Jun 21, 2005After install of XP SP2, desktop icons freeze and pc requires log off and log on to unfreeze. Anyone any ideas on this.

Desktop Freeze - Icons Blank - Malware Protection
Aug 18, 2010Windows XP desktop freezes when exiting programs. Also some of windows applications load very slowly. The windows search icon is displayed for 10 seconds or more while loading the control panel, search or help utilities. I am using Mcafee security suite and fixcleaner for security virus and malware protection. These programs show a clean system. Also desktop icons are blanked out for at least a minute when leaving programs. When the icons fill in the system operates fine.

Jul 6, 2005I just have a quick question to ask about moveing a program icon from a folder to the desktop. After I click and drag a few programs from a folder onto the background of the desktop, some programs still remain in the folder and they also are coppyed to the desktop, and some other programs are earased from the folder and are placed on the desktop. (So in other words, some of the files are "dulplicated". Some program icons still remain in the folder and on the desktop, and some are only on the desktop and not in the folder.)

This is a duplicate setup - i have two systems very nearly identical, both HP DC7600's, full-up 4GB RAM, 160GB HD, fairly fresh Windows XP Professional SP3, typical applications: MS Office, Picasa, iTunes, Realplayer, Google Chrome browser, blah blah. Nothing exotic.One of them, after being left with a half dozen tabs open in Chrome, and not much else going on other than AVAST Antivirus running in background, upon checking back in with the Screen Saver "On" [starfield], no password needed, the screen/display freezes on the background image, and nothing else pops up on screen except the mouse cursor.

Desktop Freeze - Hardware In Safe Mode
Oct 29, 2007when i boot up, i can sometimes get to the desktop, then i hear a click from my tower and everything is frozen. all fans are still running. and power is still on.i've tried a clean install of windows to no avail. this happens everytime , but the freeze can happen before i get to the desktop and also in safe mode.
seems to be a hardware issue. i may be able to get a friends graphics card to see if that is the problem

Sep 10, 2005I run Windows XP Home SP2 and enjoy listening to internet radio for hours at a time while doing non-computer activities. On several random occasions lately, the audio stream has stopped and I discover my desktop has locked up...with no response from keyboard or mouse. After a reset, I've checked the event log and Dr. Watson (drwtsn32.log) but can find no entry, including date/time, related to the freeze. My system runs cool, regularly showing 34C and 35C for board and CPU temps, with all fans at appropriate speeds. My firewall, antivirus and antispyware apps are regularly updated. I haven't installed new hardware or apps in weeks. What other tools are available to troubleshoot this kind of freeze?

Jul 6, 2008I remember few days ago.. my kaspersky identified some system file as a trojan.. so it probably a misunderstanding when i was installing system mechanic. it got deleted.. and i have this automatic option to delete them after they are put in backup in kaspersky.

Things were good for a while until I needed to reformat my harddrive, couldn't find my WinME CD and had to go back to Win98SE. Problem was, I have another harddrive, that I didn't include in the "downgrade" so it was unavailable after I loaded win98. I formatted that disk and things have been fine since.
I got an Ipod for Christmas and didn't notice when I bought it that it required 2000 or XP. I thought, not a problem, I'll just upgrade to XP. So last night, I upgraded and immediately noticed some problems. First of all, when I right click on the desktop, the computer freezes and you have to restart. Same thing happens if you're in a folder and try to create a new folder. My Sims2 game won't run (I've uninstalled and reinstalled wtih no luck)....

Jul 22, 2005I took it home and attempted to install windows xp on it and in the process things got messed up. I started up the computer and logged in. Once in, I inserted the Windows XP install so as to upgrade it and the process started out fine. Well it got to the point where it said it needed to restart in order to contiinue with the process, which it did. It restarted and began copying files, and it tossed out a few error messages. They were: could not copy file: spra0410.dll & spra0411.dll I tried to write them all down but I couldn't catch the all. I do know however there were about six files, all similar to the ones above, that didn't copy. I'm not too sure what to do at this point because now the computer won't go to windows at all. It goes through the start up screen all the way to the point where it says "press any key to continue", but then just kind of freezes and won't go any further. I've tried pressing a button to go forward, also tried to boot in safe mode whic none of the F Keys or Del will take me to. I tried changing the Bios to Boot from CD first using the same XP CD. I'm not sure what else I can do to get this thing to open windows, even in safe mode, or system restore. Sorry for the novel, just trying to explain in depth.

SITUATION:
Last Night I noticed when I was editing that some of my avi exports were all distorted and fragmented... So i figured "I havent EVER ran defrag (stupid me) on this hard drive maybe I should defrag it" So I looked into a defrag program called "diskeeper" I defragged C: (windows drive) and attempted to defrag D:.... I came to my comp and discovered an error that just said failure with the drive or something... After that I could not access (D I restarted, diskcheck did not work, and I dont want to do system restore... I posted on another websites forum and someone said I probably went over the 137GB limit... I think when I went over the 137GB limit, it possibly overflowed over some kind of boot files or something that lets windows read the disk i dont know (not that techincal with computers)So i looked into that, and I have an ATA card... and Windows NO service pack XP pro... Ive heard things about having a 48 bit bios or something... And after installing WINDOWS XP SP1... I try to get on my computer and i load windows
