comes up with nothing. I ran a search for this file on my c drive and it does not show it exist at all. I am unsure as what to do next

Jun 10, 2010My problem started when my computer froze up. I was unable to move my mouse or do anything else. I turned my computer off and back on, and when it came back on, the first thing I noticed was that the visual theme had changed to one resembling an earlier version of Windows. I eventually found a solution to that. Now the remaining problem is that I can't connect to the internet. I am "connected" to my wireless network, but it says "limited or no connectivity." My IP address is listed as 0.0.0.0. When I use the "repair" option for my wireless network, it says it can't renew my IP address. It says the problem is probably with the network. Internet Explorer also says that. However, I know the problem is strictly with the computer itself.
When I renew the IP address myself, it just stays the same--0.0.0.0. I can't connect to the internet this way. I use a Toshiba Portege M400-S5032 with Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005. I have a Netgear 54 Mbps Wireless Router WGR614 v7. Please be patient with me, as I don't know anything about how wireless networking works, or very many technical terms assosciated with it.
Avi Files Freeze My Computer
Dec 6, 2009Anytime I try to open up a .avi file my computers CPU boosts up to 100%. I have tried Neros showtime and windows media player and both do the same. I have the latest directx and have installed the Klite codec pack. I originally did not have the codec pack installed and it was causing the problem. Any ideas?
