ScanDisk Hangs My Bootup: Screen Just Goes Blank?
Jan 23, 2006
I run ScanDisk on a locked drive eg the drive with my op system and it suggests I run it at bootup, the bootup fails (and there is no Scan)- after the initial beep and basic b&w info, the screen just goes blank (no mouse pointer etc) - the red light flashes away on my PC box indicating a lot of hard drive activity though, but I've left it half an hour and it's got nowhere. Exactly the same happens if I instruct my anti-virus program to do a boot-time scan (Avast). My only recourse is to press F8 at bootup and select Start with Last Good Configuration and I can get back into Windows.

1. Limited users cannot log in. Windows gives an error message:
Quote: Windows cannot log you in because your profile cannot be loaded. Check that you are connected to the network or that your network if functioning correctly. If this problem persists, see your network administrator. 2. When logging in on an administrator account, it takes about 3 minutes to open explorer, and when it does, the taskbar is hidden, is acting like it is locked (even after I unlocked it) and the Start Menu won't come up.
3. User Accounts (in Control Panel), when opened, simply hangs on a blank screen

I have upgraded all of our pcs to SP2 (WinXP). Since then only some of the pc's exhibit issue. SVCHOST maxes at 100% for 5-10 minutes on bootup then resumes normalcy. I've narrowed it down to the Internet Connection Firewall causing the issue (if I kill it the prob. goes away). I need to have this enabled. (Besides, why is it only happening on some machines and not others?)

When I boot up into xp, the background screen and a (working) cursor are the only things to be seen; I hibernate, unhibernate, and all then normal things show: icons, start bar, etc. What's up?

all clients woke up and turned on their cpu only to have it hang on the 'black screen' just after the windows splash screen but just before the logon window. None of the <f8> options work. I booted with a genuine xp disk to drop to recovery console and performed various chkdsk /r commands as well as fixboot and fixmbr - no change. There are no errors, no blue screens, nothing to followup on. I even loaded the laptops hard drive into a tower as a secondary primary and scanned for pests viruses and the ilk - for the most part -clean

I've only had this problem for the last month or so... during my bootup in winXP, after the blue welcome screen and its little jingle, the computer sits on by desktop background for over a minute before explorer.exe loads.

I am running Windows XP, and a number of system upgrades were downloaded and being installed during shutdown. Unfortunately, the power got turned off partway through this, and now the computer won't boot up. I tried putting the Windows CD in to run a repair installation, but it still gets stuck.I get the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, but when I press a key there are two lines of text that appear and disappear too quickly for me to read them, and then it goes to a blank screen with flashing cursor, and doesn't do anything else.

I have reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2 on my a computer that I built and started to install other programs as usual so that I could use this computer. The Windows Update balloon saying there are updates for your computer(it also claimed that I could work on other things while the updates occurred. So I installed other programs--Photoshop CS2, Quicktime Pro 7, Wacom Pen Tablet software drivers. The Windows Update happened three times. 1st had about 20 different updates, I rebooted with no problems. 2ns had 35 updates including IE 7, rebooted with no problems, 3rd time had 47 updates, rebooted and now my desktop is blank. My Pen Tablet (mouse) works but I don't see any icons or the START bar. My programs still work because when I open the Windows Task Manager and choose New task, I can browse for programs. Surfing thru other threads in this forum, I thought maybe I had a virus or malware.Just have never had any error messages. so I downloaded and ran these program scans: WPFind3u, VundoFix, AntiSuperspyware. Scans came up with no find of malicious stuff, but my desktop was visible afterwards. I've even tried starting up in safe mode. I get a black screen there--no icons on desktop.

My windowsXPpro has hung and given me a blue screen and it says smth like: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent any damage to your computer. "If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart i'm not too sure what the message is as my laptop will have restarted before i even get to read finish the screen.i knw this isn't helping much but until it happens again, i can't provide more information.
After restarting, it'll go into scandisk as normal after a crash. however, it will then scan VERY slowly until about 56% where it will hang. i think there is a last message but as it took me many MANY tries restarting and skipping scandisk

Hi, I have been avoiding shuting down my computer because when I reboot I can't always get back to my Desktop. All I get is a black screen asking me if I want to try some differnet ways to boot up, After trying all the different choices the only way that works is "Last Known Good Configuration ( your most recent settings that worked)" Then finally after that I get the desktop with this error saying RUNDLL error loading C:PROGRA~1MYWEBS~1ar1binF3SCRCTR.DLL. What ever that means? Then it says The specified module could not be found ok.

All of a sudden the other day my OS (Win XP Pro, SP II) froze shortly after bootup. I was able get on Firefox but the mouse froze on the XP screen when running any HD application. Ctrl-Alt-Delete didn't free up the mouse, and doing it twice got no response.Earlier, I couldn't find any conflicts on the Device Manager.I changed my mouse connection from USB to Serial, but that made no difference...This AM, Windows booted up OK, but the screen froze right after a few tray & desktop icons had loaded. Ctrl-Alt-Delete still didn't function for a shutdown...Strangely, the Num-Lock light and the mouse underside red beam stayed on after shutdown.

