View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter installing Norton AntiVirus 2007 I received the following message when I opened the security center in the control panel; The Security Center is currently unavailable because the "Security Center" service has not started or was stopped. Please close this window, restart the computer (or start the "Security Center" service), and then open the Security Center again. I have naturally restarted the computer but that didn't fix the problem. I don't know that the problem is connected to the installation of Norton 2007, (upgraded from 2005), but the Security Center was available before the installation.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have run into a snag. After installing Trendmicro I started having problems. After the install it took forever to load, and when it did I get a warning that I have no virus protection. I removed Trend with it's own removal tool and installed AVG Free, I get the same thing, The resident shield and email won't start. I install Vipre and the same thing protection is turned off and won't turn on. I have cleaned the registry of all norton traces, avg and others. I have did a scan with viper while it was installed and found a few items that I cleaned. I'm at my wits end and have never seen this happen before.
View 5 Replies View Relatedmy sister is going to college with one of our old laptops. It has a 1.6 GHz Celeron and about 180 MB of RAM. I need security (firewall, antivirus), but I don't want it to slow down the system a lot. All she needs to do is use the web and Microsoft Office. Do you have recommendations on what free software to use?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running a 3 year old version of XP pro and it has gotten progressively slower booting up. Seems like about two to three minutes or so ( I should time it). I've run msconfig and there doesn't seem to be anything too obvious and I don't want to screw with things I'm not sure of as well. Also, when launching Outlook Express ,any browser and Word are really slow also. Excel is fine. Seems really odd. I've run antivirus, antispyware, defrag all to no avail

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy sister's computer is running very slowly, particularly at startup (which seems to take forever). I've got Panda antivirus software running and do reasonably regular spyware scans with AdAware, but am not sure if the problem is just that the computer is old with too little memory / overheating because it's on almost all the time / something else I haven't thought of. To help me determine what's going on, could someone much smarter than myself take a look at this HJT log and see if you see anything of concern?
View 14 Replies View Relatedthink it all started 2 days ago. i had installed a game, but it would not start cause i needed some missing dll files. which i inserted. one of the things i did wrong however was that i tried to replace a faultrep.dll file. this was not the file i wanted to change. i read wrong on the error dll messege, but whenever i tried to replace it the old file would swap in, so no harm should have come from that. i also installed a missing direct x file: D3DX929.dll ..... thats the dll changes i have done. anyway the next day startup was weeery slow. i uslay can boot up my pc in 2 minutes, now it takes 5++ minutes, the destop appears in normal time. but the welcome tune is a good 2 minutes late, then programs that now are slow to start up are live messenger and zone alarm pro. also i have other problems. like i cant accses "my computer" by icon or other ways

In 4 of them Windows was reinstalled 2 and 3 times; and the remaining 2 became ultra-slow.Software and use is the same on all of them.(office work) No additional software downloaded or installed in any.Should I forget about the "risks" of not updating and reinstall and use the no update option???

View 10 Replies View RelatedI've gone to msconfig and deleted some start up files, deleted some programs from add/remove, made folders for favorites. Everything I could think of to decrease startup time. Nothing seems to help. I still have to wait around 10-15 mins before IE starts up. I even installed firefox to see if that would help with start up. Nothing. I did a Diskeeper scan and found that there were alot of low system files (pink). Could this be the reason for a slow start up. Is there anyway that I can help this poor little computer. It really drags at startup.

View 10 Replies View RelatedOne of these days I'll finally know everything about this machine....or maybe not. Right now it's taking about 3-4 minutes to be usable after the login. In an effort to alleviate the problem, I ran a search through TSG, and pulled up this thread. I followed the directions given by Phantom010 to look at: Site 1--which actually identifies several of my PROCESSES as unnecessary/bad, but I'm positive that I shouldn't mess with the processes in the task manager without knowing what I'm doing. If I need to remove some of my processes, I'd be happy to do so.

I've cleared a lot of the startup programs from the list (there was over 30!!) but it doesn't seem to be loading a whole lot faster, or even noticeably faster. I've downloaded HJT, in case you think I'll need it, but I don't know that I have a virus, since only the startup seems to be affected (and SAS & Avira don't pull anything up besides the occasional tracking cookie)............
One of our XP computers runs automated updates for Windows. However the last few days, there have been 10 updates installing, and the 3rd update is taking hours upon hours to install. I have never seen anything like that before. Is this normal? How would I go about approaching this? It will more than likely update itself later today
