stop device will not run in this operating system.... I get this message at the start up of my computer and will not continue to boot up until I clear it.

It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.
PC is left on pretty much all the time. Whenever I have to restart it for whatever reason it restarts normally, loading XP relatively quickly. However, if I have to shut it down for even a few minutes, Windows will typically fail to load most of the time. Usually it will hang on the black screen with the white progress bar, or sometimes on the loading xp screen. At this point it will sometimes start up when I reset it, or it will show the "Windows failed to load normally" screen. If I then start in safemode then restart it usually works, or even if I choose "start windows normally". I'm not sure if this is a driver or hardware/bios issue, I have reformatted once, and restored the OS using my XP disk a couple of times but the problem persists. I keep most of my drivers up to date. Tools like Sandra don't report any major errors (from what I understand anyway). I have just ordered new RAM, as I thought this would sort the issue, but it hasnt. I have to run my memory at 100hz so it will boot without any problems . If I run my processor at 200fsb then the computer doesn't boot and it doesn't start.

When I started the pc it would try to start windows and go into the options screen of starting in safemode, safe mode w/command prompt and so forth. I would choose safe mode and the system files would start to load and stop and hang on "amdapg.sys" file. I have read that it could have something to do with my AMD chipset. Which I do have. I can enter, and did, f2 startup. I read where I needed to delete an old partition, did, now nt4 startup disk with not load, as i am prompted that the drive is too big (3.99). I cant seem to partition the drive? I would like to just start from scratch, wipe drive, start over..I just want to get this going so I could update nt4 (currently has sp1). I think I have my work cutout for me.

(I have my reasons for doing that) i hooked up the hard drive and when i turned on my computer, it loads the screen(the screen where it shows the master, slave, etc.). My SIL has messed this up badly. I am very good at following directions and usually figuring out computer problems, but now I can't do anything. The computer boots, shows windows XP loading and then stop. No error message. No blue screen. NOTHING. Just empty dark blackness. And I am at a loss what to do. View 9 Replies View RelatedOn my desktop I had partitioned the main Hard Disk into 2 and had XP Pro on one half and Windows 7 on the other.When I used to boot up the PC the windows boot menu came up asking if I wanted to boot to XP or 7.Soon afetr this XP started crashing a lot. So I decided to scrap 7 and I've re-partitioned the Hard Disk into one big lump with only XP remaining.The partition that had 7 on it no longer exists.Why does my PC still start with the windows boot menu when I start it up?It still asks me if I want to boot to windows 7 or an earlier version of windows?Is there a way of stopping this?

This is a six year old Sony, XP, AMD 1.0Ghz. Everything was working at the time I tried the System Recovery EXCEPT I was constantly getting low space messages for drive C. I have no files on this drive and very little software. It is a 20G hard drive partioned into two 10G partitions.

I was having problems with it constantly rebooting it self. finally got it to boot in safe mode, couldn't really find or fix anything. tried to restart in normal mode, and did the restarting as soon as windows started to load.
Thought I would try system revovery at the boot menu. It started up and started to run and kept giving error msgs about not being able to read or open files. (all files are on recovery partition). Well it frooze up about half way. Tried to run it again, and it starts to load and then BSOD.

I want to know if this is something I maybe able to repair, or if i should send it back to gateway?

Received this message, Error Loading Operating System, when installing Windows xp pro? After loading the installation files from the CD, windows xp shuts down and reboots to continue loading a fresh install of Windows from the installation files onto the HD.Instead of loading the installation files an error message hangs the installation and reads Error Loading Operating System.The installation files are loaded, but Windows xp won't load up? The message is quite ominous: Stop error c0000218 and the hive affected is system root/system32/config/default It's impossible to recover the last working config or start in safe mode or do anything. It keeps looping back to the blue screen with the stop error. The pc does not recognize the hard drive, it does not have a recovery cd.