Hey, basicly my old Hard drive for some reason or another died. I got a second hand one off a friend which I beleive and he beleives to be allright. = Baracuda 7200 .6 160gb HDD IDE... Obviously when starting it gets stuck on Error loading OS.. So I restarted went into boot menu and placed CDDrive as no1 boot. Placed my XP disk in... it went through the stages: Press any key to boot.Setup is inspecting your computers hardware configuration now on the blue screen of "Press f6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver that passes by what should appear next is sposed to be a screen saying "press enter to install windows xp or R to repair," but that doesn't load up instead I am stuck with.

I was recently issued a new laptop at work and after a few pushed updates from our IT department, I discovered that everytime I boot I now get a strange screen just after the Windows logo but before the login prompt. The OS continues loading about 5 seconds after this message is displayed. I've contacted our IT department but they don't seem to know either.I have a strange feeling it was caused by a failed update. Judging by the spelling mistake in the message and the timing of the error, my guess is that it originates from a 3rd party driver/software. It is interesting to note that when booting up in safe-mode the error screen does not present itself. This further makes me suspect a driver of some sort. There are also no related errors in the Application or System Event Logs.

Tonight, when I just open IE and Outlook Express, all of a sudden, the screen turned black with a message, 'Time is running out', in the middle of the screen. Then the computer halted and I needed to reset the computer to restart the computer.
Does it mean that it is time for me to change to a new harddisk or it is of some other problem?

When I turn my computer (HP s7527c Desktop) on it only boots to the HP Administrators screen. There is no password required. If I click on the icon it only reloads the same screen. Can anyone explain what is wrong? If I click on F10 (PC Recovery) during bootup the computer works ok after the recovery process is complete.I have only had this computer less then a year and I cannot find any answer on the HP site or from their support.

Every time I boot up I get a blue screen that says I have a a disk error, but I can cancel the test. If I let this run and let it start testing, It responds with "unspecified error" after a second or two. I have manually run the disc checking on all HDs. No errors found. Is this some kind of a joke, a virus, or distraction so some malware can load?

When I upgraded my computer from 2000 to XP Home Ed., the guy at the store installed a new motherboard, and then installed the XP. He spelled my last name wrong, and now everything in the registry with my name is spelled incorrectly. I want to be able to fix that.
Also, I would like my computer to bypass the welcome screen when it boots up.I had it set up to do that, but then I did something to cause it to go back to that screen, and I can't get the bypass to happen again.

This is really starting to aggravate me. I fixed a computer for a guy by re-installing Windowx XP on it with Service Pack 2. He installed Service Pack 3 after I specifically said "DO NOT INSTALL SERVICE PACK 3!!!". Anyways, it started acting funny so I have it back. Now when it starts up I get a black screen full of zeros on it right after the Gateway screen. I am trying to put a fresh copy of Windows XP on it, but all of the writing is jumbled and the zeros remain. Anyone experience this and know how to make it display correctly again? Everything looks fine once it gets into Windows or on the Gateway bootup screen, just the "dos" screens have zeros on them and I cannot do anything with it like this.

Dell inspiron 1000 2.2 celeron 256 ram 40gig Win-xp.the machine had recovered from serious error. Upon rebooting the windows program would not load and the hard drive made a clicking sound. I went into setup and no value was set for the hard drive. then the clicking stopped for no apparent reason and i got the windows to load. i went on line for about an hour then the clicking noise started again and the unit shut itself off and tried to reboot on its own. again i went to setup and no hard drive was detected. I did nothing but look around in the setup and again the clicking stopped on its own. the windows loaded again and i am online just now creating this message. Usually the cooling fan would be running alot, however i did not hear it running at all since the blue screen.I have had numerous blue screens. the online search always points to the Sonic Record Now as the culprit but offers no solution.

Very similar to the following problem but i do not have a raid, and it seems that this PC has a raid and i don't, plus it was never really determined what the actual solution was.
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...oot-black.html
The basics: XP Professional Boot up screen, right before the windows loading screen, or direct after the F8 Menu if you hit "Start Windows Normally..." it will just lock up, no HDD activity, blank screen. now BSOD, nothing.
All 3 safe mods work fine.
Ran chkdsk /r in recovery.
Ran proper fixboot procedure.
Went into safe mode and checked the event viewer.
The only concerning message i got was: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
AmdK8
Fips
nod32drv
Formatting really isnt an issue since i can back up anything i need through safe mode. However its just the fact that the Windows gremlin has struck me again and i must defeat it once more.
I highly doubt this is a hardware issue as it is more of a driver/software issue.any help?
